Man, Vontae had a hell of a game tonight. Hopefully he puts to bed the critics. Even if he has a few mistakes next week, remember the guy is only 21and a rookie. Mistakes are to be expected but the kind of game he had tonight only a few players are capable of. Him and Sean Smith are going to be the best CB tandem we had since Surtain and Madison, maybe even better. We are set for the next seven to ten years at the CB position

Davis played almost all of the game. I think we'll see Smith do the same next week.

thats what had me scratchiung my head. I thought he played well too overall last week. Then all I read is how he's immature and doesnt take the game seriously enough. WTF? I think tonight laid to rest the argument that this guy didnt deserve to go in the first round. Tight coverage, strong run support, great tackling....it was the entire package

i felt very reassured after watching him last game. im not gonna rewrite my points, but i saw more than just a few colossal bonehead plays. he's got the moxy, smarts, and athleticism to succeed at cb.

Donald Thomas had a great game from what I could see.

Bokamper complimenting Jake Grove and Thomas. Also Shawn Murphy. Said he spent a lot of time looking at those two guards and the center tonight. Said they did a very good job moving people.

I spent a little time watching Grove tonight and he looked very good from the plays I saw. Maybe someone will evaluate his whole game to make sure but from what I saw he's ready for prime time. Murphy looked improved from last week and Thomas was solid except for one play where he didnt hit anybody and just sort of stood there

sorry misconstrued your comment. actually you're right you did defend the guy. actually a few did and most couched their criticism by saying it was still early. I can just imagine what it was like at the zoo

Truth be told I'm pretty anxious to see who gets the start among the CBs and who plays the 3rd, since #3 preseason game is typically a game that features the starters on into the 2nd half.
I'm thinking Smith will start with Davis coming in as the 3rd CB. But what I think doesn't mean a thing.:dunno:

To be honest, look what Troy Williamson did against the Bucs. He looked real good to me last week. The light could be turning on for him much like our pal Ted Ginn. So if Troy Williamson managed to snooker Vontae for a play or two, well, he's turning into a pretty good player.

Laurent Robinson also looks awesome over in St. Louis. Nice trade for them.

I haven't watched the game yet but I don't think one game will put his critics to bed because he's been doing some (negative) things for years in college. He was an inconsistent performer in college in my opinion despite what some of his statistics might suggest. He has the ability to be a lock down cornerback in this league but I think he has to work more on the field. I saw him have mental lapses in college, blow coverage and disappear in run support after one hit that was a momentum swinger. However, I've seen games where he's absolutely dominated while playing on an island with no help over the top. Like I said, I think over the last few years, he's been an inconsistent performer and because of that, I think he went in the mid twenties. I do think he was one of the better cornerbacks however, especially when it came down to potential. I just think he needs to put it all together. Will he do so at this level? I'm not ready to say yes or no, especially not after two pre-season games.

Re: Last week - he wasn't great but he wasn't bad either in my opinion. He was inconsistent.

I said before the preseason that Vontae would get the start opposite Alllen because he was the more complete CB who would play the run as well as the pass. Smith looked really good last week so I dont know anymore. I personally like Vontae's all around game morre than Smiths but Smith looks like he can stick with anyone.

On a side note, I have to give it to the people on this site though. Every year they pick out one guy that kind of flies under my radar and sure enough they are dead on.

Last year it was Bess and this year Smith. I kinda liked both players but wasnt overly excited about either. But people on this site loved both and they were dead on:lol:

I was going to make that comment about Williamson last week. Its funny you say that but thats exactly what I think is going on with Williamson. Him and Ginn are kind of on the same career path IMO

They were much better this week than last... hard to completely feel good though since we went from Jax interior D with big John Henderson to Car's interior D minus Kimowhatever his name is.... Still DT is a beast... can we extend him to a long term deal already? Maybe have Carey chip in a few of his own $??

I was critical of his play last week-three penaltys is not the way you want to start out.Tonight he played well and I hope he plays better next game.Good game Mr Davis.

VD picked it up tonight no doubt about it... however, some of his compadres in the secondary weren't so good... YB got picked on a bit and Gibril didn't have a good game... Culver got picked on a bit too... We missed having Sean Smith and Jason Allen IMO...

i love how the front office saw our biggest problem and addressed it in the 1st and 2nd round, and free angency. Of course the latter example is no longer with us. lol. I hope we do something like this every year with our biggest needs. I wonder what position we will attack next year? i wouldn't mind seeing us go after a WR in the 1st and 2nd round, and free agency.

I doubt you see this organization go with a wide receiver in the first round. I could see third but first, I don't see it. I think we'll go outside linebacker and nose tackle. Probably safety and offensive line as well. I could see cornerback again in the late round.

Vontae got beat on a feww short passes but let me tell you he had the receivers on complete prison lockdown down the field. I almost wish his nickname was "The Warden".

Also very impressed with his tackling.

What constitutes being beat on short throws? Allowing them to catch it and then tackling them for a loss?

I was impressed on that screen pass. I dont mean "beat" I just mean there were a couple 3-4-5 yard passes completed on him. I'm not saying he played badly on those throws. My point is that the only completions he allowed were in front of him and thats amazing to see in a young corner.

Its kind of funny last week everyone had a love affair with Chris Williams and were down on Vontae Davis, this week everyone is down on C.Williams and having a love affair with Davis.
I have to say myself Davis was pretty dominant tonight, and I have to think his future looks bright. Good job Vontae.
