I think the Fins will use a lot of the JT money on V. Carey locking him up for years to come. He is said to be happier now back on the right. I hope they sign him to a 5 year deal worth around 5 mil per season.

If they wait till the season is over...MAYBE...

    * He has a bad season and get him for cheaper, if they even want him.
    * He has an average season and signs for less to stay in MIAMI.
    * He has a great season and they lose him in FA.
    * He has a great season and they pay millions more vs. the cap.

I want him here with Jake Long for they next 5 years....how about you?

This is Parcells we're talking about. No loyalties to the current set of players so he'll wait his time.

I think they probabaly will not do it before the season, but I do hope they do given the salary cap space they have and his quality.

I'm hopeful that they didnt just spend all these resources on the offensive line, but are willing to let a proven, elite guy walk.

I really doubt he signs before unless its for a real bargain. I'd say he might sign after but it depends if he plays on the right all year, how well he does, how much hes asking for, etc.

Lots of variables, too early to really have any idea at all.

I would be sur[rised if he is signed to a contract extension even though Vernon has earned it. Take a look at next years draft and you will see that OT is one of the if not the deepest position in the draft again.

You give him a big extension right now and he doesn't work as hard this season.

Id make Carey work for it this season. I think our biggest focus right now should be signing Henne and Merling. Then worry about Carey after he proves his worth again this year. Make him earn it again this year.

I don't care as long as they don't allow that space to just go to waste. Either use it to lock up talented guys like Carey, Satele, Will Allen or Andre Goodman...or stick it into phony incentives so that we get the credit next year.

They may wait until mid-season to go heavy into stuff like that, though. If you think about it, it provides a heck of an incentive for players that are eligible to have their contract changed to perform really well. They'd basically be saying...work hard in camp, do your best, make a big impact during the games...and the best two or three of you are getting paid. The rest, you're S.O.L.

Let Vernon earn his first big check. Playing on the right side should only improve his play.

I wouldn't mind bringing in a WR or CB, but who's on the trade market and at what cost?

I wouldn't be surprised at all if we just carry all the space over to next year. The salary cap has become very fluid in the NFL.

Vernon Carey is a beast and unless Bill has lost ALL his marbles VC will be resigned at some point this year. If Bill don't want him I'm sure that he will find a great home somewhere with lots of flowing green!

He is but if he doesn't produce, we may not sign him. He has asked for a raise but he first might want to show his abilities on the field.

I would not expect Parcells and Ireland to extend Vernon until after they have gotten to watch what he can do first-hand for awhile. That means at least four to six games into the season, imo.

We certainly don;t want to wait until he is a FA then compete for him as his price will go way up. Any OT we pick up in the draft will take several years before they play at Vernon's level, but probably still make comparable money given the current rookie salary structure. Better to invest in a guy who is proven, but still young.

I wonder if Vernon is the type to refuse the Dolphins' offers to extend at mid-season due to either bruised ego (you not only drafted Jake and bumped me from LT, where I;d get a bigger payday if showcased, but wouldn't extend me before the year started) or seeing the possibility of bigger dollars beckoning him in Free Agency at season's end if he does not extend.

I personally think Vernon will get a good enough offer, and is a sensible enough guy to not get greedy. He will play well this year, they will offer him an extension during the season, and he will sign it.

I think IRELAND waits to see what Carey does on the right side before he ante ups any money. If by mid season, Carey is doing well, I think IRELAND offers him a new contract.

I doubt Vern Carey will be signed before the season starts, that is not Tuna's style, you have to earn everything now, what happened in the past means nothing at all.

That is a good system as the emotion is removed out of the decision making process, work hard, play well and Carey is resigned IMO.

I still have a sneaking suspicion that the front office and staff won't sign off on an extension for Vernon Carey until he either REALLY impresses them, or until Jordan Gross gets extended in Carolina.

They'll continue to keep an eye on Gross until one of those things happen.

Parcells engineered that Trade with WAS. So maybe he'll handle tht, and Ireland the contract specifics. But Parcells was acting in a GM role, but note that it was VP of football operations of the redskins who made the call.

Parcells will want to wait to see how Carey does on the right side under his new regime before he makes any solid offers.
