What do we do with him? Leave him on the PUP? Activate him and cut someone else? Who would we cut?
And what role will he play if he is activated for the Saints game?
JT looks great on the Strongside so I can't really see Roth moving JT off of that role, Wake is a much better passrushing DE, so where would he play?

I think they would ease him back in on the strong side, wouldn't they? I would also hope that both JT and Joey would welcome a deeper rotation since it's going to help keep everyone's legs fresh.
Fresh legs will give us dominance in the 4th qtr -
Well, I'm not sure that JT has come out of the games very much as it is, that is what makes this a thorny question, I could see if JP's hamstring injury lingers they activate Roth and have him play the strong side and move JT over to the weak side to cover for JP while he is out.
But JP rarely misses games, and Roth doesn't play Special Teams. -
provided Roth is 100%, would rather have Roth and Wake start, with JT coming off the bench ... Wake can provide anything JP brings to the table ...

Who says Roth will even be ready? Have not heard ANYTHING about his progress at all. If he is healthy and 100% he dresses..Period. For some reason though..I have a feeling Roth will not be ready and not play a single down for us this year. I hope I am wrong.

Disagree with that, JP was just getting started against the Chargers, he had a sack and fumble when his hammy flaired up on him.
Wake is a nickel pass rushing DE right now not really a starting OLB, but that just illustrates the problems that Roth brings to the table for us, to me a trade would be ideal, but those rarely happen. -

I really don't know what they will do with him, 4 OLB's all probably could be NFL quality starters, but with different skill sets and strengths.

In all seriousness, he should get immediate rotation into the lineup to help keep both JT and JP fresh. Roth can take JT's spot, while JT can rotate for Porter ... then Porter can come in for JT while Matt stays in the game, etc.
Wake and Anderson should continue to see some work on pass rushing situations.

Not seeing it VO, Sparano taking JT off the field for Roth on running downs? What would be the advantage for us?
As good as Wake looked is as bad as Anderson looked trying to rush the passer against Buffalo, to me the term "velcro'd to blocks" comes to mind.
Activate Roth and Q Moses is more than likely the player who is cut to make room for him VO, Walden and Anderson are better at special teams and JT and Roth means he would play even more sparingly. -
I don't know ... you need good footwork and instincts to play MLB, especially in the 3-4, where you have to be quick enough to avoid lineman. You also want to be able to step over trash and make plays.
I always think of Roth as bit like a lumbering dinosaur ... slow and not swift footed. I think you'd be surprised how awful he looks in the middle. I could see him being consistently late (even later than Crowder late) to make plays.
Not to mention you're talking about his second position change in as many years ... we could as Jason Allen how well that's worked out for his career. -
i think JT and JPs contributions are overrated ... as much as i was hoping we could replace Roth in the offseason, he is the best SOLB we have ...
last week JT was happy to be back at his old position ... maybe he and JP could swap out on the weak side, and let Roth and Wake swap on the strong side -- this is what i would advocate ... but JT and JP are better not used as SOLB & WOLB together ... we have to this point, because he don't have a better option.
still believe that JP doesn't offer much more than what Wake can bring to the table, especially by the end of the season. -
We are #2 against the run in the NFL.
That is a part of thinking ahead, JT to me has played fine as the strongside OLB, 9 tackles, 1 pd 3 sacks, and teams rarely have tried to run the ball on us so far this season that sort of reduces Roth's value to us..at the moment.
Scheme to have JP, JT and Wake on the field at one time is bad enough, throw Roth into the mix and things become even more murky.
Wake is a nickel rushing DE, Porter is a everydown starter at WOLB, Wake just is not ready to be an everydown OLB, and Porter is far from done. -

The advantage is keeping Joey Porter (32) and Jason Taylor (35) fresh down the stretch ... we know Sparano is a big play count guy (he states that's why Ginn was held out in the second half on Sunday), and we also know that both Porter and Taylor are jealous of how fresh the younger players are. (Heck, I think you may have brought that point up, regarding knee cartilage.)
Well, we are going to need more bodies to throw at the passer, especially if Porter and Taylor do wear down.
I don' t know where Roth would land on this roster, honestly. I'd add Jason Allen as the name to the mix in regards to Special Teams. I agree on your assessment but we part ways when it comes to Anderson - for me his negative plays have outweighed the bad.padre31 likes this. -

A) Sparano was telling a fib about Ted Ginn.
B) Skill sets, JT and JP even in their dottages offer more than Roth does in his youth, Roth is simply an edge setting OLB, he does not pass rush with any particular skill, so rotating him into the game would only involve removing JT, who is still learning the SOLB position by his own admission, and no way Roth subs for Porter.
We are only 4 games into the season, they still should be fresh, heck they should still be peaked from the brutal training camp workouts, and what they do with JP is anyone's guess, if he missed the Bills game, chances are good that his hammy is tweaked more then they are letting on.
But the kicker to that is, he will/should be 100% when Roth is eligible to come off of the PUP before the Saints game, if we could have used Roth, the time would have been Right Now to use him.
To me he either stays on PUP for the rest of the year, which is possible, or we activate him, cut Q Moses, and rotate him into games as you suggest to get him into game shape.
This stretch of 4 games is basically the season, I'd have to say head to head, I'd prefer to have Roth over Q Moses for that period of time, I really like Q, but Roth has shown what he can do as a OLB.
Unless Roth has just angered Sparano so much that he leaves him in limbo on the PUP, this is a new situation with Sparano so it really is anybody's guess. -
the issue with Roth is that we haven't seen him on the field since last year ... this was supposed to be his year to show what he could do as a SOLB healthy, and at a lesser weight ... IF he is improved from last year, especially as a pash rusher or in space -- then he needs to be the starting SOLB; even at the expense of JT.
WRT JP, he, just like JT is not stout against the run ... which is why i don't view starting Wake as much of a downgrade. Regardless, i am all for putting JP/JT on the weak side and Roth/Wake on the strong side.
Just not sure either of these 2 will be on the team next year ... a healthy, improved Roth, an experienced, improved Wake, and a couple draft picks will render them as accessories. -

Roth had a total of 53 tackles last season, JT already has 9, and three sacks, Roth went half a season in between sacks, JT is doing a fine job on the strongside.
JT's performance is comparable to players such as Vrabel and his weakness has not been run defense, it has been passrushing, until last week.
Actually prior to his hamstring injury Porter was the #3 rated OLB/De in the entire NFL.
That is next year, worry about that when it arrives. -
Taylor hasn't played bad vs. the run, but Matt Roth is better, and you can do different things with him. You can have him covered by blockers, you can treat him almost like another big down-linemen.

True, but the concept of "running down" is not really how the NFL works anymore Disgustipate, if JT is comparable to Roth as a run stuffer, but offers more of a passrush, why give up that passrush just to play Roth?
I'm actually curious about how that would upgrade the Defense? -
Any chance we could start Roth, move Porter inside and move Crowder to free safety? Is Channing to slow?

On defense rotation is everything. Having strong backups that can come into the game without missing a beat is just as important as having solid starters. At the end of the game when the linebackers are still fresh it will be just that much easier to stop the other team on that crucial third down and three.

we aren't saying JT is as good as Roth against the run are we ... if so, let's go back and review his entire history with this team. teams actually chose to run at JT (as a DE), and usually got good yardage against him. agreed that there is only a small sampling to view with JT as an OLB ... but no matter, run stuffing is not his game.
Padre, usually agree with you, but with this set of LBs ... not so much. -
I hope JT and JP show their worth this year and are back next year also. I think they've both gotten better and strong as tc and the games go on.

Yeah I heard about that. I think he should hang it up. He can't keep risking it with all those concussions. I think we should sign him though so he can at least retire in Miami.dolphindebby likes this.

Yeah, I heard that as well. He's filed a grievance against Kansas City ... basically claiming he got injured on their watch and they released him.

That was early in JT's career, he did eventually become quite good at stuffing the run from his DE position. Which is not here nor there, we are #2 against the Run in the NFL with JT playing essentially every down.
How you can argue with #2 defense against the run in the NFL?
Agreeing with me is not neccessary Phinanalyst, I "know" Dolphins Fans see Cam Wake with the 3 sacks and living in the backfield and their eyes get wide with "love" for Wake, which is great, but I've studied Wake, he is not ready to be a starting OLB for us, right now he is a nickel passrushing DE and he will do that job well even with the double teams he will see.
Joey Porter on the other hand, has proven he can get it done at a high level in the NFL, at OLB, and playing either DE or OLB.
Wake ain't 'there" yet, and JT offers more right now production than Roth possibly can, I'd ask you to keep in mind that Roth is not in game shape yet..dolphindebby likes this. -
