I was wanting to know if you could spend under a 1000.00 what kind and model would be a good one for surfing the internet? My wife is on more, and we only have one computer at home. I am not a fan of HP or Compaq. I greatly appreciate your help. I was wondering what anybody thought about the ones at Costco? I appreciate the very knowledgeable family here, as this is not my expertise.

If all you want to do is surf the internet yes it is very, very possible. We have a laptop (and by we I mean everyone who lives here that isn't me) that has 3G of RAM and a pretty big hard drive. it was like 600/700. It's a dell, which I absolutely despise, but it works like a charm.

    edit:

The only computer I have ever bought is a Gateway so my loyalty lies with them. The only other gateway I saw from there was like a 13 inch screen. So I picked the 16''. This has 3G of ram and 300 some G hard drive.. way more than enough to surf the web

I can't recommend a laptop to be used strictly for websurfing, but that site always has great deals on laptops. I am sure you could find a great one for under $1k.

    I would recommend:

    and

    http://www.costco.com/Browse/Produc...ang=en-US&Sp=C&ec=BC-EC10590-Cat56670&topnav=

for the most bang for your buck if you only shop at Costco. You can find a lot more selections at a Best Buy (if you want to shop at a brick and mortar store) or online. One of the more common brands I've had to fix at the UCLA Store were Toshiba and HP. Pretty much one out of every 4 were those brands. If you steer clear of those, you'll be able to find a good laptop. I would highly recommend Sony, Dell, Lenovo, or Apple (if you can find an affordable one).

I bought one recently, added a little extra ram and it came to about 1050 -

the slightly older version of this one:

    http://www.pcconnection.com/IPA/Shop/Product/Detail.htm?sku=8916136

It won't win any awards but it's solid and most important is that it's XP Pro - not that horrible vista crud and it's a business model laptop, not a consumer model so it doesn't come pre-loaded with all kinds of crap you don't need.

I have a good guy that you can call, he's a vendor that I deal with quite a bit - drop me a PM if you want his info.

***sorry missed the dislike of HP, but just the same he can give you good info ***

Any recommendations at Best Buy bro? I know less then a 1000.00 seems like a real small amount, but I still don't have a job, so that is why I asked for help here. I appreciate the help from everyone.

The main specs each of em have (Core 2 Duo, 4GB RAM, 250-320GB) ought to be standard for that price range of <$1000. It's actually a good time to get a laptop under $1000 right now. That top Sony one with BD for under $1k is a really good deal.

I could get 2 good laptops for $1000 if you only wanted to web surf. I just bought a pretty good Dell that is comparable to the 2nd post in this thread for less than $600.

You could get an iPhone and surf the web for $200 ;)

Thanks bro. My wife and I were thinking about using here at home and when we are camping. She does a lot of typing for her friends on facebook, and I would use it occasionally.

Thanks a lot brother. I really do appreciate your help. This will be helpful when I sit down with the misses to discuss. She will probably like the last one because it comes in pink, for her.

Thanks to all the family for your time and help! I am not big on computer knowledge, even though my big butt is on one all day. Brother Celtkin helped me with my last home purchase, but he is busy right now and I didn't want to bother him. I just want to make sure if we do this we get the best bang for our buck. :wink2: We have ATT at home, any recommendations for providers if and when we get a laptop?

The first rule of technology is that something you recommend or buy more than 3 months ago is already obsolete if you recommend or buy the same thing right now.
