The only problem with SF is that Harbaugh is in control of that team. Not sure Manning would want to go to a team with a chef already in the kitchen.

That is true to some degree. Alex Smith is being controlled to function in a very traditional offense. On the other hand, Harbaugh isn't a guy that can't adjust to personnel. We'll see how San Fran does but I don't think they're going to suddenly just boot out Alex Smith or trade him after finally getting some payoff for their investment years ago. He's only 27 years old and he's just starting to perform well. They might not want to give up on that.

I don't really see any risk behind signing Manning.

Alex Smith's progression stops? I think that's a pretty big reason. There aren't too many QBs that are 27 with 95 passer ratings available. Why stop one from continuing to improve? It's the first time in his career he's had consistent quality coaching.

Valid points on both sides. He could be a Tracy Mcgrady (never play well again) or he could be a Grant Hill (comes back and performs well though not like he used to).
I personally root for Peyton Manning and being an East Tennessee resident I don't have much choice. I do know that Peyton is the best QB I have ever watched play (tight race with Marino) and just the name alone would be nice but I dunno.

If he were healthy he'd be ideal for a two to three year run if you can protect him. He's one of the best QBs I've ever seen in terms of directing the ground attack and using the PA at opportune times. It's rare you have a QB that can direct his own offense.

there is if you don't draft his replacement right away. Manning is one hit from ending his career. And yeah, you can say that about anyone, ask Joe Theismann, but Manning is now in the same category as Chad Pennington was for us in 2010 preseason. Chad barely got touched and his career ended. The worst case scenario is we traded for Manning, he gets hurt in week 3 and we again fall back on Matt Moore for the season and end up exactly where we are now. If Manning is released and can still play (highly doubtful combination) and we draft Landry or Barkley to sit for a year or two, then I'm perfectly okay with bringing in Manning.

I don't see acquiring Manning as prohibiting us drafting a QB.

Well a lot depends where Miami finishes. I'm fine with any of the younger second round guys like Foles and Tannehill and perhaps another guy slides like Jones into the late first, but the question is what do you do elsewhere. The defense has a couple needs that can probably be fixed with lower priced free agent moves, but the offense needs at least one linemen in FA too. I think that dries up your FA cash so you need to find out what else you can do.

My preference? Trade down for Riley Reiff in the first with Foles in the second followed by a pass rush specialist in the third along with another RB. It's not glamorous but with a couple cheap signings in FA on defense you have a heck of a team.

So, we go from sucking for Luck, to playing for Peyton. OK, I can get behind that.

All kidding aside, If he was sought after and signed to a reasonable contract in FA, after presumably making a full recovery from his neck injury/surgery, then I'd be all for it. BUT...we'd still need to draft his heir apparent in the upcoming draft. That's the beauty though...think how much better prepared a young prodigy would be with Peyton as a mentor for two or three years. As has already been pointed out, you need look no further than the Aaron Rodgers/Bret Favre situation to appreciate how well that could turn out.

I wouldn't wait to select a QB in the 2nd round just because I sign Manning, 1st round for sure if the player is there.

IF he's a free agent, why the hell not? No brainer to me if he can pass a physical and is able to play. Now trading for him with that big contract and no guarantee that he will be healthy? Thats just not a smart move. Honestly, I think we could be an instant contender for the Superbowl with Manning at 85% of what he used to be so if he's healthy and a free agent I would be all for him coming here. If it doesn't work out, hey you tried to win with one of the greatest ever, you can't fault that. We still have to draft the Qb of the future in rounds 1-2 IMO though.

Would you turn down a 36 year old Dan Marino?

Wait until he hits Free Agency, dont mortgage this teams future for a QB who may or may not be recovered from a serious neck injury.

I wouldn't because his health is uncertain and it would probably cost too much. We need all the picks we can get just in case we have to move up to draft a young QB. Also, I don't know how thrilled Manning would be with the idea of grooming or mentoring a young QB, which is a reason a lot of people want him. He's a good guy, but these great players want to be on the field and being a caretaker/mentor type would probably drive him nuts. If he came cheap, than sure, but I doubt he will. It can't even be considered until we all know how bad his neck injury really is and if it will continue to be a problem.

I think the $28 million dollar option is due before the start of the trading period.

The stigma of being the team that paralysed Peyton Manning will set them back at least 5 years.

Some team's that would be more attractive than the Dolphins are the Jets (with Tom Moore), Titans, Chiefs, 49ers, and 2 sleepers... Houston Texans and Baltimore Ravens. Schaub is coming off a Lisfranc and he's signed through 2012. The Texans have everything. Imagine getting the guy that's always held them back? The Ravens haven't locked up Flacco yet, who is signed through 2012. Bring Peyton in for 2 last runs with that defense?
