Why the Dolphins only need $2.36 million in cap space to sign their rookie class

Free agency is essentially complete and the Dolphins’ roster is mostly set for 2012, but one question I still hear a lot is, “How much salary cap space do the Dolphins need to sign their rookie class? Do they have to cut or restructure any guys to fit their rookies under the cap?”
In short, the answer is “no.” But it’s a complicated subject, so we’ll do our best to explain it in plain English today.
Last week it was announced that the Dolphins will have exactly $6.438 million in salary cap space for its rookie class. And indeed, when the regular season begins, the Dolphins will have approximately $6.438 million worth of cap space represented by the rookies (a late-round player may not make the team).
But during the offseason, the Dolphins, who currently are $5.49 million under the salary cap after giving Cameron Wake his contract extension, don’t need to get to $6.438 million to sign the rookie class. Instead, the Dolphins’ rookie class will only add $2.36 million to the salary cap’s bottom line.

TrowaNew MemberTo summarize it as best as I can, during the off-season only the top 51 contracts of the 90 people on the team count against the salary cap. Only 3 of our rookies (Tannehill, Martin, Vernon) will have salaries in the top 51 so they are the only 3 who count towards the salary cap during the off-season. The idea is once the rosters are cut down to 53 players some of the guys not in the top 51 will supplant guys in the top 51 and therefore create the necessary cap room.
BigDogsHuntNew MemberI appreciate you finding this Trowa....but in the history of the NFL not a single team has ever been prevented from playing because of salary cap reason....I know we love to know all we can about Miami....but I just never worry or spend time over concerns with salary cap....we arent that loaded that I think its ever a concern.

I actually learned something here today (this is almost like an episode of South Park)... The top 51 is established well before the final cutdown date. That I never knew.

I have been wondering that too, I see on twitter hourly updates about teams signing their players and not a peep out of MIA.
TrowaNew MemberIt's not a big deal. The rookies contract is pre-determined by their draft position. It's going to be same tomorrow as it is today. The rookies will be under contract by the time the team needs them to be.
