I think Ireland is a guy that's in a position that's one spot above where he deserves to be. I think his true talent is in finding the acorns, and I think he needs another voice in the discussion to push him out of making the safe pick. He's mediocre in the job he's in, and our record pretty much reflects that.

 

Can only be Negative/Neutral until they make the playoffs. Although if they had went 9-7 this year, which would've missed, I'd have been pleased. But even that next year won't cut it. Seeing the former last place Vikings take down the mighty Packers in a must win game is just one more reason Dolphins fans will have no excuses if the team misses out again next season. If they can do it, we better.

If the Dolphins aren't in the playoffs at this time next year, he better be the first one gone on Black Monday 2013.

He may be the only GM with 4 straight losing seasons that's been retained.

 

I voted negative. Simply put, the team is not as talented as it needs to be to win games. That's borne out in our record the past four seasons. I think this offseason he's set himself up to have an "arrow up" swing, to borrow from one of his own terms, but I don't have much confidence in him based on his past experiences. Hopefully things have changed more than I think they have.

 

My opinion of Jeff Ireland is that so far he's been consistently mediocre. He does adequately as a drafter and very well in trades imo but hes not great in FA. He consistently gets first downs (adequate players) in the draft which is obviously better then incomplete passes (busts) but fails to get touchdowns (great players). Dont know what happened to the guy who drafted DeMarcus Ware but thats the guy we need. He also shows a propensity for doing much better on picking defensive players than he does on offense whether its in FA or draft selections.

Ive not been a big Jeff Ireland fan the last 2 years but Im hoping he has a killer offseason cause this is going to shape us for the next few years with the contracts he gives out and the picks he makes.

But now that we know he is coming back, I will support him and hope he proves me wrong.
He's got no excuses this offseason. Plenty of picks and plenty of money.

 

Neutral - Because Chad Henne was a tease that we banked on that failed.

Replace Chad Henne with a capable QB and this team may have been decent after Pennington went down. Can't lay all that blame on Ireland after what Henne showed in 2009;

 

Slightly Negative as of right now. Willing to see what he can do this offseason to better the team and my opinion of him. He has set himself up to potentially change his image in many people's eyes if he is successful. However i must say my confidence in him being able to indeed be successful and change his image is very low at the moment.

 

I lean negative, but not overly so. Part of the reason for that is because I know we could not have gotten anyone better. BUT we have had for losing seasons in row, culminating in a 28-0 loss. The product is NOT improved in a measurable way (besides some accolades like pro bowl alternates). Hard to put a positive spin on a lack of results.

Jeff has been average on the draft, better on the defensive side of the ball imo. His late round drafting drives me nuts, and suggests a guy who thinks he is far more intelligent than everyone else (I'll take a vet student with a high vertical!). If he had done obvious things like take Rod Streeter in the 7th, that guy would have been our #1 receiver. What really soured it for me was the Tony Sparano firing. I think he was a poor coach, but needlessly dragged though the mud by Ross and Ireland.

Free agency has been his weakness. Despite oodles of dollars, multiple draft picks, and lots of tinkering, the offensive line is only modestly improved. He also seems to needlessly make holes in favor of cap room. Trading Vontae Davis, regardless of what you think about him as a player, left a vacant spot in the secondary that was not adequately filled. The Brandon Marshall trade clearly did not return value, and was not patched up afterwards. The tight end position has been all but ignored until just recently (and then, poorly). We are paying a lot of dead cap this year. All these sorts of things seem like GM 101, and he consistently gets them wrong.

Now if we let Jake Long just walk without compensation, I'll go from Defcon 3 to Defcon 1.

My impression of Jeff is the same as Sparano. He was brought here as a Parcells Yes Man and is not an independent thinker. We'd be better off with a man with his own philosophy, rather than a pale shadow of Bill Parcells.

 

IMO nothing he has done should make anyone trust he is the answer at GM and that he is entrusted with decision making this significant off season. If one has to make the call from what they know , what they sense , I make the decision to remove him from the GM position. Mediocrity doesn't work for me at least. Rather we make a move to someone that may make us a constant playoff team than stay with Ireland because of blind faith.

 

He screws this up we're done , you trust him ? I don't.

 

I voted negative. But my impression is really more neutral while leaning negative. That's because while I think overall he has been about average he has done some good things recently that have made me shift the scale. The main thing being Ryan Tannehill, who I fairly impressed with. Even with the potential there, it's hard to overlook the secondary, the lack of pass rush, the running game, the shaky pocket, and the Brandon Marshall thing. Other GMs can get away with some of those things if their QB situation is settled. So I guess it's up to Tanny to save Ireland.

Done in what sense? There are a lot of possible scenarios where this offseason isn't a success, but there isn't anything done that seriously harms the team's future.

Judging from the sentiment here, the moves that could potentially harm the team long-term are ones that generally Ireland avoids, and fans are demanding at this point?

That can all change though if he hits big in the upcoming offseason.

 

Negative. A hanger on from a failed regime. He's done nothing to prove he won't continue the same failures of said regime. He should have went with Sparano. Why he has been allowed to rebuild his own mess is beyond me. Another failed season and he gets yet another chance, and somehow still has some fan support. I'm not sure what it will take for fans to finally lose faith in him, but we will find out this season.

 

Neutral. Not 100% sold on Tannehill. I am sold on the coaching staff however.

 

Not sure I do. Are you referring to Bill Belichick as New England's GM? Or Nick Caserio? Are you counting Mike Tannenbaum who's been fired? Or Buddy Nix who is rumored to be soon to be fired?

And what exactly would make Ireland better than Buddy Nix or Mike Tannenbaum, anyway?

Better decisions at QB, better finances. I mean seriously, could you imagine if we re-signed Henne to the contract the Jets gave Sanchez? Could you imagine going into next season owing Chad Henne ~$8M??? The Bills are in a better position than the Jets - they can pretty much get out of Fitzpatrick's awful contract. But they've pretty much handicapped themselves going forward because of Mario Williams' contract.

 

No, there are other things. Certainly missing on Tannehill would. The coaching staff not panning out as well. He could also give out a bunch of big money in FA, which would turn my opinion of him to negative.

He's already done those other things. One coaching staff failed, and he gave big money to Marshall and Dansby.

 

Tannehill will never not pan out in the eyes of fans here unless he were to be let go. Just like Henne. Regardless of his performance, he will be defended. Let's hope he plays well enough to earn the support unlike other QBs past.

 

I agree. It'll be worse than with Henne due to where Tannehill was drafted and the expectations that come along with that slot.
