I like Maybin as much as English. I dont know why people are against him in the 3-4, he seems like hed fit right in. Very similar to English imo.

Definitely a back up for Porter, maybe able to start in 2010.

He's got all the tools and intangibles to be successful.

The Jets taking a HB is pretty bad too.

As far as Maybin goes, I wouldn't mind it at all. He has huge upside. He'd probably start as a situational pass rusher and take over for Porter eventually.

I do agree about English or a corner though, although my top choice is Nicks.

I'm not crazy about it. I want an OLB with our 1st pick, but there are a few whom I would want before Maybin, though I wouldn't be horribly upset with taking him. I've wanted L. English with our 1st for a while now. The Bears taking him doesn't makes sense to me. It says they need help at DE,
..but even though English played DE in college, IMO, he's purely a OLB in the NFL. I believe Chicago runs a 4-3 D. I would think someone like Ayers or Tyson Jackson or even Moore from USC in the later rounds, etc, would serve them better for the D they run.
That doesn't make sense. He's a bit undersized, but he would make a perfect fit in their 4-3 D?? (see my previous statement)

I never heard of L. English being listed at 274..??

Not that I don't think Maybin can play in the 3-4, I am a big fan of his, but what scares people is his size. He bulked up for the combine, but he was playing at like 230 lbs. It remains to be seen how he'll carry the new weight. I think his upside is huge though just like English.

Lots of people bulk up for the combine. Hes a young kid and can stand to fill out a bit more-especially once he starts hitting the weights and all that like parcells and the miami staff will have him doing.
Hes got a great motor and hustle and work ethic, which the staff will love. Hes got some excellent passrush ability right now. His ability to set an edge and play the run are somewhat in question, but it is for alot of college kids making a transition from mostly DE to an OLB spot.
I would love to have Maybin on the team.

To me, Maybin and Johnson are the same player, and I can't see using a #1 pick on Maybin as he is a developmental project.

Not a fan of Larry English at #25...IMO we could do better.

Michael Johnson? IMO he is ready to step in and play, possibly at a high level. Its guaging his dedication and drive that will determine where he ends up and how successful he is.
Maybin I think could have success right away situationally, and could develop very fast. Definately much worse we could do at 25.

Or not Tx, Johnson is interesting to me simply because he has such a high ceiling, but he also could bust out.

That is what makes him similar to Maybin, a high ceiling..."but"...Johnson will probably be gone by #25 though.

So with that in mind, why not take Sintim or DJ Moore or one of the better Cb's and fill a need without the headache?

He is ultra inexperienced and a bit undersized and a Team would have to wait for him to develop meaning the effect of the draft pick is pushed forward a year or two.

Now he does have tons of upside, but he is a luxury for us, a team like the Giants or Steelers could take him and groom him to play as they don't need impact at his position quickly.

Our need at OLB is someone who can create a pass rush, we don't need an every down guy yet.

Maybin is the "quickest" pass rusher in the draft.

And I don't see how you think 6'3" 250ish is undersized, since that is exactly what Porter is.

I also fail to see how anything about what you wrote would give anyone a headache? Everyone knows he is inexperienced with a high ceiling that will likely take 1 or 2 years to really come on. Where does the headache come from?

I think that Michael Johnson needs to add muscle to his frame, despite being 266 lbs. already. He's getting washed out by fullbacks and wide receivers.

He crammed on the weight pre Combine Stitches.

So we draft a guy to play Part time in the first round and maybe two years from now he is a everydown player? And therein lays the headache, he could be Gholston II, if he is, we could have used the pick on a player who could play from Day 1 at Cb or NT or what have you.

And keep in mind, he does not have much of a track record at PSU playing up or down.

Better at the OLB spot? Probably only one guy comes to mind though, Clint Sintim. Why aren't you a fan of his game?

Agree with you there. He certainly has the frame to put on more pounds and not miss a beat defensively, which he should use.

I think English could play defensive end in a 4-3. I also think that Tyson Jackson is not a good fit at defensive end in a 4-3, rather better in a 3-4. If he goes to a 4-3 team, I think we could see him at defensive tackle.

That was the first news that came out regarding his weight. He weighed in at 274 but it was later corrected at 255.

I don't know who you think we could get at #25 to play NT that would play more than a back-up OLB (especially one who has tremendous pass-rush potential in Maybin or English).

That should be his game making him our #25 pick, he was a touch slow and he played at a small college, if we snag him later then great though.

To me, if I were looking for a passrusher at #25

    Sintim, Johnson, Maybin then English..

Put English head to head with Sintim and who would be the better pick?

For me, Sintim..starter at a big time School so he faced better competition, he always produced, and has played LB during that time.

What would make English a better pick Alen?

English's 40 was only .08 secs slower than Sintim, .1 slower than Johnson, and actually .03 faster than Maybin.

English's short shuttle was identical to Maybin, and .01 slower than Johnson.

I also think English could play DE in a 4-3, but I definitely do not think that would be his ideal position in the NFL. I see him purely as an OLB in the NFL and that's where he'll shine and be able to truly show his abilities. JMHO.

.08 is almost a full tenth, and typically guys who run poorly at the Combine aren't #1 picks, Johnson is more a DE at this point in time, his future may be standing up or he could just be a 4-3 De, depends where he lands.

And Maybin is still a young man athletically speaking, if you draft him it is for potential more then Day 1 production.

The same thing happened with Chris Long last year, and he was slightly faster at the Combine, and even then, he did not set the world alight in St Louis last year.

Forty times mean very little when your rushing off the edge. Forget the numbers at the combine Padre, watch him on tape. I've seen multiple games of Larry English and I can tell you that he's one of the quickest players off the edge and can get to the Quarterback. He has good lateral speed, I'm not going to see him running down field 40 yards. If you want to base it off of combine numbers then lets call Terrell Suggs a bad player and a bust right now. He did play at a smaller college but had success.

Didn't you just talk about Maybin being a headache or something? Why put Johnson over English?

I said a post ago that Sintim would probably be the only OLB I would take over Larry English at 25.

I've seen some clips of English, to me the small college competition made it hard to project him.

    1. Maybin is a headache simply because you have to hope he develops, if he doesn't then you've wasted the pick, we don't have that luxury.

    2. Purely because Johnson potential, he's what 6'6 and a lean 266, he could lose weight and play standing up, or gain it and put a hand down and he played against better competition.

To me, the small school makes difference.

Could you see English developing into a Merriman/Ware type of player?

    4.65-4.75.

But that was at the Indy combine, and it seemed all the times were slower this year than years past.

He also showed more at the Combine, if one recalls, it was between Ware or Merriman for the Cowboys, both impressed that much, has anyone gushed over Larry English's performance?

Clips do you no good, man. I'm not trying to be rude to you but you have to watch the game on the guy. Clips show you good stuff, that's why you never use You Tube for example.

    You hope every player develops.

Problem is that he needs to gain more weight. As I stated earlier, in my opinion, he needs to add more muscle despite his 6'6" 266 frame. Watch him on tape, and you see him getting knocked around by stronger LT's - watch him against Ciron Black - and then he gets washed out by wide receivers and full backs in run support. And IMO, he should be standing up.

Small school does make a difference. However, you can't put that up against him if he's proven that he can play well. If we looked at it like that, DeMarcus Ware wouldn't have been a first round draft choice.

Possibly. If he learns to set the edge better.

No,and that is why English isn't viewed as a top #15 pick like Ware and Merriman were.

Merriman ran a 4.6 (unofficially) and Ware ran a 4.65 and finished top 5 in every other drill.

English did not even do as well as Sidbury.

40 time is not the end all, and the RCA dome appears to be faster in all regards than Lucas Oil.

Who cares if Sidbury did better? Is that supposed to be a knock on English, because Sidbury is a guy many people are high on.

I mention Sidbury simply because between the two, English receives much more attention as a good prospect, yet Sidbury could be just as good only he is never discussed.

Well, I made my case as well as I could Stitches, and the great thing is that in about a month, the debate ends one or another, if we take English or Maybin or whomever, that's fine with me.
