If Dwayne Bowe were a driven player with a work ethic and great attitude I would pick him, not because he's more purely talented than Wallace but because I believe his physicality and RAC skills fit with this personnel group's strengths and weakness profile better. But because there's mounting evidence that he's not got a great attitude, I'm forced to pick Wallace.

 

I wouldn't want either but Wallace if I had to pick.

 

I'm all for standing pat. Bess, Hartline, Gaffney, Armstrong and Moore are a better group than 2008. I'd love to see Matthews and Egnew get some work too. I had this team at 5-7 wins going in and as of right now they are in the thick of it.

Both players have pitfalls.

Bowe has reportedly has attitude issues and his work ethic has been questioned repeatedly (his hot and cold stats tend to suggest that's true, but it could be bad QB play as well). I don't see how we could go down this road again after the Brandon Marshall debacle. If the pick we would have to give up is small (ala Reggie Bush) then I could see the gamble making a bit of sense given his physical ability. However, how do you structure his contract? He's going to want to be paid. Is he really going to agree to a flexible salary based on performance? That's a hard sell, I think. Plus he is 28 years old. 29 at the start of next season. If we still plan on drafting a WR early in '13, It's not too big of a deal. But I have no idea wtf Ireland is going to do.

Wallace is not a true #1. He's a good receiver with big play ability. He certainly would offer us a skill set that we don't have. Considering how often we try to force the ball deep (to Hartline), that skill set would certainly be of value. However, does it make sense to give up a pretty high pick and a big contract to a player who isn't going to offer you the same production as the physically elite WR of the NFL? At the same time, he's 26 years old. You're going to get the best of his youth too. There's a reason Pitt isn't ponying up the big contract. AA lot of players of that ilk (6' and under with speed) are in the same boat. A guy like DeSean Jackson is incredibly talented and can create a big play. Is he worth a big payday?

If you have a choice between the two, I go Wallace. I would also still draft a WR in the round 2 area if anyone of interest is there and allow them to develop. Given Green Bay's history of drafting round 2 WR year after year, it could be for the best. That being said, I don't know if either is worth the price of admission.

 

I want to know/read an analysis (hint hint CK) of this draft's top WR's before spending multiple picks to get either of these guys.

I chose Bowe because think of both QB's throwing to each WR. Bowe has the crappier QB and has better numbers IMO. I haven't researched it but I believe that to be true. Bowe is more of a go to WR with red zone talent. Wallace is just a deep threat WR IMO.

 

Plus my dad might be the biggest die hard Chiefs fan on the planet and I already know he loves Bowe and would hate to see him go. Who can blame him? they're 1-5 and he's their best player. If I were my dad my thinking would be, Bowe isn't gonna carry the team, we suck, lets get what we can for him and make the team better.

 

Ideally both. We need size in the red zone which Bowe is and we need speed which Wallace provides. I voted Bowe though because I think the size he brings is a bigger priority right now.

 

Bowe does everything. Wallace is a superb deep threat but I don't consider him a true #1. Bowe I very much do.

Maybe Bowe isn't the best WR in the league but he's a very very good player who can be a #1 guy for just about any team. I'm not going to turn down a sandwich because the ham isn't BoarsHead when the one I'm currently eating is made of s**t.

 

That's a pretty bad analogy.

 

Even if we draft a kid next year, it's going to take 2-3 for him to develop. Not everyone is Julio Jones or AJ Green. With 10 games left, I can't imagine we're going to be in position to draft an elite prospect (top 5 pick) if any are available.

The best solution is to get a vet WR in here (Wallace, Bowe, Jennings, etc...) in FA (or via trade this year if the price is right, both compensation and contract) and draft a prospect with one of our top 3 picks. It's the best of both worlds. Present and future. One or the other is risky. The FA/trade could eat a ton of salary and never live up to the hype or the rookie could bust. If you have a franchise QB, you have to invest in him.

Cowboys had to give up a 2nd to move up from mid-draft to top 6. We could conceivably be in a similar situation. I'm not really sure giving up picks is really the way to go with a team who has many needs.

 

I haven't watched enough to know - but how much of Wallace's production comes from broken plays where Big Ben can launch it deep? Big Ben is so good at extending plays and I'm assuming that is a perfect fit for Wallace to suddenly streak down the sidelines. Not sure he fits the same in a more structured offense.

 

I cant believe no one is suggesting signing Greg Jennings in the offseason. Theres been a ton of speculation that Green Bay wont pony up to resign him, we have the obvious Philbin connection, and we of course need a #1 WR. He has FAR less downside than either of the other guys. No brainer.

 

I would rather bring back chambers and let him retire a fin and sign one more recevier and spend all our draft picks on cornerbacks, one safety, 1 or two defensive ends , and two runningbacks who can be standout players and then cut Daniel Thomas .

IMO if you consider that the main goal of this team right now should be the development of a winning culture, which is still very much in flux and evolving as we speak, you don't add a player who stands to make a lot of money and would therefore have "stature" among his teammates who would likely detract from that goal.

So if you're considering adding one of these two players right now, IMO the much better option is Wallace.

 

That's only after he realized he wasn't getting Larry Fitzgerald type of money. He is fast on the field but he falls into your player who stands to make a lot of money category. I would bet if he could pull out a big number season his head would be back to me first in no time.

The point is some people deny upgrades because they aren't "the best" when in reality what they have is among the worst. People like that never seen any sort of gradual improvement. They expect perfection or bust.

Also, the reason most of us do not want Bowe isn't because he's not the best. There are many things to take into consideration when trading for/signing him. I don't think he's worth it.

 

That's how I feel. It's ridiculous to claim that Hartline and Bess are the worst. We certainly need more at the position, but that doesn't mean you overpay.

I wouldn't pick either, but the greatest need to me would be someone that can stretch the field. Wallace best fits that. Of the two, Wallace could be argued as less the prima donna, and he is younger than Bowe. Wallace is also big enough to run the routes that make up the WCO, and could break tackles and get YAC yards.
But as I said, I would not go after either player.

 

I really love Wallace's deep threat ability. When MW hit's 4th gear, watch the **** out. That's the only reason I miss Teddy Ginn even a little. Penny/Henne weren't good enough for various reasons to connect deep with him. Nor did Sparano and Co. use him correctly. In this kind of offense, with Sherman's aggressive nature, how fun would it be do have a guy like that? Even Revis couldn't hang deep with him.

 

See I do consider it among the worst. I'm really really down on Hartline and don't like his game at all honestly. So it works better for me as an analogy.

I like woods but man these USC WR dissapoint in the NFL. Im a USC fan but USC WR and QB i would usually stay away from in the draft.
