Finally. I’m not a huge fan of the game, but this took way too long. For those who don’t know, this is a pretty significant game from the old Squaresoft and the Chrono Trigger team. One could argue that it marked the start of the modern era of video game storytelling. At minimum, it’s a pretty big landmark. I would say it’s far and away a more significant RPG than Final Fantasy VII. Tough to talk about Xenogears without spoiling the plot, but it’s worth playing through just for one character who’s more Darth Vader than Darth Vader.
I liked it when I first played it. The plot was really good. It was the first RPG I bought/played after FFVII I remember not getting as much out of it as FFVII. Take in mind this is sooo long ago at this point though.
FF7 is most people’s gateway game to the JRPG genre. By definition, that group isn’t going to get as much out of other JRPGs than they did from FF7, even if the game in question is vastly superior. I dislike Xenogears for a variety of reasons (most of which were corrected by the Xenosaga trilogy), but objectively, Xenogears is more significant a video game than Final Fantasy VII. It didn’t singlehandedly establish the JRPG genre outside Japan, but as a pure video game, there’s much more to bite into.
If you’re determined not to pay for it, then odds are you’ve been emulating the thing for the last 5 years.
Just saying. The PSN release wouldn’t be relevant. I know I didn’t need to wait for the PSN release of Suikoden to replay it a few dozen times.
