Here is one. Spanking kids reduce their self control.

So basically, spank your kids and they have better chances of being depressed, alcoholics or other mental issues.

 

I always wonder how we would react if it was a father with his daughter.

I am going to trust studies that actually study the brain and are within the last few years.

Edit: Your personal experience is that you have been spanked and by your own admission you are an alcoholic. There is a study that shows you have a bigger chance of being an alcoholic if you are spanked. So your own personal experience does follow this study.

Also, personal experience can be very flawed.

In my personal experience, taking a Nintendo cartridge out and blowing it, causes it to work.

In reality, blowing on a Nintendo cartridge from the Nintendo entertainment system damages the cartridge and does nothing when it causes it to work. In reality, it is the fact that I took it out and put it back in that caused the game to start working.

 

Fair enough. If it doesn't cause pain, then I don't think it counts in this situation.

 

I think you're just searching for appeasement along your own (archaic) opinion. When the tobacco companies were becoming the new devil with respect to PR, they went out and sought academics that would run research studies that would paint them in a better light. I"m not saying the U Cal Berkeley is along those lines, but to put all your faith in one study and let it justify your behavior is just plain lazy.

 

agreed. the quick smack to the butt is like squirting your dog with the water hose. snaps their attention away from whatever they were doing something wrong.

on a related note, I've also seen just as many parents who don't spank their kids have kids whose behavior is out of control. To clarify (barring some mental deficiencies) these kids misbehave because their parents don't get their kids to understand consequences of their actions. They may tell them to stop, but if the kids don't believe it, they will ignore it. It's a fine line you have to walk sometimes, especially with boys.

 

In my experience, with small kids, loudly slapping my hands together or stomping my foot snaps them to attention just as good as smacking them ever could.
