Don't really get the love affair with Hartline.
He is a solid depth WR and not much more.
If this regime concluded that Brandon Marshall is tradeable, then I would assume they'd consider Brian Hartline cutable. At least I hope so.
Having said all that, I doubt he gets cut. Only because the overall talent at WR on this team is pathetic. You know it's pretty bad when Brian Hartline is your #1 WR.

Another thing some folks don't consider about our RT situation last season, there were at least two games where one could logically say Colombo's terrible pass protection was the primary cause for the loss. I defended him in the preseason, because I did not see him totally pull a matador routine in pass protection. He seemed competent enough to get by with, IMO, at that time. But, once the regular season started, he was beat more than a drum in a Thanksgiving day parade.
I honestly believe if we would have had a Jon Martin at RT last season, we'd have finished no worse than 8-8. JMO, and it is really a moot point now.

Thomas was dinged up last season. Hammy problems, though there does not seem to be a consensus on how much they hindered him. According to PFF, he was the 3rd best blocking half back in the league last season, and from what I could see his blitz pickup was solid and consistent, so that rating does not surprise me. Granted, his ability to tote the rock is the main thing you want from your half backs, but still it's good to see him being very solid in one aspect of his position.

I don't understand what Brandon Marshall being tradable has anything to do with Hartline being cutable.

    Maybe nothing.
But at the very least it shows the value they put on WR's.
I'm just saying, if they can trade Marshall, cutting a guy like Hartline shouldn't sound so shocking.

I don't think Hartline is a number 1 but he's certainly a nice pairing with Chad Johnson assuming those are the starters. We have a month before the games get going. I hope Hartline is ready for the opener.

Mr.Clean read what I wrote: that dude has an incredible physical skillset for a WR.
Would you admit there is a difference between physical skill and skillset?
One refers specifically to physical attributes i.e. size and speed which you admit is 'blazing'
Those elements make up physical skillset and it was Gates physical skillset that got him drafted in the first place.
He might prove to be a guy with outstanding physical skillset that doesn't pan out.
But to say that he Gates doesn't have outstanding physical measureable is either dishonest or needlessly argumentative.

People talk about Bess being the guy you need to replace if you wanna more explosive offense, I disagree, Bess is and will be fine for our offense in the slot, for the future as well, .Hartline is a four Imo, so eventually we need to find that # 1 AND #2..

I'm going to chime in here. I really hope Gates succeeds. A term like incredible, relative and subjective as it is, maybe a bit strong. The only physical skillset Gates has that is really worth mentioning at this point is speed. However, a 40 time between 4.3 and 4.4 is not that uncommon in todays NFL. So I can see why Mr C took some issue with your superlative.

I don't know that we've seen the best of Hartline or Bess. Our offense, for so long, has been primarily a running team, our OL wasn't built to hold off the pass-rushers for long periods of time, so the Wrs for the most part weren't going to get a lot of separation. The Qb inaccuracies also play a part in the YAC, and we seem to pass mostly only when we had to, and we sorely lacked sophistication in the passing game. It may take a while or not, but either way, since we're changing our identity, there's some hope that the Wrs that we have will be more than we've seen or expected.

I totally disagree. Bess is fine, however he is not explosive. he has a limited skill set and can really only play slot and be effective in passing routes under 15 yards. Hartline is a player who can be effective in every passing route. His quickness is vastly underrated and his ability to run routes is crisp. Give him a quarterback who can actually anticipate routes and throw wide receivers open, Hartline could be a very dangerous player.

That means Ginn has incredible physical skillset as well which wouldn't be true. Just because a guy is fast doesn't mean he has impressive physical skillet.

. I don't think being a four is a bad thing..his talent And football acumen deserves a roster spot, but Bess in this offense can stretch things horizontally which is key..Dupree, I think your gong to be pleasantly surprised with some improved quickness from Bess.

Then you guys don't undestand the difference between physical skillset and actually being good.
    Big difference.
I never said Gates is a good WR only that he has a great physical skillset which is true.
But, it also true of many players that don't make it.

The list of WRs with better physical skillsets then Jerry Rice is long, but none were better.

I understand the difference just fine. What I am saying is ONE great quality alone, does not mean he has an overall incredible physical skillset.

I don't think we're the ones that don't know what physical skillset is. A guy who is 5'11 does not have great physical skillset.

    He's fast, that's it.

A bit nitpicky, but Bess isn't a slot receiver. He just looks like one. Except for last year(his career worst), he was lined up outside it more often than not, and is more productive per-snap split wide than in the slot.

If we're going to be running a lot of 2 TE sets, then IMO our starting flanker needs to be a better threat than Hartline. IMO whoever plays that role really needs to be enough of a vertical threat that defenses will respect him so that our TEs & backs underneath have more space to operate. However, with 3 & 4 WR formations, Hartline is a valuable player, as is Bess. I'd use Hartline more on 1st & 2nd down in 3+ WR formations and Bess on 3rd down. In 2 TE formations I hope either Wallace, Gates, or Naanee can step up b/c they possess greater natural ability IMO. If Wallace or Gates can develop Hartline's route running prowess, they'd be dangerous.

That's b/c he's a machine along the sideline in out breaking routes, no?
I'm guessing Bess and Tannehill might develop some nice chemistry as the season progresses b/c of it.
Bess isn't the fastest guy, but his ability to break off a deep out on a dime makes him a decent mid-range vertical threat if he has a QB who can routinely & confidently drop that throw in between corner and safety IMO.

lol at the irony.... clowning your own player out of ignorance or lack of perspective or because its an internet forum where people don't admit they're wrong *shrugs*
but whatever floats your boat, the dude is basically Greg Jennings (5'11-197-4.42-36 vert-9' broad) but taller, quicker, faster:
    Edmund Clyde:
    5'11.6--192--4.31
    40 vert
    4.17 20 yard shuttle
    6.87 3 cone
    KR/PR skills

but yeah Gates doesn't have a great skillset for a WR...okay....I guess neither does Greg Jennings or Victor Cruz or Santana Moss etc...
