Eh, really it is quite simple, the running game went from #4 to #22 in the NFL, if it is not fixed the offense will be poor once again.

We have been the worst team, statistically, at blocking at the second level.

 

A dominant oline with Pouncey, Jerry, Carey and Long is not a bad thing at all. The one thing that has always been consistent with winning teams is they win the battles in the trenches. It is what dictates every play for every game.

If you have a good oline, it can buy your playmakers more time. With more time anyone can make plays in the NFL.

I like the pick, but that could just be me. Not sure if that's the justification you were looking for but that's how i see it.

 

A lack of speed has an effect, add in Henne was one of the worst at completing passes down the field and the offensive woes are no mystery.

 

think of the offensive line like the foundation of a house. If you don't have a foundation, or worse, you have a S****y one, your house is going to fall apart or never get built.

 

there WILL be FA .... to help with RBs, outside of picking one up in the mid rounds either late today - but more likely early tomorrow.

sorry, but Pouncey was really an easy call to make for this regime -- it fit a need, was the best at either G or C, and was a safe pick. he will come in an perform from day 1.

i just laugh every time i read we'll get the #1 pick next year .... gheeeesh ... get a grip. we will not be any worse than we were last year .... for sure.

 

I'm only upset with the pick if Ireland and company believed that any of the QBs left were an upgrade over Henne. Otherwise, you can't be too angry at the pick. If there was no franchise QB to be had, the best you can do to improve your offense is to try and build a dominant offensive line.

 

I am sorry but did you see in Jerry that makes you think he is going to be on the team this year much less starting and much less dominant? I mean I like the Pouncey pick but Jerry sucks butt!

Yeah, JJ was terrible in 2010, have to give them some time though as Carey was terrible as a Rook as well but turned it around.

 

Eh, I think they view Running Backs as easily acquired but Olineman difficult to acquire, so they go OL first, then find their Rb second.

What's the point in getting a RB that will only be running into the backside of our OL since they get no push and create no holes?

We need to fix the interior of the OL or our season is over before we even start. Just look at our division, all 3 teams have good/great DL's. Buffalo has potentially one of the best DT pairings in the league with Kyle Williams and Marcell Dareus. If we can't run and can't keep guys out of our QB's face then what's the point in picking skill players?

If you win the battle in the trenches more often than not you will win the game.

 

Which is a mistake imho, and creates opportunities for teams that move contra to that theory.

 

I'm happy with the pick...... as of now Henne is still the starting QB because they didn't value any of the QB's there higher. Deal.
As for running back we can still get one and not have to reach. No need to get one at #15 when you can bolster the OL which is a huge.
Fans are so impatient that they lose track of the process.

Eh, Ingram or Leshoure, but I don't think either is a HoF running back however in yrs past they would have mid rd #1 picks.

As teams move more to passing offenses, and defenses adjust by going smaller and quicker to cover them the team that can run the ball with power have a huge advantage.

How many first rounders have the pats spent on skill players? Yea...

These teams don't draft skill players in 1st round outside of QB..which is a 1st round position. WR, RB, and TE are not first round positions IMO.

Now all these teams have a QB so that point is moot. But all those teams had QBs fall in their lap. Brady to 6th. Big Ben dropped in the draft to 11..and Rodgers dropped all the way to the 20s to the Packers. No QB dropped to 15 so we went with the most important position on offense after QB. It's simply smart.

It's a point I've always said and don't understand how people don't understand it. You don't take someone just to take the position.

You don't draft Mallet at 15 just to take a QB. Obviously they don't feel like he's that great or they would have taken him...

Not that this FO has shown the ability to evaluate QBs. But their the ones getting paid to turn this thing around.

i dont feel like looking up anymore but this list can get a lot bigger im sure. These guys just come from out of no where all the time. It truly is the one position that just isnt dictated by draft value.

 

Ingram maybe, I highly doubt Leshoure would be. This wasn't exactly a strong draft.

 

Ingram is going to look like an absolute stud running behind that Saints line this year. If Chris Ivory and Pierre Thomas look pretty good behind it I expect Ingram to look special. Wouldn't surprise me to see him end up ROTY.

People are mentioning Reggie Bush leaving NOLA but P Thomas could be leaving as well.

 

P Thomas has been injury prone.

 

He had an ankle problem that he played on and it grew worse, now he is supposedly 100% healthy.

I also think it should be noted that running backs in traditional sets bring a far different dynamic to the table then running backs who basically run the ball out of the spread, defenses play those formations differently.

 

I'm OK with the pick, it's the safe predictable pick most expected from this regime. What's more troubling to me I guess is the fact that this regime in its fourth draft is still trying to 'build the foundation'. You would have hoped at this point you could be in a position to use the first round pick on an impact skill position player.

I must have missed the part where Jerry was terrible. I mean, he wasn't great or anything, but he was thrown into a beat up offensive line as a rookie. Carey was awful, but I think if he gets his *** in shape, then he will be back to normal and Jerry will only get better. I'm not worried about guard or tackle right now. I am, however, worried about Center. Hopefully Incognito can step up.

At least its safe to say, we should have a group of maulers on the line. Should open up the run game some.

 

Dave Wanndstedt, Nick Saban, and Cam Cameron were HORRIBLE. Cameron pissed away our #9 on Tedd Ginn. Saban pissed away a pick on Allen? Saban passed on Drew Brees and went with Dante Culpepper. Dude, HORRIBLE regimes.

Agreed, with four years to rebuild the OL and Sparano being an OL guy, is there any excuse for not having a good-great OL this year? Especially with the HUGE investment of picks?

I won't write off Henne until we see what he can do with a good OL giving him a rushing attack and more time to pass.

Where we go from here I have no clue. I was really hoping we'd jump in for Mark Ingram later on like NO did. I'd love to move up for Leshure or Williams if the cost isn't too steep.

IMO Ingram would not have been a bad pick, however I think Ingram is as safe and boring as Pouncy. Ingram is not the Peterson, Chris Johnson, exciting runningback. He is the perfect 3 yards and a cloud of dust runningback. However with Ingram coming to Miami, he would have to create most of his running on the edges because Miami does not have a great inside run blocking offensive line. I do not see Ingram as a great outside the tackles runningback. Pouncey helps Miami overall more in that regard.

As far as the passing attack
I do not think Miami is in as sad of a shape where it will take years to become a threat. I believe that injuries to a weak interior line last season, coupled by Jerry's sickness, really hurt Miami overall. It is my opinion that Miami does not have a late season collapse if they didn't have a patchwork offensive line. Henne is no Rogers and cannot overcome a hurt offensive line.

I am down on Henne, however the book isn't finished on him yet. If he does take a next step next year Miami's offense will be much better. With Pouncey getting some downfield blocking, then that could only help Miami break some big runs.

It is not like Miami drafted Pouncey instead of Adrian Peterson or Julius Jones. There really wasn't a ton of talent at 15 available next season that could help Miami's offense as much as Pouncey.

I am not super excited about the pick. I really wanted to trade down. However I am not upset about the pick. It makes perfect sense. It will make Miami a better football team. Miami has more draft picks.
