It was a courtesy move, Nolan wanted out. He was pissed he didnt get an interview, so he requested out. Bush league to block him IMO. We did the professional thing and let him walk.

I wouldn't mind Bowles as the DC, but you just have to wonder what his interest is in staying with the Dolphins, now that he was passed over for the HC position. It might be uncomfortable for him to step back down again with the Dolphins, after being the HC for the last three games this season.

I think he will probably take one of the many offers which he will receive to become an assistant coach with another NFL team. Unless of course, Ross makes him a financial offer he just can't refuse.

I would actually be very surprised if any of the present coaching staff returns next season. Daboll's offensive schemes are not based on the WCO of the Packers, so I certainly don't see him being part of the coaching staff in 2012.

 

Once the word came out that Bowles has decided to look at other options, I will be very surprised if he returns in any capacity. It wouldn't surprise me to see 90% of the asst coaches replaced, to include all the offensive assistants.

 

I don't understand the desire for Bowles to be DC. He wasn't particularly impressive as a DB coach. The only reason I've seen for wanting him to be the DC is familiarity, which seems like a ridiculously pointless reason.

 

We need to clean house. Get rid of the stench that was the Miami Dolphins. I can't wait for a fresh new start.

 

People may laugh but how about Mangini? Sucked as a head coach but is a solid D-coordinator. Runs a 3-4, and knows the division well.

 

That was basically my view also if Bowles didn't get the head coaching position. I really don't see any of the assistant coaches staying at the moment, but perhaps Philbin has worked with a few of the present assistant coaches before and wants them to remain on the staff. I have no idea if that is the case.

I know there was interest by some on here for Daboll to remain as the OC. That might have been a possibility if Bowles had been hired as the HC, but I just don't see him staying now that it appears the Dolphins will be going to the WOC.

The next few weeks, seeing the comings and goings of the coaching staff should be very interesting indeed.

 

IMO, the most logical assistants to be retained are the two S&C coaches and the two ST coaches.

 

I certainly thought that the play of the special teams was much better in 2011, compared to 2010. I would have no problem at all if the coaches for this unit were retained. Early in the season the Dolphins were in terrible shape as a team because of the lockout, the players who came to camp out of shape certainly can't be blamed on the S&C coaches, because they could not work with these players during the lockout. As the season went along, players seemed to improve their conditioning and appeared to be stronger at the point of attack. So the S&C coaches certainly seem to have done a very good job as the season went along.

I can agree with you that it would make sense to retain the special team coaches and the strength and conditioning coaches for next year. Since the Dolphins have already given their assistant coaches permission to look for other jobs, Philbin will have to make a decision very soon regarding these coaches if he wants to retain their services. I don't think any of these coaches will have difficulty finding employment in the NFL for next season.

In one facet, total yardage. But, 19th in points allowed and #1 in takeaways. YMMV but IMO no defense that leads the NFL in takeaways can be labeled as poor. That's not unusual either for the Packers. They been near the top in takeaways the past 3 years and near the top in ints the past 5 yrs, including being 1st overall 2 times.

 

I'm not ready to give the defense a pass, but to add onto that line of reasoning, the Packers lead a lot this season and often by multiple scores. It would make sense that they would give up a bunch of passing yards when teams were forced to have to come from behind on them so often. I would be interested to see, if the stat even exists, the number of pass plays against the Packers this year vs the previous worst pass defense in NFL history.

 

Mangini actually makes a lot of sense. Wasn't there a report that Mangini regularly consulted Stephen Ross? Mangini is one of my favorites on ESPN since he joined. Intelligent.

 

Since Philbin has total autonomy in selecting his coaching staff, Mangini doesn't make any more sense than dozens of other coaches. He has only ever been a Defensive Coordinator for 1 season in New England and his until ranked 26th in total yards and 31st in takeaways.
His nickname of Mangenius hasn't been justified at all IMO.
