About 12 months ago, Ricky Williams contract was to finish by the end of last season. The Dolphins decided to renew his contract for another year during the early stages of training camp, hence we will retain him for this season. By all accounts it's looking like a good move as he will again have a role in the Wildcat, and looks to be to in greater shape for his second consecutive year in this offense.

Currently JT's contract is only for this current season. So far he has shown up....not only literally but in practice, the reports are saying, that he is close to back to his former self. He has taken advantage and has been shining in Roth's absence. So should the Dolphins want to retain him for an extra year? Given that he is so experienced, a leader, a team player and mentor he'll also be great to learn from if a pass rushing specialist is chosen in next years draft. He looks to be in great shape. He always says how he could play another year or 2. However, he is getting old....real old.

Should his contract be renewed now (so they know for sure he's back next season), later (taking a wait and see approach) or not at all?

I think it's important to see what he has left before we start talking about a contract extension. There is also the matter of whether he would even want to continue his football career, he's been playing the hollywood card for the past few offseasons, he may decide it's time to call it quits.

we will absolutely redo his contract after he plays his butt off. he will earn a new contract, trust me! he's barely getting paid this year, but he decided to play for nothing to be back home where his heart is. He's knows he's worth more money, and he will prove it, and he'll get it!

Would it be a case where the longer the Dolphins wait the more money he could ask if he starts proving more and more of his worth? Could he renew for next year for cheap if they do it before the regular season starts?

They have the leverage not him. He can asks for whatever he wants to ask for but in the end it will be them who gives the thumbs up or the thumbs down for the contract.

I don't think it would matter when they do it he's going to want a certain amount anyway. The wait and see was more for the Dolphins side for them to see what he has left and then make the contract accordingly.. or not at all :praying: it doesn't come to that.

they should see how he does this year and grade him on a current basis. ive heard nothing but good things but its early. he is old, he does have a history of being all about me....i do like the idea of him playing strong side and joey on the weak side.

The FO holds all the cards here, they will resign JT when and if they want to. First JT will have to decide if he wants to play beyond this season, if he does, it seems obvious JT wants to finish out his career as a Dolphin, and he see's this team becoming special and maybe heading to the SB in a year or two. JT will want to be a part of that, and likely take whatever the FO wants to pay to keep him on the team. And this FO is smart enough to reward effort and playmaking, JT will get a solid deal if we do resign him.

It's hard to say what Ricky's market would be now if he hadn't renewed last year. The Dolphins decided to renew him early for some reason. I'm not sure the reason why. It could be because they expected a higher value. I could be because they knew they weren't going to be looking for a young RB anytime soon.

I'm throwing the idea out there to see if the franchise will use the same philosophy in looking into JT's contract right now if at all. There's no guarantee there'll be a stud OLB in the draft either for next year.

I think we should wait and see. We don't know if he has plans beyond this season. I would love for him to be here next season I don't know if he wants to. I'd wait and see.

    He is Pennington on Defense.

    1. Never thought he would be on our team.
    2. Suprisingly became available for nothing in the offseason.
    3. Signed for a good price
    4. Unreal dedication and understands their role on the team.
    5. Positive influence on others on the team.

I think we shall see the comeback player of the year again in miami, this time on the other side of the ball. I think they should sign him for one more year. Having just one more year of service from him would do wonders for the youth on D, not just the pass rushers but the LB's and Safeties and Corner backs. I don't think he'll expect a big payday either if we signed him to an extention of one more year. But they should do it now before he gets a lot of stats, because if he does, that one year extention could be a lot more pricey.

If Armando's source is to be believed JT is already making it known he wants to play for awhile longer.
......" Taylor was modest during his first training camp interview. He talked of learning the defense and surviving the two-practice-a-day drudgery.

But, privately, Taylor has big plans.

He has already told people close to him he would like to play maybe three more years, depending on how well his decathlete's body stays healthy

So really your first point is the one that has yet to be addressed.
How much does he have left in the tank?

Can't see that happening. He flat out said he would play for whatever Ireland was willing to pay him. He just wanted to be here in Miami.
He told the front office whatever fit into their budget....

probably similar but different.. in regards to they'll approach the numbers the same except it's a different position.

also from what i understand next years draft is loaded with OLB.

we don't need to rush to sign him ... lot's of things could happen between now and the end of this year .... Wake could show he is the real deal, JT could reinjure his foot - or worse ... about week 10 - we'll see how JT fits into the future plans of the team ...

glad he is back, but we need a SOLB more than we need JT and JP on the weak side ...

The fo brought him back because they think he can do the job.
I think if he plays like JT can play, they'll sign him next year.
I'm hoping he hasn't lost anything in the year he was away from here.
You all know I love me some JT and by everything I've heard in interviews etc. Sparano and the players think JT is going to be a big asset to the team.
Sparano likes the player and the man.
I'll wait and see what happens but I'm praying he's as great as he always was. And getting "come back player of the year" would be icing on the cake.
