"White guy" absolutely is not trademarkable. Further, "white guy" is not even a word. It is the combination of two words, so you're essentially creating a phrase.

However, there absolutely is an analogous example here; "Whitey". Surely nobody here actually thinks that a team named the Whiteys, with a Caucasian head as a logo would pass any challenges against its trademark.

Forget it man, I have explained what my problem with Reid is more than once. Just call me a bigot like everyone else and be done with it.

Reid is probably a dick, he is a politician, however I don't see a connection between yesterday's ruling and Reid. Especially since it is the same ruling as 1999.

Again, do you have any problems with "chink", "slope" or anything like that?

The man responsible for that name, George Preston Marshall was an avowed, unapologetic racist. He had to be forced to desegregate his team more than a decade after the rest of the league did by the Federal government.

What exactly about the motives of the man suggests he deserves the benefit of the doubt on the issue? Especially considering he admitted it wasn't about "respect"?

Well, he's a rich, white, business owner and shula guy is a conservative, so that's all it takes really. Let's not forget this guy defended the rich, white, business owner Clive Bundy and the rich, white, business owner Donald Sterling. At this point, Donald Trump could change his name to Donald Killallmexicans and shula would defend him.

Yeah sure. We could also have a team called the Detroit Blackskins, and a team called the San Francisco Yellowskins and it would not matter at all. If someone said it was offensive, we could just say they were misinterpreting it.

The Native American's were also referred to as Godless Savages back in the day. Maybe we could change the name of the Washington franchise to that. Surely that is not a racial slur either and if any are offended, it is just their hangup.

That is pretty much how a word becomes offensive.

That is generally how words come to exist with meaning.

When they take the Confederate Battle Flag out of ALL of the state flags and tear down Nathan Bedford Forrest High School, I'll weep for the Native Americans.

It's not something that is really up for debate.

Etymologically, the word is a slur. It has a long and detailed history of being used as a slur. You will not find a dictionary with a modern edition that does not note this in one way or another.

Legally, the word has been found to be a slur multiple times. The US Patent Office has made this decision multiple times(and has not been overturn by the Court of Appeals), and likewise the term has been found to be harassing in nature in discrimination cases.

Socially, it is not a neutral term used to describe the actual Native Americans that Redskins iconography associates them with. The USPTO court case testimony had both the plaintiff and respondents linguistic experts note that their research showed virtually no uses of the term "Redskin" to refer a group of people other than sports teams in print databases.

It's America.....every now and then a group of people will realize that they have grounds to make waves and as a result will make that wave. Yes....it's a legitimate gripe....and hell just change the name. While nobody uses Redskin maliciously really. If anything they'll likely call you Tonto, Chief, or Hiawatha first....it's still all legit. So.....as is normal in America....we like to maintain harmony. In order to do that, we must grant the Native Americans their wishes. The Redskins will change their name eventually, the Native American people will have their victory for NA rights and in 20-30 years no one will remember the name change. When the WWF first changed it's name to WWE......it was a stark injustice...now its an afterthought. This too shall pass. And I hope it passes quick because home depot has a wood shortage from the amount of soap boxes being built.

Wasn't a soap box. People on a soap box usually have some sort of point to convey or message to deliver. I merely provided a brief generalization of how the process will play out. I have no side to sway you to or no sensitivity to appeal to. Using this metaphor, I'm more likely the person in the crowd that wishes you would break it up because my baby is sleeping inside and you are all burning your bras about nothing.......as usual.

Dude, that is a soap box.

With that metaphor, that person is still on a soapbox complaining about complaining about nothing.

I am now saying I would rather be in a room with a racist feminist atheist vegan, than a person who complains about people complaining about nothing.

There is no argument. You are on a soapbox. On a soapbox with no point and nothing to add.

I actually don't believe it's the correct thing. I don't think Snyder should have to take the hit for a team that was named before he was the owner or have to be the victim of the economic fallout as a result. But he's the owner and we already know how this is going to go down. He's going to have to change the name eventually regardless of how I feel the world should be. My post was just a statement about how this will play out and why I am ambivalent to the situation because I know I'm in the minority on the issue and the court of public opinion has already cast a verdict. That's it...nothing more. If you have a problem with that...you....Dupree...I really don't care. I stated my opinion just like everyone else here has a right to state theirs. It's really tiresome to have to get into these overblown arguments every week. It's why I try and keep my mouth shut. But its a sad state when you are reluctant to have discussion on a discussion forum. Anyway....I know what to do in this situation so don't worry about it.

First of all, it's asinine and sycophantic- He should have known that it was a possibility when he bought the team. If he did not, he's an idiot.

Secondly, why do you believe he will take a financial hit? Do you believe that Stephen Ross took a hit when the Dolphins logos were redone this year?

No chance Snyder loses any money because of this. What exactly will cost him? There is/has been more than ample time for him to transition without any type of negative financial effect.

I think it depends. So let's say the Redskins do what the wizards did and pick the stupidest name or like the Pelicans. Redskins are one of the more popular franchises and top jersey sellers. If they don't get on base with a good name and become the Washington Ardvarks....I think there could be a loss. There is also a cost that comes with rebranding I would think. While it won't cause Snyder to take a loss, its still an added cost.

What do think of changing it to Capitol instead of Washington when the name change happens?

If that's the realistic cost to Snyder for re-branding the team, the sympathy for him is even more asinine.

they may lose money initially for rebranding, but they will more than compensate for it if the team is even decently good and everyone goes out and buys the new merchandise with the new name and logo. I'm betting they come out far ahead in the end. This isn't the New Orleans pelicans franchise, this is one of the best franchises in all of pro-sports with a very strong fan base.
