30 yards means $500,000 for Ronnie

Very interesting tidbit I found about Sunday's game...

http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/columns/story?columnist=schefter_adam&page=10spot/10week17

Incentive to run: Miami might not be playing for anything Sunday against New England, but Dolphins running back Ronnie Brown sure is. Brown has a clause in his contract that calls for him to make a $500,000 incentive this season if he rushes for 750 yards, based on information obtained through NFL Players Association documents. Brown now is at 720 yards, well within range of his incentive. So if Brown can rush for a measly 30 yards Sunday, he would cash in on a cool half-million -- a nice present for a player who is scheduled to become a free agent but will have to wait for a new collective bargaining agreement before there is free agency. While teams have magic numbers on this final day of the regular season, so does Brown.

This regime has made cost cutting moves before preferring Berger over Grove. It will be interesting to see just how cheap they really are. If they cut Ronnie out of the picture on Sunday, I think the organization will stand to lose way more than $500,000, they stand to lose credibility and fans...

I remember Edgerrin James used to always get called selfish for wanting to hit his escalator clauses, but he wasn't trying for 750.

Ronnie is a goner regardless imo, but Ur right that would send quite a negative message to any potential FA's.

Fans won’t care at all if Ronnie misses out on $500,000. Won’t ruin anyone’s new year except Ronnie’s.

And if it takes the promise of $500k to make him run hard for once this season, then I don’t want to pay him a cent next season. Guy is talented, but he’s done nothing all year. He and Ricky are both playing their way out of town.

It isn't their fault. They have no interior offensive line to speak of out in front of them, and the plays that are being called aren't exactly creative.

I'll care...and what's more is that Ronnie saved the 2008 season with the Wildcat. Sparano has failed to inspire and utilize Ronnie correctly (mostly by screwing up the O-line). He's become an afterthought. Cameron, at least, inspired Ronnie to be great and designed plays for him. When is the last time you've seen Ronnie run a successful screen pass or even get split out to run a pattern. He's got amazing hands but this staff would rather keep him in to block. I don't know, IMO this regime has just used him up and spit him out. Shutting him out of this game would just be like a final insult to a former #2 overall superstar that never was.

So who runs the football for the Dolphins next season if both are gone?

You’re quite alone on that point.

And helped, with several other offensive players, to kill the 2010 season by being totally ineffective.

Sparano has failed to inspire and utilize Ronnie correctly (mostly by screwing up the O-line).

So… Sparano lets Ronnie run the Wildcat for 3 years, but he’s not using Ronnie correctly. O-kay.

Cameron, at least, inspired Ronnie to be great and designed plays for him.

Only after showing early favoritism to Jesse Chatman throughout training camp and the first couple of games of the 2007 season. You have selective memory of the Cam Cameron offense.

He’s got amazing hands but this staff would rather keep him in to block.

Perhaps the only fair and accurate criticism you’ve leveled in this thread. However, Henning isn’t alone. Linehan didn’t get Ronnie the ball, Mularkey didn’t get Ronnie the ball, and Cameron refused to give Ronnie the ball until he played like a Hall of Famer for six weeks (and admitted his mistake publicly, which was nice).

I don't know, IMO this regime has just used him up and spit him out. Shutting him out of this game would just be like a final insult to a former #2 overall superstar that never was.

I still can’t believe you actually wrote this in the same block paragraph in which you credited Ronnie for executing the Wildcat.

You don’t like Sparano, we get it. That doesn’t mean you have to invent facts to justify that.

Either two rookies, or one rookie and one free agent. 2011 free agency and the 2011 draft are well stocked with running backs. DeAngelo Williams and Ahmad Bradshaw can be obtained in free agency, while this is a good year for mid-round running backs (the Parcells tree’s favorite kind).

Agree with this Cameron pushed Ronnie and turned him into a good running back.... Brought in Jesse Chatman for competition.....
Thanks for bringing that back up

#1-I don't care that you don't think anyone cares whether I care or not!?!

#2-See misused and underutilized part of original thread...

#3-Yes, it doesn't take a genius to understand that the league has figured out how to stop Ronnie in the Wildcat after '08. You're just backing up my original statement IMO. Plus, now they don't even run motion across Ronnie anymore making it even more of a lamecat.

#4-It's called coaching. You know, getting the best out of your players by knowing which buttons to push. Chatman may have started 2 games tops but he still didn't outproduce Ronnie. However, good point. I did forget that was how Cameron did it.

#5-http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/players/7178/gamelog;_ylt=AjXJeHIcWiv7_hYpAemFPHn.uLYF?year=2007Again, I think you're just making my case for me...

#6-You've completely lost me...what facts am I inventing? Used him up and spit him out is exactly how I would categorize Ronnie's diminishing role with the wildcat and offense in general (if indeed that is what they do while keeping him from attaining his escalator clause).

BTW-sorry if I came off condescending in my reply. It took so long to write I didn't want to make the effort on a less offensive second draft. I think overall a lot of people will see what I am driving at. Perhaps I'm just stuck in my ways, but I think I nailed down what I wanted to express. Friends?

I agree with you 100%.

Also, whwnever the team is flat or starting to look like it might quit I see Ronnie to step up and play with heart. Give his all. He's a guy who CARES about playing hard and always fighting to win. If we dishonor guys like that it'll hurt my belief in rooting for this ownership... because anything contrived to keep Ronnie from getting his incentive would come from the top, since it's their wallet, not from the coaches... especially coaches desperate to win in order to keep their jobs.

You seriously don't think we can find another RB that can get us 750 yards?

Right now there's 26 other RBs in the NFL that can get us 750 yards...Including
Cedric Benson, who has over 1K yards. Guess how many times he's done it?
Once more than Ronnie has. Ronnie is just not that valueable.

This is a moot point. No way RB doesn't get 30 yards. He may have to carry the ball 16 times for it, but he'll do it.

Then how do you explain Ronnie's 3.7 yard average per rush
versus Ricky's 4.4 yard average per rush with the same offensive line
and offensive coordinator???

If it was only the offensive line their numbers would close to the same

Never said that..... I think Ronnie will be gone but Ricky will stay at a good price and definitely still wants to be here. Ronnie will want more than the Dolphins are willing to pay. My gut tells me they don't want him back so I'm not sure an offer will even be made. So yes I'm sure we can find a running back who can give us better production.
Ricky will be here next year though IMO.

Agree with this. Ronnie hasn't run hard all season. 750 yards should have been all but guaranteed if he played up to expectations. If he doesn't hit it, he'll have only himself to blame. Well, he could go give Henning a smack in the mouth too I suppose.

Henne is a big part of the reason the running game sucks................no one fears him, so they key on our backs. The difference in Henne over Pennington is teams feared Pennington under 25 yards because Pennington would make you pay. Running the ball was easier because they couldn't/wouldn't stack the box as much.

Henne......... they don't fear at all. Receiver's routinely run wide open and they are invisible.

To be honest, I don't think he has played well this year.
I know it's built into his contract , but its like we are rewarding his mediocrity.
If he was 100 yards away from the escalator clause we wouldn't even be talking about his potential bonus, because he likely wouldn't come close.
To hit 750 yards on the season it takes an average of 46.8 yards/game.
Hardly an impact player.

Now if he goes out and runs for 100+ yards tomorrow, he earns it. But his statline tomorrow will probably looked something like 12 carries for 48 yards.
