I'll accept that Im coming accross as negative but imo I'm looking at who we've lost vs who we've added and thinking it doesn't quite add up.

We indeed trimmed fat. That'll allow extensions for Tannehill, Pouncey, Vernon, etc. But do you think we have a better team for 2015 than we had on 2013 or 2014? I'm not seeing it.

    Kenny Stills is replacing Wallace.

Not an upgrade, however not that big of a downgrade.

We will see, but I really like the idea of Clay and Cameron on the same field. So I hope they resign Clay.

My respect level for Wallace far exceeds my respect level for Philbin.

Free agency isn't even a week old. There is a lot of offseason to go. Have a little patience before comparing 2015 to 2014.

    - WR (including a draftee)
    - TE (even w/o Clay...loads better with...which I believe is part of this whole plan)
    - OC (Lazor has a year under his belt...swam fairly well, definitely didn't sink)
    - LBs (Wheelerbe gone, + through -...nobody injured for the season...draftee and/or FA incoming)
    - Salary Cap futures...in great shape
    - Attractiveness (seems we can finally draw in some real talent, finally)
    - Philbin/Coyle REALLY in the hot seat (win-win situ)
    - Personnel Management w/balls...

Judging by this offseason so far, I think it's a safe assumption to make that MT plans on filling the holes...and has the juice to pull it off.

Offensive weapons are better. Defensive line is waaaayyy better. There is one position that is not as good as last year. And that's Safety. But alas, the off season is not done. Why are you already trying to compare teams.

You want two TEs who can't block? That's kind of a risk when both have injury histories, want 7-9 million, on a team that wants to be balanced run vs pass no?

Do you think we got worse? Again, all the players let go, aside from Wallace, are replaceable in production or simply didn't produce at all.

Suh improves us tremendously on the defensive end. Stills lessens Wallace's loss. Cameron could make up Hartline's production easily and then some. Clay can still be resigned. The team has money left to make moves. The draft is still to happen as well as undrafted free agents.

The team is definitely in better position to improve now than they were a week ago.

They can block defensive backs, and if they put out linebackers, spread them out.

They block perfectly for this offense.

Also, Clay is fine at blocking.

I have to say, as much as I am loving Tannenbaum, I remember that he had trouble keeping the Jets stocked with any sort of elite talent at WR.

Will we end up with lots of good receivers but no great ones? Possible.

Dion Sims still on the team last I checked. Clay is also an improved blocker and Cameron can block on the perimeter well enough. You don't need bruising TEs to block effectively in this offense.

I get where you're coming from. It sucks it didn't work out with Wallace but the team is better for it. The team could never maximize his talent and he is getting paid top 5 wide receiver money when he isn't even a top 10 or 15 WR in the league. The cap space created by trading him can make the team better. Hopefully they can sign one or two more free agents. The team had to cut him. He didn't want to take a pay cut. Idk what more the Dolphins could have done.

My standards are high. I'm wondering how we're gonna sweep the Bills/Jets and play NE to a draw.

Im all about waiting for the rest of FA and the draft to let things play out but I'm not about declaring the off season, or the off season to far, a success.

I wanna win. Not just win. I wanna physically dominate and beat people's asses. I won't be satisfied till I see a roster capable of doing that and Imo right now we have a ways to go.

That is true. If Miami does sign Clay then they are close enough. Myself I was never high on Gibson. Stills should be good enough to stretch the field. Cameron is a huge upgrade in this offense over Hartline. Still have Landry.

And yet he is currently counting against the cap, and is our property until/unless he signs an offer sheet from another team and we refuse to match, or we rescind his tag entirely.

So I would definitely consider him ours until the time comes that he surely isn't.

But that's the point though, there are still moves to be made and a draft to play. They're making moves to put themselves in position to make further moves. We have to wait and see how it all plays out.

They are more flexible and in better position now to make things happen than they were 2 weeks ago.

We had ways to go 2 weeks ago too. Difference is now we're better positioned to make progress as opposed to before where we were hamstrung and chained.

By the way, we also have no idea how the Dolphins see and rate all the young backups they have. We saw Jelani Jenkins be flung into the fire when Ellerbe got hurt and rise up successfully. Who's to say the same won't happen when or if the other backups are place in the same position. We have some backups who could make noise. (McCain, Tripp, Fede, Taylor, Williams, heck even Aikens. God forbid they learn to use Jordan as well.)

Cmon now don't give me the noob treatment lol. I know we have Sims but if Clay comes back we won't exactly be able to play him w/o pissing Cam/Clay off.

You say we don't need bruising TEs and I agree. But teams w good CBs like NY or Buffalo, teams we have to beat, are gonna man up vs our current WRs, bring a S down, double our TE and dare us to throw outside. We're gonna have to have answer for that and TBH it's not on the roster right now.

You don't want to call it a success yet. That's fine. This team is certainly not done yet. But don't call it a failure either. Wait for things to play out.

I like the sound of that. Lets make more moves w the space we've created. Till then, I'm in the "show me camp".

What I love is that most of the forum is optimisic, it's been a long time since I could say that.

Why can't the 2 play together? I think they can very well be both featured in 2 TE sets and both release to the pass. They are both athletic, versatile and good receiving. Heck Jordan Cameron can lineup in the perimeter on certain snaps and play WR, he has done so before in Cleveland and been successful at it. He was a WR in college. Clay can lineup as H-back too, as he has done plenty.

I think WR and MLB first 2 rounds. I think that it is imperative for the team to get a FS in free agency. What good guards are left? I'm hoping with this money freed up and if Clay leaves they can sign a FS and a G.

A lot of cautious people are in the "show me camp" how could you not when this team has failed to deliver time and time again for quite some time. I'm not too excited, apart from the normal excitement new acquisitions bring. Just, as always, I am willing to let them fail before I criticize them. Who knows, maybe this time they won't.

OK here is where you see Philbin's weakness come in. Given his lack of ability to see when to switch out starters (or just when to change strategy in general), you shouldn't bank on the Dolphins doing this well until he leaves. Tannenbaum + Hickey ain't gonna do that for Philbin.

Fair enough. But then, cutting up all the fat kinda forces the coaches hand, doesn't it. If I take all your under-performing veterans away, you've got no choice but to trust the young players. Hence Jelani Jenkins all but forced to be allowed to play significant snaps due to injuries and raising up the the occasion.

Cameron is getting 7.5 million, Clay has 7 mill on the table and hasn't signed. They both play the same position, unless we're paying 7+ million for an H-back. Put em both on the field vs any decent base D and the run game is severely hampered, most teams will go nickel and dare is to run.

    Great post.

I wanna see the finished product before I get excited. I don't hold past failures against the current decision makers but I know how hard it is to build a winner and I'm not convinced that we've done enough, too may questions left unanswered.

I don't agree. Dolphins are not going for a power running team, but running out of spread. Jordan and Clay together will spread the field and force plenty of mismatches like two dynamic passing TEs can. You going to try to cover them with corners and safeties, you're going to get mismatches. You're going to pull linebackers to cover them, then the run is open.

Plenty of positives to look at by playing 2 dynamic TEs together. And again, Cameron can line up on the outside. He can do what Hartline did, only at 6'5" 260 pounds

Yeah, give a person fewer ways to fail and the probability he will fail is less than it was before. But Philbin is still the one that will ultimately decide which of those younger guys + some extra FA bodies I'm sure we'll sign gets the nod. And that's where there are still enough options available to see his boneheaded decision-making rear its head.

We'll see.. I'm certainly much more optimistic about this team in 2015 (even with Philbin) than I was just a few weeks ago.

Watching Mike Wallace sent to a team he doesn't want to go to and won't be successful with is hilarious. Schadenfreude all around, and no small measure of poetic justice given his stint here.

No one in their right minds would take Wallace for what he was being paid. Having to not release him outright was a coup.
