I have actually seen that in Iceland where I was stationed in the U.S Navy and in Chile which has 100 active volcanoes.

Its static electricity manifested in the atmosphere by particle charged ash.

Quite spectacular beaten only by the Aurora Borealis which I have also seen.Dancing lights in the skyline due to solar flare activity.
