I think I prefer Clabo out of the 3 and Winston would be my second choice.

 

If we're talking strait up 1 year of play...Mckinnie is the best player, problem is contract length and what he desires.

Free agent RT Tyson Clabo will visit the Dolphins Tuesday night.

Now that the Branden Albert trade has cooled, the Dolphins are moving on to other options. They've looked at both Bryant McKinnie and Eric Winston, and will now kick the tires on the best free right tackle available in Clabo. However, we're still not sure this would solve the Dolphins' real problem -- keeping Jonathan Martin off Ryan Tannehill's blind side. Clabo is a power blocker that has no NFL experience at left tackle.

I love to see Clabo on our offensive line, very good RT and would make the whole unit much better.

 

Winston seems like the perfect, since he is a ZBS specialist. But I am not sure why they haven't pulled the trigger. There is something they don't like about him. Bryant is the best player, but the worst fit. Over sized, old, OL men with a long history of off field trouble, and bad attitudes are EXACTLY the type of player they are trying to stay away from. But if they have any fear of Martin playing on the left (which I don't think they do have), then Bryant is about the only FA option. Clabo would be about the same quality player as Winston but not as much experience with ZBS. Then of course there is still Brandon Albert.

 

You hit the nail on the head with Mckinnie except you can add slow to the list. I honestly do not think he is the best player out of the 3. I'd take Clabo or Winston hands down personally. I like Clabo's nastiness personally but realize Winston is prob. a better fit scheme-wise.

 

As a right tackle I agree with your Reef, but I thought we were talking about left tackle here, I thought we are trying to not let Martin protect Ryan's blindside.

 

Never fails, we bring him in, don't sign him, he does well per PFF, our tackles are stinky wash rinse repeat.

 

Sure we will end up signing some one this week... I think Martin has all the tools to be a good LT. [long arms, quickness, good feet but.. he needs to get stronger... they say he looks bigger and stronger now]

 

Atlanta runs the ZBS....he has some experience...

All depends on their analysis of Martin and how much they think he will improve.
They should have just kept Long but I digress.

 

They drafted Martin as a LT. He played RT to get his ears wet. he will be the LT.

 

Tyson Clabo is a better option than Eric Winston I think. He's a better player but not as good as a scheme fit, but I'm not entirely sure the Dolphins are going to be outside zone all day everyday.

 

This is a tough decision...If McKinnie's in shape he's a pretty good blindside protector, but he's not as good of a player as Clabo. Clabo is one of the better RT's in football, but signing him means gambling on Martin on the left side, which is something I'm not sure I'm willing to do yet.

 

We still need a tackle, but I hope we sign Winston. Plus i believe we still have good amount of cap room.

I don't understand why everyone is giving up on Martin so quickly. He really needs a fair shot at starting. Is he really that bad? This is a guy who had a first round grade in last seasons draft. I thought he showed flashes of living up to that potential throughout the season. Not sure why everyone is so down on him. He's a young guy and linemen traditionally take a little bit longer to develope in the NFL. I think Martin will be just fine for us. He's the main reason I think we parted ways with Jake Long.
As for Clabo i'm all for adding him. I think he's a fine OT.

 

Just pleased to see Ireland taking time to do his due diligence, make certain we sign the one best fit for our ZBS and apparently, RT. Just hope they're right that Martin can protect Tanny's backside at LT. Something I believe they drafted him to ultimately do, and given he's had 4 games (albeit not very good) experience at LT in the NFL, and now with a FULL offseason weight training to strengthen up, let's see what he can do there. JMHO

 

Maybe he will be the Dolphins LT this year, but I predict he won't be a good LT. He is a below average tackle in the NFL and I would be surprised if he is still the starting LT for the entire season.

Once the coaching staff sees Tannehill getting hit consistently because of Martin, they will have to do something to upgrade the position. I just hope it won't be after Tannehill is injured because of a hit from the blindside.

I just don't think that they have as much faith in Martin at LT as some on here do. In my opinion if they believed that Martin was the answer at Left Tackle they would have said so once Long was signed elsewhere. My biggest fear is if Martin plays Left tackle and is not the answer we have no other options. As bad as we all want Tannehill to be the Franchise Quarterback we have all wanted he will not play as well if there is a problem at Left Tackle. I want Martin to be that Left Tackle we all want him to be but I am just not that confident that he is.

 

Wake was quoted to have said that Martin was the most improved player over the course of last season. You would think he knows since he saw him in practice every day...

I figure we play Martin at left this year. We have to know going forward whether or not he's going to be able to do the job. If at the end of the season he is still struggling we pull the trigger on one in the draft next year. We just need a right tackle at this point. Clabo would be my 1st choice but I would have no problem with Winston.

 

I believe this to be true now... During last year's draft, many here stated that Martin was borught in to replace Long if Long failed to re-sign this year... They plugged him in RT last year to get experience...

Well now their plan has come to fruition and they are ready for Martin to take the position which he was drafted for... I don't believe this FO/coaches are afraid to place him in there (at LT)...

Unfortunately they don't feel good enough about the right side, so they are looking for a veteran there till they see if one of the young ones look the part...

 

i don't know what they r gonna do at tackle,, but i think it was smart to get through the draft before announcing it to the world. i know they were in talks before the draft, but the fact is they did not sign anyone. they left all options open and that was a smart play. now you can't keep the secret, we'll know pretty soon whether they think martin can handle lt or not. they r looking at tackles,, based on the contract they give and to whom they give it, we'll be able to guess whether the signing is for a lt/rt. even if we can't guess we'll find out in ota/mini/training camp,, whatever they do i'll have some faith cause i like philbin and i like our oline coach.

 

What is a problem to me is that a good number of posters are ready to bail on Martin after his rookie season. The impression seems to be that he's a bum because he started the season at right tackle after playing his college career (IIRC) at left tackle (It's not THAT easy a switch!) Then, a little more than halfway through the season, he was called upon to switch back to left tackle AS A ROOKIE! Demanding that a rookie make no mistakes is an exercise in abject futility at best, and after shuffling across the line - utterly nonsensical. We owe it to the lad to see what he can do - it is, after all, what we drafted him to do. From what I have read, he has put on some muscle mass, and hopefully, if he is as diligent in the mental aspect as that report would seem to indicate in the physical aspect - he should be improved. (It is, after all, not unknown for players to improve between rookie and sophomore year!) And, until they put on pads and start snapping for real, all we have is last year to go on when there were a lot of things to be moaned over and b*tched about. Again, the obvious thing is that we do not know how he looks at this time, how much stronger he is, and how well he has learned and studied the position between last years introduction to professional tackle, and this year.

Look at the bright side... If he can at least play both sides without falling on the ground and wriggling like an epileptic snake as a rookie, and has the capacity to grow (He DID graduate from Stanford!) - what do we have to lose by giving the lad a chance?

 

Martin at LT and Clabo at RT is fine with me. We run a hybrid offensive scheme, its not strictly zone blocking folks. Clabo would be a great fit for this offense or any offense for that matter. Brandon Albert, IMO, is bad news waiting to happen. Could be a VERY EXPENSIVE mistake with his back issues. Would rather live with Martin and if he does not work out, find another one next year. Rome was not built in a year or two.

 

I totally disagree DaFins. They are looking at tackles because Martin is the only one we've got....makes sense to me....

 

I don't see how you came to that conclusion. You could be right I just don't see it. If that were the case then why would they pass on Albert? I think it's coming down to their projections of the other players on the roster vs. the cost of adding a vet FA. Mr Ross has opened up his wallet this off season. I would hope with all the wheeling and dealing they wouldn't be skimping on such a core position as LT.
