Maybe Brown looks better because of Tannehill? He has more catches/yards/TDs since Tannehill took over. Tannehill turned Hartline into a 1k receiver.

He looks better with Tannehill than Mariotta that's for sure. But he is going to be a special WR, he has all the tools.

Not for pass blocking they don't. I know you'll make up whatever you have to, to try and be right though.

Yes I do. Serious question, when you cried about trolling earlier, were you looking in a mirror or......?

Tennessee does not have an above average pass blocking line. Yes, PA helps QBs deal with pressure. We've been saying this stuff for literally years.

Not trolling at all. Just curious why you think he ran bad routes or struggled with deep balls what did you see??

I watch the games. I have my opinion on what I see, feel free to disagree with it.

I've been a bigger fan of Tannehill than even you of late....so take it or leave it.

Come on... Let's not start the great Wallace debate. Nice try trying to get us off the topic of Tannehill and his awesomeness.

Yes and this wasn't breaking news to anyone.

The pass blocking was worse earlier in the year than it has been of late. Why? Because they have to respect RT's passing ability and a great running game.

When he was on the team, I even made diagrams as to what the problems were with his route running and catch radius. You forgetting that, does not create in me a sense of obligation.

The sacks have been a combination of hanging on to the ball too long and rushers getting in too quick, sometime beating a man, sometimes missed blocking assignment.

I don't think he has poor pocket presence, not great, but not poor either. I think he wants to hold out as long as possible to make a play. The 91 yard TD against the Raiders is an example of that willingness to stand in there resulting in a big play. Does he sometimes wait too long? Yes. Do all the people who complain about sack ignore the plays like that pass? Yes.

Quality of runner doesn't impact success of play action though...I know I thought that way for a long time, but have seen proof that it doesn't matter.

As for sacks, he took 0 against Oakland. He stepped away from a few, broke out and scrambled, and play-action helped a lot...but he had good protection too (doesn't hurt that Tennessee isn't shy about adding blockers). I've seen him take some he probably shouldn't have taken, but I've also seen some that were pretty much impossible to avoid. And I'm not so sure how big of a "fatal flaw" this is, considering Russell Wilson is the 4th most sacked QB in the league...and nobody complains about his sacks, and all pretty much agree he's elite.

And that’s really the key thing to remember here, because even the best surroundings in the league wouldn’t be expected to produce such a difference in performance, and I don’t think anyone can support the idea that he has anything close to the best surroundings in the league right now.

My personal belief is still that the prime mover is an individual motivational dynamic having synergy with a team dynamic, that in turn elevates the play of everyone involved. There may be other factors as well of course, but I think that’s the prime mover.

What evidence do you have that he is more motivated than in the past?

I personally think he is too. He had to earn his spot in Tennessee, and was behind the 8 ball when it started, and had to beat out an established starter. He's talked about how much he likes this HC and staff...that can be a big factor.

Honestly he looks like he's more active and playing more loosely...I could be wrong, but that's how it comes across to me. He's been given more of a responsibility at the line I think too...he's constantly calling audibles and shifting protections, and seems to be really in command of this offense...he doesn't have those "confused" moments like he had ever so often at Miami. I haven't seen a safety come in on back-to-back plays on an untouched blitz yet.

He's running what looks to me to be a more simple offense, and running it smoothly.

Well I stand, or sit, corrected on the baseball point. I gave up on baseball after the last strike and never went back. I agree completely with your argument with stats adjusted to eras, particularly in football when the rules changes set the eras up so differently. But the point is at this point in time they are not and when someone breaks a given record there is no thought given to that in the record books. Thats why, for one I could care less when someone passes Marino or whomever else on this list or whatever, its apples and oranges. Same thing when Dan broke Tarkentons yardage record, it was completely different things.

But the point I was trying to make was that stats without observation are no better than observation without numbers to back them up.

He did side-step two blitzes last week AND stayed in the pocket....that honestly surprised me. I think he's slightly better in that regard this season.

    Hello Dolphins fans.

Its been a pleasure reading this thread on "Tannetrill", as a Titans fan I am really happy to have him in our roster! The guy looks ten steps ahead of what should of been our franchise QB "Marcus Marifloata". The offense has been pretty impressive, and this is not a suprise. We always had the talent but we just needed a QB that can actually throw the ball and Tanny has proven that he is pretty good in that department.

Whats far more shocking is his doing this with an awful oline. Our pass pro is beyond pathetic (without looking it up, im guessing we rank damn near last) the only bright spot on our oline is Lewan that opens holes for Henry. Our run block scheme is average. But thats it. Allthough I do agree that having a running game helps a QB, but isnt that the case for any elite QBs that are in the league???

Im just hoping Tannehill continues his brilliant play, and I do thank the Dolphins organization for giving us him for only a 4th rd pick and paying him half the salary. Respect! Go Titans! Go Dolphins!

Still not sure I agree. Not to toss my buddy Cbrad under the bus, but numbers like these are true, however in my opinion can't be the end all be all in determining all things football.

Hell, look no further than the cover photo. You will see Todd Gurley and Jared Goff. It is widely known that one of the biggest reasons that offense has struggled is because Todd Gurley hasn't been as effective as early last season.

I enjoy percentages and equations in sports, but if things like this were always the case? All mathematicians would be millionaires and could work 20 Sundays a year betting football in Vegas.

    Good articles however.

The sack argument is a pretty lazy argument.

The titans pass pro has been garbage all season no matter the QB. It looked much more awful when Mariota was under center.

Jack Conklin hasnt been the same since his injury last year. Ben Jones is ***. And Denis Kelly is a backup OT. Lewan is probably the only stud they have on the blindside.

The oline has been so bad that theres plays out there where they get shoved 5 feet away from the play.

I’ve seen that type of passion from him. We all have. Maybe some didn’t recognize it as passion.

You don’t take vicious hits the way he did on a bad team with bad coaching, piss blood and refuse to miss a game without passion.

He never complained. He never showed an ounce of fear. He never gave up.

One of his faults is he’s too nice. He never demanded more from the crap around him.

I think $30 mil per and $90 mil guaranteed over 3 years even is minimum. The shorter the term the more likely its fully guaranteed

anything less than $90 mil and if I’m ryan I test the market and tell titans wait it out. I say that though thinking ryan resigns witb the titans. Cause I think they pony up.

You sure you disagree? I've done analysis like that in the past and found the same thing, but the precise interpretation of the results matters and how you're interpreting this could be the difference between you agreeing and disagreeing with what the stats show.

First, there's a difference between rushing efficiency and rush percent, and the threat of running. If your intuition says that increasing rushing efficiency increases the threat of running and thus the efficiency of play action, the data show that's not true. Same with number of times you rush or the frequency of rushing: they have no statistical effect.

However.. there IS evidence that the threat of running due to situational factors impacts play action efficiency. Play action efficiency is greater when the QB is under center than shotgun (that one is new to me so it's good to see that in those links) and on 1st and 10 rather than on more obvious passing downs. It's also more efficient with larger point differential, and while those links don't show it I showed that the effect was almost completely due to having a lead in the 4th quarter when you're running out the clock.

So those stats aren't showing that the increased threat of running does not impact play action. All they show is that certain things don't increase the threat of running, such as rushing efficiency or rush percent (i.e. how balanced an offense you have). And that might be a bit counter-intuitive for some, but it's a testable claim. So I'd actually argue that this is a case where stats improve your understanding of the game rather than a case where you'd want to just dismiss the stats as incomplete (even if they always are incomplete).

Personally, I never felt like he lacked motivation.

I see the same QB that I saw during the stretch when it came together in 2016. Other than when the team got mauled by Baltimore, it was clicking. Three of those games were passer ratings of 130.6, 130.6, and 124.0. He obviously won't keep up the current pace but I can see him finishing the season with a passer rating in the 115 range.

I agree with the added flexibility at the line.

He may have never lacked motivation, but it's certainly plausible that going from a starter to a backup in the league, and then getting a chance to be a starter again with no guarantees he will keep the job, has increased his motivation from whatever it used to be.
