I think what the poster you quoted was getting at is that there are about a handful of important inputs into the "winning" equation (QB, defense, running game, turnovers, penalties, etc.), and as you bulk up any one of them, the others become less important. What I'm striving for here with Tannehill, personally, is enough of an input by him that talent elsewhere equals the success we all want. I think he's providing that sort of input at this point, and so the task becomes bulking up the other inputs into the "winning" equation.
Not trying to contradict Pads, but can you name me one or two franchise QB's that have been sacked, pressured, hurried and hit in the 4th quarter of a game while behind and came back by 7-10 point deficit and still win the game??? Give me the facts please because right now I can't remember one... Edit: I just thought of one... my bad... Brady... in the first game this Season... I really apologize for the sarcasm Pads... but Brady had 6 comp, 19 atts (32% comp), 31 Total yds (1.6 YPA), 0 TDs, 0 INT's and 41 QBR in the 4th, while originally trailing by 3... He also was sacked 2, one with a turn-over... If you remember he has being rush by the pressure, hit a few times by our DL at the time.... and that is what happens to a franchise QB who is usually clutch when the call comes for him to be.... I am sure you as well as I kept thinking that Brady will bring them back every time he had possession, but the D was relentless and he was rattled to the point that 13 passes went incomplete... when he needed to score points...
These guys are so enamored with DEEP PASSES. There is so much more to a QB than that. Except in Madden.
Tannehill Cons: Deep ball/Downfield accuracy Sometimes Pocket awareness Sometimes reading defenses (some can be pinned on Lazor i'm sure) Might need some work on touch pass. Pros: Great short passing game (under 20 yards in the air) Can throw a Laser immitating Dan the Man. Can Run. Anybody coaching this kid up needs to drill it into his head that tucking the ball is always an option. Just make sure you get down in time(which he does) He made an amazing comeback in the season. There was one point I was spear-heading calling for Matt Moore. Then Phailbin embarrassed him, then he came back and lit up for most of the rest of the year. Improves every year. Will pick up the deep ball now that he has less to work on, and the rest of the cons will go away. I'm on the Tannehill Train till at least through 2015. Lets see if he keeps improving. People who want to replace Tannehill aren't thinking clearly with the state of this franchise. He's a top 15 QB who has the potential to go well into the single digits. You don't give up on that. Especially not after what this franchise has been through since we lost Danny.
i agree about Marino and his counterparts, they were bad all the way around besides him..he carried the franchise on the right arm and what he could do inside the pocket..majicman. i guess my point is its only logical to think that if you improve the skill players the yac goes up across the board thus affecting the results of games, qbr, and general stats..and he doesn't have to play any better than he did than this year to achieve it..I guess therein lyes the whole debate I'm having with myself..
Great post. I just posted the Cliff's notes up here for reference. It's as if the coaching staff believes everything in life should be really, really difficult, and they're dragging their QB along with them. For me, this is particularly frustrating, because, after this year's performance, I could imagine Tannehill turning any of Wanny's, J.J.'s, or Sparano's teams into winners, but instead, we get to watch Philbin pretend his QB is Peyton Manning. If they're not going to make it easier on Tanny by rolling him out and doing some of what DJ and others have suggested, they need to make it easier on him by running the damned ball. Hell, make it easier on your beleaguered offensive line and run the damned ball. Or don't do these things and get fired after next season.
Mentioning Marino got me thinking about something. From 84-86, Danny lit the league up and averaged 40.6 TDs per season over that 3 year span. But after 1986, he only averaged 21.3 TDs per season the rest of his career. WTH happened? Clayton and Duper were with us until 92 or so. Webb and Sims were drafted in 90. Just trying to get my head around that 50% drop off in passing TDs for the next dozen or so years. Nat Moore retiring? Nat only caught 6 TDs a season on avg, but was he drawing extra coverage?
Disagree, Tannehill's poor play in that Greenbay game wore out the defense, and gave the packers chance after chance after chance. They were on the field all game long until Tannehill figured things out. That game specifically shouldn't even have been close, and in the end we lost on the last play.
Deep ball accuracy can't be dismissed it is something RT has to improve on to take the next step. But I did see improving this year. Enough to say it's a non issue? No but enough to provide hope that it will develop. Escapability is diff I believe it is Ryan forcing himself to stay and not take off too early and that it will improve 2nd yr in this system. If he does fulfill those 2 areas he will be elite. If not he will and is an above avg qb we can win with.. Again I remind you luck and Wilson came knowing all the nuances of being a qb, Ryan was still learning so yes it is taking him longer frustrating because of the instant gratification we seek. But the undeniable progress shows there is hope. Not a guarentee but hope of greatness
