ESPN - Source: 49ers plan to fire coach Nolan after Sunday's game - NFL This was expected prior to the season by a few of us here. I'm surprised they are planning on firing him mid-season though. Singletary will be a good HC in this league IMO. However, I also expect Martz to be a top candidate for this.
He's spent time as a DL coach, LB coach, WR's coach and DC. I think all those spots are taken so I don't see it happening.
Ooo. I don't see it happening either but its certainly not out of the question. The latest is that Nolan could be fired tonight according to Mortensen of ESPN on MNC.
I could see Martz having a hissy fit if Nolan is fired and Singletary is given the HC job. Unless by now, he's realized he's a better OC than HC
Breaking News: Niners Nolan gets the axe. He has been fired, a little over an hour ago according to a report by Mortensen. EDIT: Mike Singletary has been offered the job and has accepted.
i just finished reading a San francisco chronicle (sfgate.com) article that specifically quoted their GM saying "we think Mike gives us the best chance to win." Less than two hours after writing the article, mikey is gone....Sad really, i'm gonna miss the suit on the sideline. He is a class act, but an awful personnel evaluator.
About time for Singletary to get a shot IMO. Unfortunate that it comes like this but he deserved it anyway it came.
Boom, Ditka, Tom, Chris, and meshawn got all over the 49 ownership.. and wonder just how successful Mike can be given that situation.
Yeah, this is a move that doesn't make a lot of sense, least to me. In some ways, I suspect Nolan's fate was tied to Alex Smith. Lotsa turmoil in the Bay area this year. When was the last time 3 coaches were fired during the year? I don't recall that ever happening. Goes to show that owner patience and fan patience gets shorter and shorter every year.
It'll be interesting to see what happens with Singletary... I wanted him as our HC before we hired Sparano. Some say he's not an X's and O's kind of guy. But I think he is going to instill fear in his players which may translate to results on the field. Look at what happened in St. Louis. Haslett has turned that ship around, and I suspect SF Front Office took notice.
IMO it was a good move by the 49ers. I mean hes in his 5th year and has gone nowhere but backward. It was time. There is a difference between firing a coach every year ala Oakland and making a move that needed to be made ala San Fran or St. Louis. But yeah, there are some owners in this league that IMO Goodell should look at trying to move out of that position. Im not sure how he could, or if he would, but some owners just dont make the commitment to winning that they should. There will be some big changes in San Fran though. I dont see both Singletary and Martz coming back next year, its one or the other imo.
