Though I agree with most of what you said the 2 I disagree with are Fasano and Hartline. Both are good roll players who are not used enough imho.

i agree with a lot of it. i wouldnt dump carey till you find a replacement and incockneato should def go first.
hartline is better than bess.
sean smith is too young to dump at this point.
moore is horrible, unless we draft a top qb then id still keep hene and let them win it out in camp and preseason instead of just handing it to hene like they did this year. -
Koa Misi? Brian Hartline? Sean Smith? Anthony Fasano?
God I am glad you don't run this franchise...B.Sebo, BuckeyeKing, dolfndav34 and 17 others like this. -
I think Miami needs to upgrade the receiver position with a more explosive #2 receiver. If that were to happen, Hartline would be fighting for a roster spot.
Anthony Fasano would be a good #2. He is a good blocker and has good hands. He doesn't stretch the field and he doesn't create a very viable threat for opposing defenses. Fasano catches a touchdown or two and people think he is untouchable. What about all of the other games that he would disappear in?
Sean Smith is ALL talk. He is one of the most inconsistent players on this team. He finally had the ability to hold onto an interception against Dallas. One interception doesn't deem you safe by any means. Smith probably does have a future here, but the position needs an upgrade.Aquafin likes this. -
You probably should of named the article "Players that Miami needs to bench." I can't get behind simply parting ways with several of these guys. Guys like Reshad Jones, Sean Smith, Anthony Fasano, Koa Misi, Bell, and Hartline.
-
Once again, nice presentation from the bleacher report, but content is lacking. I disagree with most of the article, besides the blatantly obvious choices like Carey and Columbo
-
Well MF, if you depart with most of these playerts you could be departing with some that have the capability of being playmakers, those that coaching has not been able to mold and release...
Some of them are Vontae, he has skills and talent for the position and so does S. Smith...
Hartline... Is it me or even when he catches passes in the field with room to run does his feet get tied and twisted and just drops to the ground alot. I see him catching a pass that is wait high and he just goes low and goes to the ground, without an inkling to take it upfield, like he is expecting to get tackled right away...
Carey... He is a shadow of what he once was, don't know if it's coaching or injuries during his career... I think mostly now its just that he is not to thrilled about his cut in pay...
Colombo and Jones, just should see the field as depth not starters...
The rest are as I stated above, solid players, that could start and or be great depth for any team... and you do need mostly these types on a team...Miamifins854 likes this. -
Sorry 854....... I got you graded at 40%, maybe 50% (as if that means anything!)
You don't cut second year players drafted in the second round unless they have kidnapped the owner's daughter. There is still considerable difference between the college game and the pro game, and some players don't get all the nuances until their third year or so. So much for Misi.
Carey should be let go. He can't seem to stay in shape, and the time he played out of shape and compensated with effort has taken its toll.
Columbo should never have been signed. End of report!
Jones - Second year player??? Unless he shows signs of being a serial killer of defenses.... I don't think so...but.... he needs a lot of coaching which this staff has not done and may lose in the numbers game.
Henne - Not here. Not now. Not because of a lack of talent, but by the way he was handled by an incompetent staff and the amount of blame heaped on his head. He needs a fresh start somewhere else - with the proviso that with our luck, he will come back and chew a large chunk off our tookus at some point in the future!!!
Merling - Bye, Bye!
Smith - didn't we see early this year that there are worse CB's on this team? No worse then back up material.
Fasano - even you said he would not be likely to be cut, and he has made some plays. Surely there are better choices for letting go at this position than the starter who has shown signs of not only blocking, but even...(gasp!)... catching touchdown passes!!!
Bell - well.....:wheelchair::wheelchair::wheelchair::wheelchair: - The train of time seems to be passing!!!
Hartline - Not until we have someone better to replace him. The new speedster has not shown that he can cut it yet, and cutting Hartline now is counter-productive ATT. There is something to be said about having three possession receivers on the field at the same time - specially when you need a first down.
That being said. It is a pain in the gazootis to see that we need to replace the entire right side of the offensive line at this stage of the regime's tenure. That alone is a cause to question the retention Sparano/Ireland. It is also part of the reason we are 3-8 right now!
Oh well...
Next year in Jerusa... er... Miami! -

Don't agree on Hartline, Bell, Koa Misi or Fasano. The rest, perhaps...Colombo and Carey definitely.

I think the sad fact of the matter is, is that a lot of Miami fans overrate Dolphins players. Koa Misi, Brian Hartline, and Reshad Jones were the three that struck me the most. I don't think Miami needs to be rid of them, but they could certainly UPGRADE the starting player at those positions. I think if you draft someone like Courtney Upshaw, sign a Robert Meachem, and draft a S or sign a FA like Dashon Goldson, that would accomplish an upgrade at all 3 of those positions. I think you could also upgrade over Yeremiah Bell (do we have that on the roster already in Jones or Clemons?), Richie Incognito, Kevin Burnett, and to a point Reggie Bush. It's hard to say whether it's just been simply bad coaching, or if those players aren't as good as advertised. Jason Taylor certainly hasn't provided much, Will Allen either, yet both of them play rather large roles. There were other options out there, most notably Antwan Barnes, who is having a better year than Misi and Taylor combined.
As for Sean Smith, I'm undecided. Hypothetically, if you're going to make a move and it involves trading a CB to move up in the draft or for another player, whatever. I'd rather keep Vontae Davis. Though he's been hampered by injury, I think it's clear he's better at this point than Sean Smith (anyone else impressed by his coverage of Dez Bryant on Thanksgiving?). I think you can certainly upgrade over Sean Smith as well, depending on how the chips fall in the draft.
My main question would be, what do guys like Will Yeatman, Ikaika Alama-Francis, Will Barker, etc. actually bring to the roster? I think you can count the number of times they've been active, combined, on one hand (I think Alama-Franics is the only one who's played). The bottom of the roster churning has slowed this year, but the overall talent of the bottom of the roster is pretty bad.Aquafin and Miamifins854 like this. -
This "article" was really goofy. Its like the writer decided on the round number of 10 and then looked for 10 underachieving players and advocated their being cut.
You don't "part ways" with Sean Smith or Brian Hartline. Both are very good players whose salaries are quite small. -
If Sean Smith were half as talented as he thinks he is, I'd keep him. But when you make one play every couple weeks and start pounding your chest like you're "the man", it gets old. Channing Crowder did the same thing.

I don't agree with a few and there are some that should simply be benched. I said before this year that I felt Misi was an inside backer because I didn't feel his pass rush skills were that of an outside backer. His problem, even dating back to college has been that he gets to the QB but does not bring him down. This is further proven by looking at last years PFF numbers which have him at over 55 combined hits and pressures but only 5 sacks. That's an astoundingly bad ratio compared to most other good 3-4olb. I still wouldn't cut him though as he's affordable and in my opinion could easily be slotted in Burnetts role or in Crowders old role which is an area we lacked in as well; an inside backer that can take on a OL.
Hartline there is simply no basis for. Yeah he's borderline clumsy but he does make catches and he's a good route runner and a willing blocker.
Smith is inconsistent but again I wouldn't cut him. He should be given a chance at safety before it gets to that extreme.
Phillip Merling is a 4-3 DE IMO and is lost in the 3-4. Let's see what the new coach wants to run before we go dumping players that could be useful.
Anthony fasano could be upgraded upon but again I wouldn't part ways. He's an elite blocker who is a decent receiver. -
Though Fasano is having a good yr, Hartline disappeared for 3 weeks...and we won those gms, when a guy produces -0-, and he starts at a skill position, that is not a good indicator.Disnardo and texanphinatic like this. -
I would have just listed Marc Columbo's name 10 times.

There are a lot of young players on this team (Misi, Jones, Smith, etc.) that have shown flashes of ability but have been inconsistent or are just underperforming. Since this team will probably have a new head coach and most likely a number of new assistants, I'd prefer to keep them around and see what a new staff can pull out of them first before I'd get rid of them.
Ronnie Bass and Disnardo like this. -
We've lost 4 gms by 3 pts or less, do we need a blow up, or just add some key pieces?
How about 1 pm home games in the heat? Would that be worth 1 win? 2 wins? -
-
Hopefully whomever the next coach is doesn't utilize the Nick Saban Memorial Bubble as often as Sparano has. Really, I think it should only be used if the weather is so bad you can't practice outside. This team needs to be better conditioned to take advantage of the natural home advantage they have. That is of course if Stephen Ross lets them. -
Sorry, can only buy in on 5 (Colombo, Carey, Bell, Merling, and Henne. These 2nd and 3rd year players are still in developmental stages and could be nice players, not necessarily starters but good players. Maybe a couple will become outstanding players. Don't want them on other teams.
-
I could not disagree more with Hartline, Fasano and Bell. You want to cut the guy leading us in Receiving TDs? Also, just because Bell is older doesnt mean he still isnt servicable. He has clearly been our most consistent secondary player. Also, Hartline is not getting a big contract, hes a very good 3rd receiving option, and he's young...why?
-
Anthony Fasano is in the top five of tight ends of yards per reception. How is that not stretching the field, and why would you get rid of that?

Charles Clay is interesting to me. Is he a FB? Well, I'd say his in-line blocking isn't up to snuff. Yet. Is he a TE? I think whomever the next coaching staff is will end up plugging him in as the #2, provided he can keep improving with his blocking. He's decent is space, as I think we've seen over the past few games, Kansas City specifically. However, as in his FB play, he's not that good on the line, or even off the line when blocking against the defensive front seven. Perhaps Miami looks at a mid-late round option, for example, Ladarius Green from Louisiana-Lafayette. He's 6'5"/6'6" and only 235lbs right now, but certainly has the frame to grow. He's built like a small forward in the NBA. I think his being on the roster would certainly benefit the Dolphins further down the road than Will Yeatman for example.
It's oversights like this that continue to baffle me and make me feel very uneasy if Jeff Ireland is retained. Why keep Will Yeatman? Why keep Ikaika Alama-Francis? They're not going to help you down the road. In the past, he was churning and burning guys like this off the roster; yet this year, with his job on the line, he keeps guys like this? I don't get it unless Ross has mandated that he not spend any more and to stand pat with what they have.Boik14 likes this. -

Good One!!!!
And an even better point... get them boys out in the sun and get them in SHAPE for South Florida weather. -
Hartline and Fasano are fine. Fasano is the ONLY Tight End we have, when we should have two...not to mention he has to block because the right side of our O-Line sucks. We need another TE, we don't need to get rid of the only one we have that can do anything of note.
And Hartline makes some great catches along the sideline. We need to worry about drafting a QB, fixing the O-Line and maybe doing something with the safeties. -
Brian Hartline - So because you want an more explosive #2 wide receiver... that means just cut Brian Hartline? If you want to upgrade that receiver slot opposite Marshall, fine. But you don't cut good players because you want to upgrade the position. Would you rather have Marshall, free agent/draft pick, Bess, Gates, and Moore/Wallace OR Marshall, free agent/draft pick, Bess, Hartline, and Gates?
Anthony Fasano - This is one of the most underrated tight ends in the NFL. You are measuring the success of the tight position based solely on receptions and nothing else. This is stupid. Fasano is a solid receiver and a great blocker. Personally I think the tight position will be OK in the future if Charles Clay continues to develop like he currently is. Fasano is a better blocker than most of the other NFL tight ends and he can make plays down the field... maybe he isn't a wide receiver playing tight end, but that doesn't mean he is isn't valuable to the franchise.
Sean Smith - I clearly won't change your mind on Sean Smith... you compare him to Crowder who was unnecessarily hated by this fanbase because he wasn't picking off the quarterback and racking up sacks (because we were clearly blitzing him ALL the time). Sean Smith is not a number one cornerback at this point in time however he has had to play that position for most of the season because Vontae Davis wasn't healthy or he was being an idiot showing up to a team meeting with alcohol on his breath. He is young and I still believe he can be a good starting cornerback in the NFL.
You need to take some time to understand roster management and our players' salaries (some of these young guys are still cheap and will contribute). We can't field a team of 53 all-pro players. A lot of these guys you want gone may not be elite starters, but they can still contribute on the football field in various ways. The only guys on there that I flat out agree that we need to dump are Marc Colombo and Philip Merling... plenty of those guys (Jones, Bell, Henne, Carey) are circumstantial based on whether we can find an adequate replacement and their salary demands.Larryfinfan, MrClean and Boik14 like this. -
Honestly, Koa Misi is garbage. I wouldn't cut him since we have no OLB depth, but another pass rusher might be our biggest need after QB and RT.
-
We need an upgrade over Misi, but I wouldn't cut him unless he completely falls off the face of the Earth next year. -
QB, well, that's obvious. No real explanation needed here. I think FS/OLB might be interchangeable at this point. I think Koa Misi certainly could fill that 3rd LB role that Jason Taylor is current occupying. You can even have Misi play in obvious rushing situations over Cam Wake or whomever you get to replace Misi as a starter. I've been banging the drum for Courtney Upshaw all year long, and I'd really like to see this defense with Upshaw opposite Cam Wake. At some point, with Wake, you're either going to have to pay him BIG or replace him, which in my mind makes finding another pass-rushing OLB a high priority.
As for FS, personally, I think you have to take a look at guys like Dashon Goldson from San Fran, who's having a career year, Michael Griffin from Tennessee, or even Reggie Nelson from Cincinnati who has really revived his career this year. Plus, the next defensive coordinator might be able to get more out of Chris Clemons than Mike Nolan did. And in the Draft, I'm not sure I really see any options aside from Markelle Martin that are worth being drafted all that highly.
For the RT spot, if you can get a guy in the early middle rounds, why not pull the trigger? I'm intrigued by Josh Oglesby from Wisconsin. He's battled injuries throughout his career at UW, but he's been healthy this year and has been pretty impressive for the Badgers.
