Charlie Clay was practicing with a knew brace on today..

Amazing what can happen when a coordinator uses the entire skillset of your Qb. And utilizes the read option doing so.

wow man a lot of **** has to come down before this happens, i think philbin only goes if the team is not improved from last year, which would mean 9-7 and probably even playoffs, if we
don´t get that, that would mean the offense hasn´t performed up par, which will not look very good on Lazor´s resume, so i doubt this could happen, Jim Harbaugh or Gus Malzahn or BUST

I don't see how our offense would be good enough to make Lazor a HC candidate AND our team be bad enough to cost Philbin his job.

Yeah, that's the hard part. Loyalty would dictate that you have to fire Philbin first and then ask Lazor to take the job, but if he says no, you're up the creek. If Lazor puts a great offense on the field, why take his attention away from it by promoting him to HC? Just pay him more.

The thing is, if the offense is great enough for Lazor to be a hot HC candidate, then I'd imagine our W-L record would be vastly better than last year since our biggest problem then was...offense. If our record is vastly improved there's be no reason to fire Philbin.

This is just going around in circles: There is reason to fire Philbin if, like CK said, he's supposed to be an offensive guru, who had a poor offense until Lazor came along. Also, if Lazor is responsible for Miami's success and garnering attention for HC positions, you don't let him get away just because he helped Philbin to a good record.

Barring an unbelievably bad season (6 wins or worse), I believe Ross is committed to this front office and coaching staff through the 2015-2016 season.

Hopefully not because that would mean failure.

Unless we're talking years down the line. I'd be cool with that.

EDIT: Fin D sums it up nicely above.

Philbin was an offensive guru. You'd be trading an unknown HC prospect but offensive genius for a known HC that would have improved his record every year and is also an offensive genius.

Yeah it does not make a lick of sense to fire Philbin just to keep Lazor from going elsewhere, if he's so highly coveted that would mean we did something special. Which means Philbin shouldn't be fired.

I think it's far more realistic that Lazor is retained as an OC by a new head coach than it is he gets a job here or elsewhere as a head coach.

If he does a good job, he's likely a very palatable option to defensive head coaches or guys from WCO-based backgrounds.

ps fire Philbin, out of a ****ing cannon if necessary.

Eh saying Philbin is an offensive genius is too much for me after he sat by and watched Sherman destroy ours.

In the hypothetical that Lazor does great things in this offense and that would make him an offensive genius, then Philbin deserves the title even more for what he did with GB.

Besides, we have to stop pretending that a blind spot over a coordinator is some huge indicator of a HC's worth. Shula did have Olividatti here for a considerably longer time then Philbin had Sherman after all.

Defense collapses. If Lazor moves our offense from the bottom rung Philbin had it, to the middle or top, but our defense collapses and we have a crappy season, Philbin could still be on the hot seat.

    Another scandal would hurt too.

Offensive genius who didn't design the offense or call plays. He game planned. He didn't even get involved with shaping Rodgers. He game planned. That was about it. And it was painfully obvious the first two years here.

It's happened before. Our defense was meh last year but scoring wise (for a multitude of reasons) it matched our offensive output and was pretty good (hence 8-8).

The one thing you can say about the NFL is there is no sure thing.

Na I don't think so. Our offense was terrible last year so why wouldn't Philbin help fix it if he's this offensive genius?

Hard to imagine someone w that level of skills sitting by and watching us make ******ed offensive decisions over and over again, but it happened.

The thing with that though is Sherman is Philbin's mentor. It's a lot easier to fire some random coach you brought in than it is to fire someone you've admired and looked up to your entire coaching life.

Either way, the Sherman era is over and I'm looking forward to seeing what Lazor is capable of. Love what I see so far.

I don't think it happens when there's almost no real change in personnel and coaching. Sure it CAN happen, but I seriously doubt it. In fact, its more likely that our defense will improve than get worse at this point.

Why wouldn't Shula help fix Olividatti's horrible defense for 12 years? Is Shula no longer a defensive genius?

I get it our offense sucked under Sherman. Philbin should have got rid of him sooner. That doesn't mean Philbin's accomplishments are wiped away and he's purely ****.

He wouldn't even have to get rid of him if he helped him to fix it last season. He either didn't try to or what they attempted fell on it's face.

Like I said, I'd expect an offensive genius would be able to improve his own and not watch it completely disintegrate.

I mean are you really that surprised that nobody would question calling Philbin an offensive genius? Sounds ridiculous.

Then you feel the same way about Shula.

Again, I think its bizarre to assume that a second year HC had a blind spot with his mentor so therefore all of his past accomplishments are nothing.

Coaches are human, they make mistakes. If Lazor is as good as we all hope, who went out recognized and got him to sign? Philbin. That certainly leans more towards my point than yours, no?

No, I don't. I don't throw the word genius around. Shula was a great coach.

Again, nobody said that so stop making it up.

And we have proof that Philbin was pushing for and responsible for bringing Lazor in? As I said, I'd think someone w the title offensive genius would of fixed or at least improved it last season before losing the post-season in spectacular fashion. We all saw the offense was **** and needed to be at least tweaked and it seemed nobody did **** about it til after the season was over.

Philbin is entirely accountable for the decision to hire his friend. The team suffered because he was unable/unwilling to intervene in a critical fashion, and would continue to suffer if Philbin was not pressed to fire Sherman. That's ultimately a negative mark.

It is even more problematic when you consider that taking a big-picture, managerial style role was essentially supposed to be Philbin's strengths.

I remember in early 2012 when we were 4-3 a lot of people were worried about losing Sherman as our offensive coordinator. Some people even wished he was our head coach at the time, and preferred promoting him instead of losing him to another team.

I swear, if some of you backseat owners ever had the chance to run the team you would make the Jacksonville Jaguars look like the greatest run franchise in the history of sport. Lazor would go from QB coach immediately to head coach based off a presser and fired after starting 0-1 and giving a bad post-loss presser...

Oh and the Seattle Seahawks had the 29th ranked defense in Carrolls first season there so I suppose he should have been fired at the time? And he didn't even have to deal with a ball and chain for a GM, aka Jeff Ireland. Joe Philbin will go as Ryan Tannehill goes. I know you guys all think Tannehill is being held back by poor coaching but its entirely possible the opposite is true too.

No, I'm applying your criteria to a different person to see if it holds water.

First of all, i'll remind you that you jumped in to a hypothetical, so no one is calling Lazor an offensive genius at this point. But if he turned around our offense (again all part of the hypothetical) and someone chose to bestow on him the title of offensive genius for that, then it should also apply to Philbin for what he did with GB.

Secondly, genius doesn't mean perfect. Geniuses make mistakes, they are human. Now if you've personally redefined the word genius to mean perfect that's great for you, but then it would make no sense arguing about it with someone whose definition doesn't match the one you created.

Yea, as you're making up my criteria for me lol

I disagree w your statement of Philbin being an offensive genius and I think he's a mediocre to bad HC thus far. That's all I'm gonna say. Nor have I seen anything that says he pushed for Lazor.

I didn't make anything up, I'm going off of what you said. I'm also not saying Philbin is an offensive genius. Again, it was a HYPOTHETICAL and under the criteria put forth in the hypothetical he would be an offensive genius. This isn't difficult to follow.

    He hired Lazor. That's fact.
