Hopefully a second opinion proves otherwise; if not, thirty years from now your daughter will look back and this and say, "hey remember that time I had cancer".

As the father of two daughters, I cannot imagine this. Of course, I know it's cry, pick your jaw up off the floor, and get prepared to kick its ass. You never want a 14 year old to have to deal with something like this, but she'll do awesome and come out of it knowing she's a very strong person. Hug her extra tight.

Quick update: My daughter is weird. The doctor that the slides were sent to for a second opinion needed a second opinion and none of the doctors could come to a consensus.

It shows definite characteristics of cancer, but not enough for a definite diagnosis. The other specialists were leaning towards Hashimoto's which is an autoimmune disease affecting the thyroid, but blood tests have already ruled that out...

Appointment tomorrow morning with the doc to go over options. First is a second biopsy called a core needle biopsy which is a little deeper and takes out more tissue... The other is to call the first biopsy inconclusive and go directly to surgery...

"A man's suffering is similar to the behavior of gas. If a certain quantity of gas is pumped into an empty chamber, it will fill the chamber completely and evenly, no matter how big the chamber. Thus, suffering completely fills the human soul and conscious mind, no matter whether the suffering great or little. Therefore, the "size" of human suffering is absolutely relative." - Viktor Frankl

Kendra decided to go the route of the core needle biopsy. Don't have a date scheduled, so it's the waiting game again...

Doc doesn't think it is thyroid cancer at this point, but there is a possibility that it is something worse as "the lymph nodes are involved." Fingers crossed...

Continued thoughts and prayers are highly appreciated and thanks again for letting me get this out.

Latest biopsy results show NO CANCER!!!

Happier than anyone could imagine, but now we're not sure what we're dealing with...

Gonna take it one day at a time and keep up on it.

Really appreciate the support here!

Sorry for the lateness of this response.

We've been doing everything we could to figure out what exactly is going on with my daughter's thyroid. We eventually ended up changing doctors to get a second opinion and found out through a new ultrasound that she had another nodule on the left side of her thyroid that grew in about six months.

Our new doctor was fantastic, double checked the original nodule on the right side and felt that it had actually mostly gone away or just wasn't as much of a concern. It took a lot of time for our original doctors to finally get the original biopsy to the new doc and when he had his pathologist check it out, determined it to have a 100% chance of being cancerous. The concern, then, was the second nodule that had grown dramatically and he gave my daughter the option of continuing the wait and see option of ultrasounds, biopsies, and checkups vs a thyroidectomy.

She chose to have her thyroid removed. My wife and I feel that this is probably the best decision as well. The cancerous cells along with a new nodule with an unknown cause is just too alarming to let it keep going, despite papillary thyroid cancer being pretty easy to treat even if the cancer metastasises to other parts of her body...

We don't have an exact date as we need to speak with the surgeon(s) that will be performing the surgery, but thoughts, prayers, and well wishes are once again greatly appreciated.
