He's the General Manager... and it's not uncommon practice for them to have a big say-so on the player acquisitions. Our owner gave him full personnel selection privelages/powers, which was seemingly an issue in the whole Fisher debacle.. (him not wanted to share his "toys" on the playground).

Edit: I'm sure our new Coach has some say on the players, obviously, which is also why we are seemingly pursuing Flynn. But overall, Ireland is the overlord

 

This is a bit over simplifying it. Our owner gave this power to a gm for the reason that he is versed in personel matters. The coaches work with the personel people, gm scouts etc to get the best players.

BUT TO ANSWER CRAZYS QUESTION. Th GM gets players for the coach with there input. BUT THE COACH ALWAYS SETS THE SQUAD

 

Well they are seemingly more openminded to our new coaches needs in players because of the new style of offense he is going to run. (thankfully). So maybe trading Marshall and the other decisions he makes will end up being worth while and we have a decent offseason overall. We will see. It does kind of suck, so I understand your point of view (you share it with many MANY fans) but at the very least it looks like he may be coming around for our new, HC. in a "type of player he will get as opposed to what he used to get" aspect.

 

Yeah. This is also true. but you pretty much have an idea of what the squad is going to be from the personnel picked in the first place. but yeah pretty much.

 

What leads you to believe that the coach isn't having an impact on the decisions Ireland is making?

 

As I was saying before, this seems to be the case thus far, a little too early to tell... but hopefully it is the case

 

Crazy, note the coach has alot of things to do with his own players. The GM handles the recruitment, scouting of college talent, semi pro ect.. The coach is very involved in letting the people know what he needs. Its up to the people that have time to watch the players available to find those players that the coach wants. Thats the debate going on is our GM getting the right players time will tell. But again coach sets teh squad

edit: Crazy in euro football the squad size smaller and teh game is less physical. In NFL the team rosters 50+ men and plays only 11 at a time, with the physical nature theres a need for much more depth as we call it to swap players. The coach doesnt have time to look at all those people during recruitment. even in football(soccer) you have someone looking for talent

 

And on the other hand... a good many franchises have been run into the ground by a Head Coach who also fancied himself a good General Manager.... for example - Don Shula.

Well, for openers, for sure... but JB Brown, Sammie Smith, Jackie Shipp, Lo Hampton and a few others were head scratchers all by themselves.

 

Got me there, but so much good out the bunch I cant speak bad of the man. Except again for olivehead he ruined Marinos and Shulas career
