Just guessing the Dolphins must be right around 20 million under the cap now?
Does anyone know just how much of that can actually be rolled over to next year??
Looks like some better decisions could have been made last March.
Andy Levitre would look awful good right now.
I would like to at least see the Dolphins sign a veteran safety for depth, and the depth on the OL is dismal IMO.
Soliai?

Cry me a river.
That ship has sailed. Free agency is over. The top players we needed who might have signed with us are now under contract to someone else. All we can do is learn from the experience and go aggressively into free agency next year also, unless another team wants to dump someone's contract and trades with us.
YO , PEEPS here is what the front office should do .
#1 put a dome on the stadium and rename the stadium Channing Crowder Stadium :pointlol:
#2 HIRE more cheerleaders , throw a big beer bash and have female mud wrestling .
#3 bring in Terrell Owens and bring back Eddie Moore
#4 put a hit out on the NFL commissioner Goodell .
I don't think Stringer was being a smart *** at all. Everything he wrote is true.

yes, but in a string type of way, I think he was given what wasn't expected so to speak.

Whores!
I was serious. Those things are top priorities for the team. Their financial condition isn't good for an NFL franchise. Its no coincidence that the team has consistently stayed well under the cap since Ross took over.
That's not to say that the team wouldn't spend more money. But they're not going to spend simply because they have available cap space. They're going to spend on players that will add more value to the franchise than an overpaid guard or an overpaid TE that's on waivers.

Sign me to become a water boy. I'll make sure they get the Gatorade made with water from the Fountain of Youth.
Nothing?
Let it roll over into 2014 when we have Mike Wallace's huge cap number to deal with.

i was wondering about that too, after i posted this, i wrote that guy an email and asked
I think you're forgetting about the rollover money from last year though.
Mach is involved at that site man... that info is more than likely correct. If I have any salary cap questions or CBA related questions, he'd be the first person I'd go to.

See who plays the best and resign them, let the rest walk.
With Keller down that leaves Grimes and Clabo as 2 good possibilities for being resigned, maybe Clemons and Odrick as well.

Exactly what I was going to say Padre.
Save the $... if Grimes stays healthy and keeps up the play, sign the man to a longer contract! He is my first priority.

This site shows us around $20M also....?? Numbers are a bit different, so don't know who, if either are right.....
At any rate, I still would look to potentially lock a few guys up... and then roll the rest over...

There was some significant discussion about this back in the late spring.
It appears they will roll this over to next year and they will need to because several contracts will garner larger cap hits. However, I think they will still have some money to spend. Any use of the cap funds will have to be next year.
Def. agree with Grimes and Clabo. We need solidity at some of these positions.
I'd focus on the OL next year again. We'll see what happens this year but I think that the patchwork business is not a great way to go. If they don't rise up and perform then that has to be looked at and work done there.
I really like how the D is shaping up for the future (though if Starks walks, which almost certain, then DT will be a need in the draft). But, OL, TE and FB/HB are positions I'd go after with free money. I'd also look at another WR (both in the draft and free agency for all those positions).
Misi? No? Legal problems lingering.
Clabo has all but admitted that he has now begun to decline, but he is still pretty good.
Clemons needs to continue to get better in order to get a big deal IMO.
Observing Dallas Thomas this preseason has me second guessing letting Incognito walk. Samuda hasn't impressed either.
I believe our rollover # from 2012 was $5.3m. That must be how they get to the $21m in cap room or whatever they have. $97.9m (including Keller in the top 51), plus $9m in dead cap hit, lets call that $107m... 2013 NFL cap was at what $122m? That's $15m in room plus the $5.3m rollover... eh, I guess that's close enough. Seems right then. Tell Mach he should have all the information on one page to avoid confusion, subtotals and then a nice grand total down the bottom. Incomplete information leads to mistakes! :shifty:
I'll go ahead and give you my predicted response from him.

VanDolPhan, Paul 13 and Boik14 like this.
Why should we lock up Grimes right now? He purposely took a 1 year deal so he could get big money next year so I don't think he'd sign one now anyway. Plus he'll be 31 before the next season starts and we're not a 100% sure he'll hold up the whole season yet.
To be fair those are all conditions of owning a major pro sports franchise. You know its going to involve stadium issues at some point. You know there could be huge debt between payroll, stadium, tickets, paying non playing employees of the team etc. That has absolutely nothing to do with how the team should be spending money vs the cap. If you can afford to meet the 90% cap floor (or whatever percentage it is..I think its 90...)you can afford to deal with all the other stuff you mentioned. The OP is correct...someone like Levitre would look good in a Phins uni now.
Yep. This is the Eagles and Patriots model that allowed them to have sustained success.
A-rod is that you? You working for Biogenosis now? :tongue2:
Providing they stay healthy, give Grimes and Clabo multiyear deals. I think if Odrick has a good year, Starks will go elsewhere next season and Soliai will be extended.
Areas of need will be T/G (most likely addressed in the draft), S (time to draft another young ballhawk), TE (depending on how Sims does, we might want to pick up a free agent), DT (draft Starks' replacement), LB (draft depth).
Agree on OL and S. I think we need a TE regardless of how Sims does. I don't think there's much in the draft at TE though. I like Randall so I'm not sure that we need to draft Stark's replacement. Agree on LB depth. I also think we'll look for a slot WR in the Austin mold.
I would tend to trust Spotrac's numbers the way they've laid it all out. The over the cap numbers are not really laid out well.
According to Spotract the Dolphins have $21,600,356 to roll over next year.
They have $109,050,524 in obligations for 2014 (I adjusted it to eliminate the salary of Rob McCabe who has already been cut but Spotrac hasn't caught it yet). Salary cap growth in 2014 is expected to be flat so I would assume a $123,000,000 start before being adjusted with rollover from 2013.
That $109,050,524 figure could be subject to the following reductions should the Dolphins choose to terminate the contracts of the following players in 2014:
1. CB Dimitri Patterson: $5,400,000 ($5,300,000 base salary + $100,000 workout bonus - $0 guaranteed acceleration)
2. QB Matt Moore: $4,000,000 ($4,000,000 base salary + $0 workout bonus - $0 guaranteed acceleration)
3. DT Vaughn Martin: $1,950,000 ($2,200,000 base salary + $0 workout bonus - $250,000 guaranteed acceleration)
4. OG Nate Garner: $1,625,000 ($1,600,000 base salary + $25,000 workout bonus - $0 guaranteed acceleration)
5. LB Jason Trusnik: $738,333 ($855,000 base salary + $50,000 workout bonus - $166,667 guaranteed acceleration)
6. S Jimmy Wilson: $645,000 ($645,000 base salary + $0 workout bonus - $0 guaranteed acceleration)
Total: $14,358,000
The figure could also be subject to the following adjustments in 2014 based on players I do not expect to make the roster even in 2013:
1. LB Lee Robinson: $585,000 ($570,000 base salary + $15,000 workout bonus - $0 guaranteed acceleration)
2. WR Marvin McNutt: $570,000 ($570,000 base salary + $0 workout bonus - $0 guaranteed acceleration)
3. TE Kyle Miller: $570,000 ($570,000 base salary + $0 workout bonus - $0 guaranteed acceleration)
4. CB DeAndre Presley: $570,000 ($570,000 base salary + $0 workout bonus - $0 guaranteed acceleration)
5. S Don Jones: $460,578 ($495,000 base salary + $0 workout bonus - $34,422 guaranteed acceleration)
6. OT Jeff Adams: $495,000 ($495,000 base salary + $0 workout bonus - $0 guaranteed acceleration)
7. OT Andrew McDonald: $495,000 ($495,000 base salary + $0 workout bonus - $0 guaranteed acceleration)
8. DT Tracy Robertson: $495,000 ($495,000 base salary + $0 workout bonus - $0 guaranteed acceleration)
9. WR Brian Tyms: $495,000 ($495,000 base salary + $0 workout bonus - $0 guaranteed acceleration)
Total: $4,735,578
The 2013 rollover figure could also be subject to the following adjustments based on Top 51 players I do not expect to make the roster in 2013:
1. LB Lee Robinson: $465,000 ($480,000 base salary +0 workout bonus - $15,000 guaranteed acceleration)
2. CB R.J. Stanford: $630,000 ($630,000 base salary +0 workout bonus - $0 guaranteed acceleration)
Total: $1,095,000
However, the 2014 figure probably needs to be adjusted to account for Chad Bumphis' likely $480,000 salary.
All in all that gives me:
1. 2014 Salary Cap Obligations: $90,436,946 on 35 players
2. 2013 Salary Cap Rollover: $22,695,356
3. 2014 Salary Cap Estimation: $123,000,000
Total 2014 Expected Potential Cap Space: $55,258,410
That figure could rise as high as $56,183,410 if they were to cut DT Vaughn Martin in 2013 as opposed to 2014.
But the figure could also fall as low as $39,850,410 if the Dolphins don't make any of the 6 veteran cuts I proposed in 2014, and if they also kept Lee Robinson in 2013-2014.
Note: Spotrac hasn't yet caught up with LS John Denney's contract extension and his numbers aren't included in the 2014 salary cap estimate. His 2013 cap number is $1.1 million and his extension was 4 years, $4.3 million so I imagine he has about the same cap hit in 2014. So all of the above figures should probably be figured to be reduced by about $1 million.

No, the Miami Dolphins don't have the typical financial circumstances of an NFL franchise. The amount of subsidies they have received from their market is zero. That is extremely abnormal for a sports franchise. That is why they are paying $20M/yr. alone on just the interest of the renovations that Huizenga made.
Zack Miller. Now.
