You can be wrong and not be stupid. If it does come to your doing something stupid, I would be surprised if someone on this forum doesn't point it out to you.

 

I don't think it's ever stupid to be wrong- people who always play it safe or answer every question with "I don't know" just don't get anywhere in life. I said the same thing after predicting 10-6.....I could be off by 5 or 6 games. I have no idea. But that's not going to stop me from sharing my opinion anyway.

I think you're wrong about the O-Line though- I saw a pretty solid pocket last night and I don't believe Tannehill was ever touched. His fumbles were due to the heavy rain; although I wasn't happy, I don't think it's time to write him off just yet either. And I do think we'll be okay at corner and LB this season....certainly not great but a slow progression. I think our strengths more than balance out our weaknesses if we play the right offensive style.

What gets me more excited than anything though is having Gisecki, Drake, Grant and Parker in the red zone...our scoring percentage should be way up because you just can't shut down all 4 on a 3-7 yard play. So there's a lot there to work with if we come out swinging.

 

If we trade Parker, there is literally 0 chance we keep 6 WRs..

Also, I am not sure what you're watching with the offensive line. To think the starting OL has been a disaster is a grossly wrong. Benched Tunsil? And then on the other hand talking about keeping Asiata like he has done something better than terrible is bizarre to me. Surprised they didn't cut him right after the last preseason game he was so cluelessly bad.

 

Who the hell would trade for Devante Parker?

 

I go back and forth with this, but considering his size and speed, he is still our best option for those on our team in his size category. I love Grant, Stills, Amendola, and Wilson, but we still need a taller guy to create certain match up problems for the defense. Unless, we have an opportunity to trade and upgrade, my hope is we still keep Parker this year. If at the end of the season the light bulb still hasn't come on, then we try and upgrade in the draft and FA.

 

I agree. If you have Parker on the right sideline and Gisecki working over the middle, that creates a problem for defenses. That problem benefits Stills, Grant, Wilson and Amendola whether Parker is catching the ball or not. We all know hitting Grant or Drake with a short slant route without defensive help over the top could go for a TD anywhere on the field- that's the benefit Parker brings. Or getting Stills those 1:1 looks as our actual #1 deep threat.

So while he hasn't had that breakout season yet, I think his value is still there either way.

From what I read, he didn't know the playbook well enough. He showed up to camp 20 pounds lighter and spent the entire off-season studying, so he should see some playing time this season.

Also, the people saying he sucks have no idea what they're talking about. Some think that a lineman should drive the defender into the dirt every time on run plays and never once allow a pressure on passes- that person does not exist in the NFL. Even the best teams have pressure on a regular basis.

Asita had a very good preseason and would likely be in the running to start if not for the trades we made. And that's an extremely good problem to have since linemen get banged up during the course of the season...depth is critical at O line.

 

This. The Oline is better than it's been from side to side in years and Tunsil looks much better than last year, still room for improvement though. Tannehill looks perfectly fine to me, once again the lack of points has come from mental errors among others. If I have one big knock on the Gase era it's that the team commits far too many mental mistakes.

I think the offense is going to be ok but I also get the feeling it's going to start slow again. I am still far more concerned with the interior D line and our young Linebackers over persuing and not maintaining their responsibilities.

 

I know many have been critical of Gase's dink and dunk philosophy, but one advantage of getting the ball out early is our OL doesn't have to hold their blocks as long. Couple that with the hurry up, where defenses can't easily rotate guys on and off the field, and we might be able to actually move the ball this year. Here's hoping we can, anyway. :-)

 

And oh yeah, I am so over Parker it's not funny. I'm really disappointed too because he was the guy I wanted in the draft. If his only value comes from his height making him a threat on the field then I don't see any value at all. Biggest Puddin' Pop in the receiver room. And Carroo should be gone as well. I still cant believe they traded up for him.

 

I get the feeling that Tunsil isn't the sharpest tool in the tool shed- I think he needs a veteran mentor to guide him a little to keep him on track. He had that year one in Albert and didn't have anyone last season (in the huddle at least), so I think that's where the drop-off came from. Skill-wise he's an elite player though so I'm not too worried there- he just needs more time than the average lineman to get up to speed. I think he will be pretty good this year and dominant at times, but I'm not expecting those "WTF!?!" moments to just disappear.

In other words, I think he has Jake Long's ability to block....he just doesn't have Jake Long's smarts to lead an offensive line and know what everyone else is doing. Moving him back to guard would limit those learning curves but I don't think that's the long-term answer. He belongs at tackle.

 

Well anyone that allows themselves to be videoed while wearing a bong mask you have to wonder. But I think he will be fine at left tackle for us. I think he is just young more than anything. We'll see.

 

I hear ya. We all are disappointed. Evaluating prospects in the draft can be tough. They are all so well coached up by their agents, etc., it's hard to know what you are really getting. The fact that we actually drafted Fitzpatrick gives me hope that Grier actually does know what he is doing. The problem is, a typical draft isn't loaded with safe prospects like Fitzpatrick. Most of them have some sort of risk, which I am going to guess and say is either on the mental or injury side of things.

 

Couple that with the addition of Wilson and more usage of Drake and Grant in the pass game and we should see more plays like the one Grant housed against KC last year. That was off one of those WR screens so many here hate. IMO those were only questionable calls b/c we had too many poor blockers so the execution was poor. Wilson, Amendola and Grant will be the blockers and runners in those calls more often and they're better blockers and runners so those plays should be effective a higher percentage of the time.

 

I think it would be wise to take a 4th for Parker. We aren't winning the Super Bowl, and I would not give him a big extension. What's the point of having a player on your team that is not making a significant impact in the present and probably isn't in the long term future? Take what we can get for him and move on.

 

Randy Moss was traded for a 4th round pick. Miami would be lucky to get a conditional 6th or 7th for Parker right now.

 

That's all fine and dandy...except where Gase said last week that they absolutely would not trade Parker.

I agree 100%, but the reality is we'd be lucky to get half a bag of stale peanuts for him. And that would probably be a good deal for us.

I am looking at it this way. In the draft, a guy we could take with a 6th or 7th round pick would be a guy we are taking a flier on, right? So, in essence, that is exactly what we are doing with Parker this year. We are taking a flier on him and seeing what he can do. The most likely difference between the two is athletic ability. A guy we could get with a 6th or 7th round pick probably doesn't have the athletic ability Parker does. So, IMO, considering that and what we know about Parker this far, I wouldn't take a 6th or 7th round pick. I would stick with Parker and his superior athletic ability and see we what we have. Both situations are risky, but keeping Parker most likely has the highest upside.

LOL, if I were an NFL head coach I'd be tempted to never punt or kick field goals. That shaves a yard and a half off what you need each down to be productive and the small amounts of data out there says that the lack of returns/more 1st downs more than makes up for eliminating field goals and extra points.

 

Conservatism runs deep in the NFL. It's how the coaches can shift blame to players. It would probably take a higher level organizational directive for a coach to feel "safe" enough to do that.

 

I know there is no stats for it but I’d be willing to bet that when a team has enough time at the end of game to run their 4 minute offense to win or tie, and they know they have four downs to do it, I bet the percentage of them scoring goes way up..

When you know you have four downs to pick up ten yards and have no time constraints, big time advantage

 

I've always been intrigued by the prospect of what an owner/coach in the today's NFL would look like. As in, some billionaire's son grows up to be a good football coach, inherits his fathers team and takes on both roles. What conservative walls would that person be able to shatter with no fear of being fired?

It would be very interesting to see how far the envelope could be pushed.

 

Can you imagine how psychologically deflating it would be for the defense too? Getting stops on 3rd down, only to watch the drive continue on 4th over and over again. Scheming for it would be a complete nightmare too.

 

This is something that an innovative team could capitalize on. I mean, a team kind of in the middle - not bad, but also not a legit Super Bowl team? Do something radical! Eventually, if it caught on and became normalized, this effect would lessen, but it would be interesting.

Someone can disagree if they like, but my take is you won't get the combo of a billionaire's kid who both works hard enough and has the natural ability to be a legitimate head coach, unless they just anoint themselves as one. It's far more likely that as time goes on, a younger and more statistically driven owner might be influenced by a similar GM to find a coach who would implement such a scheme. Would be kind of like the Moneyball baseball thing. I think the current generation of owners are just too stodgy and conservative to embrace that kind of thing - plus, being old, they are less prone to taking risks that could "set the franchise back" ... you know, beyond "that" point.

 

The mistake I see often is when teams have enough time at the end of a game, and they have to score, they don’t use their regular based offense and treat the situation like they should, they panic and go away from what they would do in let’s say the beginning of a game in base offense..

4 downs to pick up 10 yards..2.5 yards a carry.
