We're not gonna crucify a front office for not selecting Ryan Tannehill at 8 right.?
If that is the direction I'am picking up here perception wise, from part of the fanbase, you have got to be kidding, I hope we're not gonna be that gullible with the kind of intel we have right now on the prospect..
This is mike Sherman's call, just as Flynn was Philbins call...
Let's think this thru, let's understand the dynamics of it, the variables in play, and how a decision like this would be handled, to me, the Gm is gonna make the call strictly on the intel of what his coordinator and coach come up with in this prospect...If they want him and think he's the guy their both willing to attach themselves to, then Ireland will make the pick, like taking candy from a baby this # 8 pick is..If they do not, he won't, it's as simple as that..
If you don't agree with this IMO no brainer scenario, I surely would like to hear your logic behind your opinion???

People have their opinions on players all the time.
Personally, if Tannehill is there at #8, I would take him and I think the fins should take him.
This regime needs to earn our trust, particularly Ireland. If we pass on Tannehill and get a Weeden then ok. If we don't, an explanation will be necessaryBoik14, fins4o8, GARDENHEAD and 1 other person like this. -
Obviously I don't come at this with any expertise, but Wilson's height scares me. Certainly he has skills but a QB succeeding at his height in the NFL is really unprecedented. Brees is a full inch taller than him and Brees is the exception to the rule.
Now, I wouldn't hate a Wilson pick, and would rather take a flyer on him than a stiff like Cousins, but I want to stop merely taking flyers on guys. Give me a blue chipper.Sleepy, MAFishFan, bran and 1 other person like this. -
But I do think that Tanny/Weeden are on the next level by themselves and then there is everybody else.
Perhaps wilson will break the mold, but there is no precedent for long term success in the NFL at that height. He reminds me a bit of Senecca Wallace. Nice player, good backup, won't kill you if you have to play him, but not a guy you want to hitch your wagon to. -
I say again, I don't know enough to rate QB's, but you cannot tell me that Weeden, Tannehill or Wilson don't have a real chance to be franchise. You also cannot tell me that this franchise has made QB a priority since Marino. You also can't tell me that we increase our odds of getting a franchise QB by not picking one in the first round.
It is time to gamble and to continue to gamble until we get our franchise guy. Anything less is unacceptable. -

I've said in numerous posts I want a QB with "first round talent". I will not be ok if they try and get cute though. At this point, I'm not in favor of our FO passing on Tanny in hopes a Weeden or Wilson will be available later. Get the QB you want now. We can no longer afford to add even more variables to the QB search.
Yes, that means if their guy is Wilson or Weeden I want them to take him at 8. -

The problem I have is that if Sherman and Philbin say that they don't think Tannehill is a "franchise" guy, but Wilson is, it would be very hard for Ireland to take him.djphinfan likes this. -
I'm gonna restate somethings about QB's, the draft and the NFL:
1. You cannot win consistently without a franchise QB. Yes you need a solid defense particularly a solid d-line. But QB is number one on the list. This cannot be realistically argued.
2. Franchise QB's are overwhelmingly found in the first round and becomes less likely with each round. This cannot be realistically argued.
3. The draft has changed thanks to the rookie cap. There is considerably less penalty for missing in the first round. This cannot be realistically argued.
4. We haven't had a franchise QB since Marino and we haven't spent a first rd pick on one either. This cannot be realistically argued.
Everyone can come up with their own way to process those four simple facts. After the first two picks there are 3 QBs with legitimate first round talent but each has a major flaw. Weeden's is age, Tanny's is lack of experience and Wilson's is height. None of those flaws are reason enough for us to not take one of them at 8. There is no position/player we can draft at 8 that will have more of an impact than a franchise QB. Not a DE, not a WR. None.
At some point in the future, GM's are going to realize they can pick QB's high every year because the penalty is so low. When that happens and it will, a QB's value in the draft is going to change drastically. It simply makes no sense anymore to say Wilson/Weeden/Tanny aren't first round prospects. They each have a 50% or better chance to be franchise at the most important position in the league. There is no better definition of first round value than that...especially now that their rookie salaries won't put a team into cap hell.
We can no longer leave the most important position to our success up to journeyman and second round picks. It has not worked and the fact that it hasn't worked...cannot be realistically argued.Phyl, Da 'Fins and GARDENHEAD like this. -

And if some are mad, then be mad at someone else besides the front office..cause # 8 is not their decision. -

Using your logic, taking Osweiler at 8 would be a successful pick, regardless of how he plays.xphinfanx likes this. -

Sherman has no authority on any pick. I'm sure Ireland will listen to his opinion but it's Ireland call at the end of the day. Same thing with Flynn. If we pass on Tanny and two years from now he's a top 10 QB then it's Ireland's fault. -

The draft shouldn't be judged before the players actually play. To criticize passing on a player regardless of how that player plays is just silly. -
How do we know where NFL teams have Osweiler rated? -
