Reshad Jones began 2016 hoping for more money.
He ended the year simply wishing he could play.
Jones, the Dolphins’ Pro Bowl safety, appeared in six games last season after suffering a significant rotator cuff injury in October.
Some three months after surgery, Jones is feeling much better.
“Every time I would see him, he’d tell me how he could play that game, which always kind of hurt me a little bit, because I’m thinking, ‘You’re pretty good. Don’t tell me that,’ ” Adam Gase told reporters Wednesday.
Still, Gase wouldn’t commit to Jones being ready for the start of organized team activities in a few months. But if he doesn’t get a new contract between now and then, Jones might not be there anyway.
He skipped all of the team’s voluntary spring workouts and the first day of mandatory minicamp last year to send a message: he wants a new deal. He never got it.

might be wise to let him walk in 14 months. Depends if he plays at a super level this season. Age/injury, and drafting his replacement would be a good idea this year. I don't want to over pay for a 30+ year old player
-
let's not get too excited 14 months from now. that's a dangerous path
-
He was our best player (or at least co-best player) on defense when healthy this year. If he looks like he's going to be healthy, we need to play him. We don't need him for 5 years, I'd pay just to have 2-3 healthy years out of the guy.

Hopefully, he's healthy. I would let him rehab and get back into playing shape, and if he looks good in the preseason, then we talk about an extension. He's already one of the highest paid players at his position in the league and certainly doesn't need a raise. If he won't play ball and sign a fair deal, then tag him a year from now.

Just pay him.number21 and Phins_Fan_87 like this. -
franchise him if need be

Pay him. He deserves it and we need him.
Next issue. -
Aye. -
He's exactly the guy you pay, homegrown, great player that wants to be the best.

No offense to Rashad....he is an amazing player....but he already gets paid like one. I have no sympathy for the fairly paid rich who want more.

If you go by total contract value, he's 11th in the league at about $28mil. In comparison, the top 3 safeties make between $51-$62 mil. -
Hard hitting safeties like Reshead and Bob Sanders and Palomalu fall off a cliff when it comes to health. They throw their bodies around to be awesome players but it's terrible for staying on the field.
I wouldn't give him a long term deal unless he is consistently healthy in 2017. He'll be 30 when his contract is up. I wouldn't give a 30 year old RB a long term deal. I think the same for a hard hitting safety.danmarino likes this. -
Either way, as you said, he was the 5th highest paid safety in the league overall in 2016. In 2017, he'll be the 8th highest paid (according to Over the Cap). When you're already in the top 10, you don't need a raise. He does need to be extended if he's healthy. Probably a three year deal averaging between 10-11m.danmarino likes this. -
He's damaged goods now! That shoulder is only going to go downhill from here! Find his replacement and let him go in a year!

I'm torn on this one. Obviously he's a top tier safety, homegrown, the kind of guy you prioritize locking up.
OTOH he's great in the box on a team that is in desperate need of a centerfielder type safety. I wouldnt be mad if the Dolphins pulled a Belichick and traded Reshad to a NFC team or non contending AFC team so that they could have more flexibility in signing other players. -
Great player, and I'd love to see him locked up long-term, but we need to know 2016 was a fluke, not the start of health issues year-after-year. -
Do we have the option to let him play out another year? I know he sat out this past offseason but I forgot how things ended. -
I'd roll the dice on a contract extension if Jones is willing to do it. Otherwise, let him play out his current one and go from there. -
