Looks like it’s the long-awaited CDMA iPhone 4. Here’s hoping a bunch of people leave AT&T for Verizon and thus makes my AT&T service even better. :lol:

 

curious to see this. I'm kind of excited. My ATT contract is coming up,a nd I'm looking for a way to reduce my costs :P

1. Did the address the "no data while on the phone" issue?
2. Which iphone will this be? Iphone 4? Will they get the new iphone when ATT does?
3. Will it cost less for a plan and still give me unlimited data?
4. Does it use that fancy new chip that will allow the phone to be on either network?

No. This is an inherent property of the CDMA radio technology that Verizon and Sprint use. Maybe they’ve come up with some weird hack to get around it, like installing two CDMA radios, but then you’d get double the battery drain and a bigger load on Verizon’s network.

Unknown but unlikely due to physical space being at a premium inside the iPhone 4’s case, plus the Verizon iPhone 4’s case is different from the AT&T iPhone 4’s case.

My suggestion? If your contract is up or nearly up, just wait until June for the iPhone 5.

 

id tell you all to forget about attnt, verizon and the iphone. and get the mytouch 4g on tmobile.
thats only if you want wifi hotspot capabilities and USB tethering at no additional charges and video chatting without being on wifi. all on mothly rate plans cheaper then verizon or attnt.


but i understand the other side of the argument too. i mean everyone has an iphone.
what other reason(s) is there to get an iphone that im overlooking?

 

Weren’t you the one who had a thread on which phone to buy? I recall that thread ending by the OP becoming too impatient to wait for the iPhone 4 and buying something else.

And without turning this into a debate thread, I’ll just say that image quality on 3G video chat is crap.

In addition to 3G video chat not being an advantage due to ****ty image quality, the Verizon iPhone will function as a wifi hotspot.

 

It will be interesting to see how the battery life holds up when the phone is being used as a wifi hotspot. I know the Droids batteries do not last long at all, and since you can't interchange the battery on an IPhone......

Desides, since you the phone can't do data and voice at the same time, how will it operate as a hotspot? I'm guessing more along the lines that it might just act as an access point, and that it will need wifi access.

Edit: after reading the link you posted I guess it will truly be a 3G hotspot. Im still confused as to whether you can make a call while using it as a hotspot.

i definately did not "become too impatient to wait for an iphone 4" as changing to a worse provider and spending more money every month for worse/less service, wasnt an option for me.
"wait for the next coming of the iphone" was your answer before, as is now.

i wanted a phone without waiting for something that wasnt even announced yet. so i got the best one available at the time. it may not be the best one anymore, but the iphone certainly doesnt just win by default every time.

mytouch 4g should have better then 3g connection capabilities (4g/HSPA or whatever it is)..... and regardless, being able to have poor video quality over 3g connection is FAR better then NO video chat what-so-ever without wifi.

its the first phone ive seen thats made me regret getting my phone. now my mother has one. my girlfriend has one. her brother has one. and when i walked into my bosses office a week ago, he had a brand new one sitting on his desk.

i own stock in apple so it benefits me a little when people just buy the iphone without thinking about it.
but i honestly think the mytouch 4g on tmobile is the best option.

i only wish i would have gotten some HTC stock at 200 when i got my phone.

Follow-ups to the VeriPhone 4 announcement:

1. Verizon will sell CDMA-enabled iPads. Currently they only sell wifi-only iPads.

2. iOS 4.3 could bring the Personal Hotspot feature to GSM iPhones. Not to say AT&T, but just GSM. AT&T will apparently never add this feature.

Tethering works the same way any other Verizon phone would. And I would imagine that, since the phone is operating as a wifi hotspot, it’s using the data connection and is therefore unable to receive calls.

I believe at the time you were asking, the iPhone 4 had yet to be released, but was only a few weeks off. Therefore the question was whether you should get an iPhone 3GS, wait for the iPhone 4, or go an alternate route. That’s my recollection, anyway…

1) First is pretty dumb: So no data on phone means you can't be on the phone and using the internet at the same time? Like if I were on the phone I couldn't go to Google and search for a restaurant?

Yes that is the downside to CDMA phones as compared to GSM.

2 different technologies. the rest of the world uses GSM while Verizon and Sprint run mostly CDMA currently, but are going to move towards GSM in the future.

well basically your phone is using data and its signal, your phone is plugged into your computer. Your computer uses the phone to connect to the internet, through the cell phone signal. so if your tethering your laptop, you can get on the internet anywhere you can get signal with your phone.

 

Verizon's 4G network was built to allow Data and voice at the same time. This phone does NOT use their new 4G network. As it stands there's not much of a reason for me to switch. I'll wait for the iphone 5..if Verizon gets it and it's on their 4G network that allows data and voice at the same time..I'm soooooo there. If not..i'll have to think about it.

You’re misunderstanding the issue. The cell phone radio technology that Verizon’s network uses, CDMA, can’t do two things at the same time. You can either make a call or you can do something data-related, such as browse the Internet or read your email. You can’t do both at the same time. With GSM/HSPA, which is AT&T’s radio technology, can. While you’re on a call on an AT&T iPhone, you can switch it to speaker and browse the Internet or load up another app.

The issue isn’t that there’s no data, the issue is that, on Verizon’s network, you can’t use data and voice simultaneously. So if you want to double-check an email while you’re on a conference call, you’re SOL unless you use AT&T.

Different radio technologies. GSM is a worldwide standard, CDMA is basically limited to Verizon, Sprint, and a couple of international carriers. Both are nearing the end of their lives, as the next generation of cell phone radio technology, LTE (which is called 4G in carrier advertisements, though they’re trying to claim that HSPA is also 4G for marketing purposes) is starting to come online. Sprint and Verizon have very limited LTE networks at the moment, and AT&T’s isn’t scheduled to come into service until 2013.

I'm on Verizon and due for an upgrade. How do I ensure that I can get one when they are released?

 

Tethering uses a wire and frequently interrupts any tethering session if a text or call comes in. A hotspot is wireless and can handle more then one device that is wifi capable. For example if I use the hotspot feature on my droid i can wirelessly connect to my laptop, i pod touch and i pad. The only negative to the hotspot feature is that if you have more then one device running on that signal your speed will slow down.

I love my Evo 4g from Sprint...many Verizon subscribers drool at it aswell.

The Android Market is a sick joke, and the aftermarket support for a given Android phone is limited at best and usually close to nonexistent.

There is no better combination of specs, battery life, and functional capability.

Listen, if you’re happy with an inferior implementation of a feature, good for you. iOS owners who want to video chat over 3G can use Skype, which added the feature a little while ago. But I doubt too many of them will, because in the end, low quality is low quality.

Yeah, AAPL’s share price has been going up for years. Not saying that isn’t happening. I’m saying the iPhone is just a part of, not the primary driver, of that share growth. So if you think that iPhone owners a. buy their phones impulsively and ignorantly, and b. that’ll be the primary driver of future AAPL price growth, you’re wrong on both counts.

Thats not actually explained properly. If you have a new every two credit then its still able to be used on an i phone from my understanding when that rolls out. It just wont be there going forward after that next upgrade.
