Barwin/Butler. :D only b/c Mike feels the safety will bear the tackling duties and a CB who can mirror a WR might be a bigger necessity in the AFC East. IMO, Butler fits the role of the CB we are lacking- a smaller quicker CB who can cover the smaller, elusive WR....Wes Welker.

Sean Smith and Paul Kruger.

Connor Barwin and Darius Butler were awfully tempting. Both good players but I like Sean Smith as the best cornerback in this class and Kruger is a very good player in my opinion. A good fit on the strong-side.

As much as I like Larry English going downhill, as soon as I saw Vontae Davis, I went to the next option.

Clay Matthews and Jairus Byrd is a very nice combination as well. I like Matthews but more at ILB than SOLB. Byrd is a fine player.

 

I chose Smith And Kruger. Ideally, I would probably want Smith and English, but there's no shot of that happening and I like Kruger. I wouldn't be upset with Butler/Barwin either, but I guess that would be a close second choice.

MC, now that you referred me to DolfanMikes great Quarters Coverage thread, I feel Barwin would have the greatest impact in it of anyone in the draft. You can give me Byrd, too. You like him a lot, so that's good enough for me. ;)

Just say no to midgets! What I would love would be for us draft Connor Barwin, Darius Butler and Ramses Barden. Pass rusher, cb and big physical wideout. All our major holes filled in 2 rounds! Leaves 6 picks for depth. :)

 

If anyone wants to chime in on this- based on my new enlightenment via DolfanMikes Quarters coverage...I'm starting to think that Victor Harris would be a great fit if this new base coverage. The kid's a playmaker who can cover, and IMO he's a potential diamond in the rough. He's high octane and plays with a fire under his ***! He reminds me of a wreckless version of Troy Polalamu. He seems to love for the game and plays with a lot of passion, so his wrecklessness is more than likely coachable. He seems like the kind of player who, if you respect and appreciate him, will give you 110%. ??????

I'd go with Barwin and Butler, just because Barwin's from UC - I'll show love for the local boy. Smith and Kruger would be fine as well.

 

Can you do a poll like this with people that you think will be there for each of our picks. then we can have the finished product of the forum mock draft. It could be interesting. If i knew all the bells and whistles of this forum i would do it, plus i'm not a college expert.

 

Thanks for mentioning his cone and shuttle times;). If we do run quarter coverage and the CBs get Safety help deep, then I'd love to see us draft an explosive playmaking corner who can tear it up inside 20 yards and help take away quick outs and slants. I could probably now add Alphonso Smith to this as well. ????
I'd almost rather emphasize cone and shuttle times over a 40 here. No? I am glad he has the straight line ability to run a sub 4.5 though.

Who would you prioritize in 2a, 3, and 4 in this hypothetical new regard?
Mark Parson in there anywhere? If tackling isn't as much of a priority due to Safety help than I could reconsider DJ Moore also.

Here's a philosophical question, MC- At what point do you sacrifice a CB's size, strength, and ability to defend the run for ability to defend the pass?

Because if you wanted the best of both worlds you could basically add 4 inches and 15 pounds to Alphonso Smith....but then it would cost you a top 15 pick. LOL.

If your name is Parcells then you probably never do. He considers run support one of the primary skills for a CB. If you're not very good at it he doesn't want you on the team. I know that he never cared for Sam Madison for that very reason. I'd be very surprised if Alphonso Smith is even a consideration for the triumvirate.

 

I went with the Utes. This is my preference. The question read which pair would you prefer. So obviously there's no wrong answer. But if you're trying to guess which pair is the most likely for the Dolphins then the Utes or the Pac 10 seem far more likely then the other choices.

I know that most fans tend to favor coverage guys but Parcells has always valued bigger CBs with great run support skills over coverage guys. I used to listen to his show and he always disparaged Surtain and Madison when I felt they were the best duo in the league. His feeling was that he didn't care how well they covered b/c they weren't good enough in run support. He didn't even list them among his top 5.

Of course it's possible that Ireland and Sparano value different things in their CBs. And I certainly can't say I know for certain whose opinion they would follow. But my guess is that Parcells' opinion still carries the most weight and that he would make the call.

 

Out of that group I like davis and english but ideally I'd wet myself if it was maualuga or Michael johnson at 25 and butler at 44. I like laurinaitis but I don't get the impression he is a Parcells player.

 

Sean Smith.....you always wonder with guys that big. Can they make it on the edge? I think they'd have him drop 5-10 pounds. Still I think we'll see someone(s) 6-0. Sherrod Martin?

I like Paul Kruger. Really liked what I saw in the Sugar Bowl. But I'm wondering if he's not Matt Roth 2.0.

He reads a lot like Roth: Intense motor guy, short arms, big for LB (though not quite as big as Roth), a bit stiff, limited pass rush moves. Where they differ is there are concerns with Kruger and power, and perhaps durability. And he's a bit older. Roth came in with that power, and was a key cog in the goalline package.

IMO we want to draft a LB that brings something we're lacking. While I really like Kruger, I'm not sure that's him.

If we're to assume, based on his contract, that Cameron Wake was essentially a 2nd-3rd round draft pick who is expected to help the pass rush (and maybe even succeed Porter), I think the area we'd want to upgrade would be ILB. Specifically Akin Ayodele, who is more of a coverage guy.

Naturally you see guys like Clay Matthews and Brian Cushing (and even Maualuga) mentioned here. Call me crazy, but I think that Clint Sintim could possibly go the Channing Crowder route and move inside (though Crowder had some experience inside at UF). He carries the least amount of risk overall IMO.

I must note that I'm not a guy who thinks we necessarily need to replace Roth. I think he's our version of Jarrett Johnson (Baltimore's sam). I think the spot opposite Crowder is where we need to improve.

 

There are 3 spots we need to improve with the front '7' ....

SOLB - i cut Roth some slack, as he was put in a position he was ill prepared for last year. This year he knows his anticipated role, so we'll see what weight he comes in at. Regardless, this position needs improvement.

DE - We need one of them to step up and start getting some pressure on the QB.

ILB - Ayodele needs improvement or replacement.

The 1st two go along with the FOs position that we need more pressure on the QB. ILB will help in run support and to a lesser extent blitzing.

Which pair - i would very much like to see the 'Bs' ... but doubt we'll get both with our draft positions.

I also believe that Macho Harris is on our radar screen, but more of a S pick than a CB. We know Parcells likes the VaTech connection.

To each his own.

He's got shorter arms than others and he has a great motor but I think that's where the comparison stops really. I think he's far more athletic than Roth is and he's quicker laterally. He's quicker in a straight line as well, he has a good burst and closes well on the ball carrier & Quarterback. He's got a better first step than Roth as well. I also dont' see the stiffness. He's played a lot in the two-point stance at Utah and looked fluid when I watched him. Changes directions well and can turn and run upfield.

I think the concerns with Kruger's durability stem from his off the field accident. He was stabbed and missed time and then at a young age, he was hit by a car I believe and lost a kidney. As far as I know, he hasn't had a major on the field injury but I may have missed something.

 

I second that nomination....if Barwin is gone :(

 

I like Victor Harris a lot, solid player and plays well in run support but I'm not sure he's answered the long speed questions. He ran a 4.46 at the Pro Day and ran a 4.68 at the Combine I believe. I also don't see it on tape, I'm not sure he's a guy who should be playing man to man down field and able to stay in the hip pocket of a wide receiver. I like his ball skills when going down hill, attacking with the play in front of him. Put him in a zone and I think he'll play at a high level.

Completely agree on the cone and shuttle times though, I'm not big on numbers because I rely more on what I see in games but those numbers stood out and were outstanding. He's got great short area quickness from the games I've seen and laterally, he can move very well.

 

I'd like to see how Harris is with some good coaching while a little more under control.... and less anxious to always be trying to make a play. Maybe that will help him in man coverage. He seems like the kind of kid who will give you his all and plays with passion and love for the game, so I would think he's coachable/correctable. ?????

I think he simply doesn't have the speed to play man to man.

I know you bring up the control and him being anxious and that's a good point. I also think that he's a bit too cocky. I see him playing off coverage and on the snap, he'll hop and flip his hips. That will be taken advantage of at the next level IMO. He cant do those goofy things like that. He's very passionate, yes but he needs to tone it down a bit.

 

I absolutely go Kruger and Smith, because I believe we can use our 2nd rounders to get them.

That means we can use the 1st rounder on someone else.... like Hakeem Nicks.

 

Butler is a wussy. Can't throw my hat in his corner.

For example, there is his... "I'm doin' 50 sets of 2."

On NFL Network's "Prime U", where Butler preps for the combine with Deion Sanders' trainers Butler had to do 100 reps of bench on Prime U, he wussed out and instead of trying, he took the easy route by doing 50 sets of 2 reps with breaks. No one else wussed out.

Plus, I can't even imagine him wanting to lay the lumber on a RB.

 

Faggins would have been great at covering slot guys. He has zero putside speed and physicality, but he could hang with the Welkers of the world.

 

Matt Roth is less quick than Kruger, imo. I also think Kruger will be better in coverage than Roth. Roth is horrendous in space (though improving), with the gait of a lumbering Swampthing. Kruger may not be very fluid in space, or comfortable in it either, but he's stillbetter than Roth. Also, I thought I recalled Kruger having okay hands for a DE, actually intercepting a couple passes? Or am It hinking of someone else?
