How does it work? Do I need a Wireless router? I kinda want to get set up to play Gears 2 this November so can anyone help me out?
You need a wireless router and the costly 360 wireless adapter (which probably costs more than the router + a game itself). You can find some wireless bridges or non-M$ gaming adapters that may be cheaper though. Setup should be a piece of cake but feel free to ask if you hit a roadblock.
Okay I think I have you fixed up. Here is the link: http://compnetworking.about.com/od/wireless/ss/wirelessgear_5.htm On this website you will see at the end of the first paragraph to compare prices which will allow you to check on three wireless game adapters. Also in the second paragraph it tells you have these adapters will work (plus if you buy one it will tell you how in the instructions). Plus the prices you can find for these adapters are 1/2 as expensive as the Xbox360 adapter and that's new on Ebay or somewhere you can get them cheaper. Here are some more links. This one is a bit complicated but could be your cheapest option. http://www.geeksaresexy.net/2007/10/02/how-to-cheap-wireless-for-your-xbox-360/ Here is a way to do it through your laptop for Free: http://www.instructables.com/id/Connect-an-Xbox-360-to-Wirless-without-an-official/ Also looking for cheap gaming adapters on Tiger Direct and other places are your best bet because a third party gaming adapter is probably your best way to go. However if you are cheap and feel like geeking out you could try some of the more complicated ways I provided links to.
If you want the easy button (but not the cheapest) just get the 360 wireless adapter:http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=7457432&st=360+wireless+adapter&lp=2&type=product&cp=1&id=1126591945477 and a LINKSYS Wireless Router like this one:http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8741365&st=linksys&lp=1&type=product&cp=1&id=1202648529130 and you'll be set up in 10 minutes or less.
I wont be getting it right away I just need to know. Because our main Comp is going out and my dad wants to get a Media PC and we want to switch to wireless.
Well, if you want range and speed for the router, then 'N' is the way to go. So you might want to spend a little more and get this baby: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8639967&st=linksys&lp=2&type=product&cp=1&id=1194054018722 OR THIS ONE http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8639958&st=linksys&lp=1&type=product&cp=2&id=1194054018654
be careful, my mom has verizon fios and when i lived there her boyfriend tried using the wireless adapter and they called and said it doesnt support fios...so i guess it depends on where you live...check out craigslist for the wireless adapter...i just got a d-link wireless router, and a 100 ft ethernet and then just hooked it up..it saves a lot of money and more reliabe all the way across the house
I have Fios and it works. I have the wireless router Verizon supplied and I use the original Xbox wireless adapter. Still works, no issues. Here is a link on ebay for $50. LINK I doubt they are still sold in stores, but if you know anyone who had an original XBox I'm sure you could get it off them cheap.
You will need a wireless router and a wireless adapter. However, if you have a laptop you can get by without the wireless adapter which runs for $100 by using a laptop one. This is how I have connected to Live after my puppy chewed through my Cat5. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cZBTX-fDZmE
The speed is fine using the laptop as long as you are not using the laptop to download files and such.
