This guy has come in and turned us from a mid 20s ranked defense into a top 10 defense, he is probably our most respected coach as of right now and has definitely turned our defense around.
Now I don't want him to be our head coach because I just don't feel he was ever a good head coach, but people like Mularkey and Dave Toub are getting offered jobs so I just don't understand why Nolan isn't considered for any jobs. I hope no one gives him a head coaching job anytime soon because I'd like for him to be here as long as possible.

Didn't he already fail as a head coach for the 49ers?
-
He's not sustainable, he only confirmed his 2nd yr jinx...

Puka-head and MikeHoncho like this.

Yes, but the defense also picked up tremendously in the rest of the games. Burnett and Dansby were playing terrible the first 7 games and they finally woke up and Dansby was injury free the rest of the way. -
Hopefully Dansby will have his boys in the gym, right after the superbowl..full participation..Regardless of whats going on..you went thru that last year, learn the lesson, and do something special. -
He's proven he can't be a head coach. Having said that, Norv Turner and Wade Phillips keep getting HC jobs for some reason. iMO, they are the same, good coordinators, but the Peter-principle applies to them as HCs
-
Because Mike Nolan blows IMO, he has failed every team he has worked for. He will get another job somewhere and will suk at that too.

Some coaches are just better suited to be position coaches or coordinators, than they are to be head coaches. This was the case with Sparano, and Cameron, who were promoted to head coaching positions when they really weren't qualified for the job. I think Nolan, as well as Mike Murlarkey, are very good coordinators in the NFL, but I don't see either of them being good head coaches in the future.
The fact that Ross is even interested in interviewing Mularkey, if Fisher turns down the job with the Dolphins, shows how desperate Ross has become in his search for a new head coach. It is just extremely sad that the Dolphins look like they are going to have to settle for a backup selection for the head coaching position, because none of the top tier coaches seem to want to work for Ross or with Ireland.
Hopefully if Ross is not able to hire the best individuals to turn this organization around, he will finally get tired of owning the team and sell it to someone who actually knows what he is doing, in regards to owning a professional sports team. Perhaps Mickey Arison would be interested in purchasing the Dolphins. Arison has certainly shown that his only interest is having a winning organization and he is willing to go out and get the best qualified person to build the team. -
I thought he came out after the season and said he didn't want to head coach ever again because he likes being more hands on with the players and only coordinator could do that
-
I guess back in 2000 when Robert Kraft hired a failed retread head coach named Belichick, that some obtuse Pats fans also questioned the wisdom of that decision. -
The majority of defenses seemed to struggle that first month until things settled down. Not to mention in our first four games we had New England, pretty healthy Houston team, and a San Diego team that could be good some weeks; not terrible offenses. Players also seemed out of shape which is hard to pin on Nolan. Defense played pretty well I think as season went on, going have to score more than we did (20th in points scored) to win more of our games. As Mr. Clean pointed out, 6th in points allowed on the season.
Just thinking about that Denver game, Broncos scored 15 in regulation and Tebow looked like he shouldn't be in the league for all but five minutes. Sparano not going for two, Marlon Moore recovering the onside kick, Matt Moore not fumbling... One less bad decision by the offense or special teams and we win the game.
Not saying Nolan should be interviewed as a head coach but he isn't terrible.
By the way, the sidebar cuts off titles and it says, "Why isn't Nolan getting any head" :tongue2: -
One of the best defensive coordinators I ever saw was Buddy Ryan, and yet he was a failure as a head coach. As it was just said, sometimes a coordinator is suited to be just a coordinator.
-
I don't blame the D's slow start on Nolan. Clearly the players on the D were out of shape coming into the season. Dansby nearly 30 pounds overweight, Vontae and Smith getting gassed in the first meeting with the Pats. After that Vontae pulled a hammy and couldn't get back in the lineup for weeks - pretty clear indicator he was not in shape and then he wasn't taking things serious hence the arguement in the locker room and suspension.
-
The 49ers are 3 years removed from him being the HC and they are exponentially better with the talent he and Singletary picked, with an NFL rookie HC. I think that alone speaks volumes about his ability to properly motivate his whole team.

Mike Nolan has gone on record that he is happy just being a Defensive Coordinator.
