Actually, with Michael Brockers moving up the board and Tannehill being a complete wild card, that #8 spot could be that final one to have a top player available (outside tackle), so this "win" could prove quite significant.




Also, TBH, if I'm St Louis, the #8 spot is where I'd want to trade back to because I'd be looking for a franchise tackle for Bradford, and #8 is not only perfect for Riley Reiff but it's cheaper than Kalil at #2, and it also allows them to acquire draft picks and dump Jason Smith's $10 million salary in the process...... and it still might leave them in position to draft Brockers (with Jax already having 2 DTs and Carolina now drafting after us).

 

It really didn't matter if the Dolphins lost the coin flip or won it. With Ireland doing the selecting, there is no way he will do what is necessary to trade up and get RG3. I predict that he will use this pick to select another offensive or defensive lineman.

 

It matters. The Giants' defensive line helped them win 2 SBs over Brady. It matters greatly.
If we have a chance to do in Miami what Minnesota did with Williams & Williams, you take it IMO and let it become the strength & foundation of your defense.

The #8 spot might have Brockers, and that kid has the potential to be a game-changer, so I wouldn't be upset if we drafted a future elite DT for $12 million rather than sign Soliai for 40.0M, allowing us to use that savings toward Flynn or whomever. That would also allow us to potentially let Langford walk which saves us another 25.0M on top of it.


We need to pressure the QB. Period.
Would it be coming from the obvious DE position? No, but improved pressure is improved pressure and I'll take what I can get at this moment. We could then take a DE at the top of round 2 or perhaps trade up for one if needed. Brockers - Andre Branch would be a great beginning to a draft and would instantly set our Dline of the future (only leaving us with a need for Wake's heir).

Brockers-Odrick would make an outstanding & disruptive duo. 3 down players at that, allowing us to let Starks walk in 2013. Even more money saved. Maybe we draft another DT later on to give him a year to groom so that we'll have some inexpensive depth to ensure these other expensive players are expendable.

Brockers-Odrick allows us to dump all the confusion at DT and move on.

Actually.... Michael Brockers 1st, Andre Branch 2nd, and Bruce Irvin (as our future hybrid SOLB) 3rd sounds like a great start to the draft. Those 3 combined with Odrick & Wake (and Dansby & Burnett) would allow us to run an effective hybrid defense capable of switching up from 4-3 to 3-4 quite easily.

 

That's so un-Miami for the Dolphins to win something like this.

 

So basically you want the Dolphins to let go of two proven and productive defensive lineman and take a chance that Brockers will be a quality starter in the NFL. I personally prefer that the Dolphins retain Langford and Soliai, instead of taking a chance on a player who has not played a single down in the NFL.

A lot of players are drafted because they have the potential to be good players in the NFL. This so called potential often fails to materialize once these players actually get to the NFL. We already know that Langford and Soliai can play effectively in the NFL. Why the Dolphins would want to just let them go and then draft a defensive lineman with their first round draft pick makes no sense to me. In fact if the Dolphins do let both Langford and Soliai go in free agency. I see a big drop off on the defensive side of the ball next year for the Dolphins.

 

Fletcher Cox is a better prospect that Michael Brockers, IMO. I'm pushing big time for Miami to take Fletcher Cox with that pick, and people will know who he is when he blisters the Indy combine with his forty time.

 

My preference is that the Dolphins resign Langford and Soliai, but if they don't and they are determined to draft a defensive lineman in the first round. I think Devon Still is a far better selection than Cox or Brockers.
I do agree with you that Cox is a better prospect than Brockers. Brockers to me, is nothing but a poor man's Soliai.

 

yes, I would b/c you don't get anywhere by not taking chances, especially when that "chance" is a much better fit in a 43 with significantly more upside. Langford is a great 3-4 DE; I don't see him being a great 4-3 DT where we're going to need the position to be more disruptive and apply more pressure on the QB. Soliai would be great to keep, but you're gonna lose him at times in passing situations. So yes, I'll take a potentially ELITE 3 down DT over them and not think twice about it......

.......and now that you bring money into the equation, that becomes an even bigger yes. So you would rather spend $60+ million on 2 defensive players, only to have them be a part of a now massively expensive rotation with Odrick, Starks, and McDaniel than spend $12 million on an elite 3 down DT who has the potential to be THE GUY you build your defense around for the next 10 years? What?!

I'm going to be blunt, and I'm sorry about it, but this type of mentality will never win a SB. Being "effective" doesn't mean a hill of beans, especially now that we're going to be a 43. Since when, in a passing league, do we prioritize run stuffers over a franchise DT? Being "effective" gets you 8-8 +/- a win here and there.

The Giants would've watched the SB from the sidelines if they adopted this mentality. But no, they spent their 2010 first rounder on Jason Pierre Paul (who's comparable in talent & potential to Brockers) when they already had Tuck, Osi, and Mathias. Now tell me who's the best and most important player of that defense whom they can build it around for the next 10 years? :wink2:

I already gave the reasons.... but I'll do it one more time.

If you have the choice between Soliai & Langford vs Brockers (or any elite DT prospect), you take the elite prospect.
Why?
1. B/c we already have a 1st round 3-down stud developing in Odrick.
2. IT SAVES MONEY. Roughly $50 million in savings is enough reason all by itself w/o factoring in Brockers' elite ability and game-changing potential.
3. It's a passing league. Why do you want to spend franchise QB money on 2 DTs who are a liability vs the pass (especially with McDaniel & Starks rostered)?
4. Versatility. Brockers allows for more defensive versatility.
5. 3 down players open up roster spots.
6. Soliai & Langford aren't those "foundation" type players that you can look at and say, "This is a guy we can build around for the next 10 years in a 4-3 defense."
7. QB pressure. We need more of it. Overdoing the run support is pointless in a passing league. $50 million worth of over-doing it is insane.
8. We're not a 3-4 anymore so we don't need a huge stable of DTs (34 DEs). Langford is an ideal 3-4 DE, but inside at DT he won't generate the amount of pressure we'd need from the position, especially considering we have nothing at LDE.
9. Calais Campbell. Would you rather have Langford & Soliai over an elite impact defensive playmaker like Campbell?.... b/c that's what you're basically saying.

How would there be a "big" drop off when we still have Starks who is a good fit at DT, Odrick who is a stud in the making, and McDaniel? How many starting caliber DTs do you think we need in a 43? Do you think their $60 million in saved salary just disappears? I'd have no problem re-signing Soliai..... but the 2 of them is overkill. It's hoarding is what it is.

A 1st team SEC defensive tackle might get more respect if he played at LSU or UF, no.

Do you think he has as much upside at 4-3 tackle as he does 3-4 end?

 

Seeing that face announcing the 8th pick was hilarious to me.

 

I think he offers position versatility. He's a guy that can play the 5 technique in an odd front and the 3 and 2 technique in an even front. I think he will be able provide a pass rush and a push from the DT in the 4-3. He did have 14.5 TFLs and 4.5 sacks at MSU this past season. Plus, there are reports that he's going to time between a 4.6 and a 4.7 in the forty.

agree to disagree I think brokers is an awesome prospect, but getting the 8th spot as opposed to the 9th gives a better shot of grabbing a player that could drop, I don't think we need to draft another interior linemen, if our staff thinks we need one DT is arguably the deepest position in the draft this year, with that guy from mich state and the guy from texas being available in the 2nd and future picks, I think pass rush DE is also a deep class being able to grab someone like curry with our early second round pick. There are also plenty of online we can grab in 2-5 rounds that have a chance,

Drafting BPA at 8 might be the best thing for us whether claireborn Richardson Blackmon fall to us or Kirkpatrick for safety maybe all those players aren't available but still we have to go into this draft with that mentality

 

Not that I believe in curses, but Omar talks about 13 years of bad luck? Marino retired after the '99 season, so wouldn't we (according to Omar's 13 year curse) still have to get through 2012 as the last year of the curse?

We are off to a good start with winning the coin flip though, and have a lot of options/hope for a QB. The important thing is to make the RIGHT decision and get this team back to winning.

I am just not as high on Brockers as you seem to be. As I stated earlier, if the Dolphins are intent on taking a DL with the 8th pick in the draft, I think Still would be the better selection over Brocker.

The reality is that it really isn't going to matter much because I think if they keep the 8th pick, they will take an offensive lineman with this pick. If they trade down, I see them ending up with a player similar to Odrick in the late first round. While you seem to think Odrick is some kind of stud, I see him as a very ordinary defensive lineman in the NFL. I think Langford is far superior to Odrick and I would rather see the Dolphins trade Odrick and keep Langford.

Agree about the pick. Disagree about Lin. Even as a Heat fan, how can you NOT love the story of a guy coming form nowhere to at least be decent, and have a big impact on his individual team. Why the hate?

 

Well, he didn't defer so I doubt it will be a fist pump. I'm guessing a "head rub".

 

Brockers may very well be the BPA at 8 who drops. IMO he's grouped in with Claiborne & Blackmon and ahead of Kirkpatrick. I'd probably even put him higher on our list than Blackmon considering we have Marshall. Wes Bunting has him as the 5th highest graded prospect in the draft (regardless of position).


With all due respect, I'm not worried about how deep the class is at DT etc b/c a 2nd round DT isn't the same as a franchise DT who has the potential to become one of the best in the NFL. Richardson is a waste of a pick IMO compared to a 3 down franchise DT who will see more snaps and solidify one spot on our D for the next 10 years. IMO if you have a few core impact players on defense, you can use that as your foundation over the years, and as guys develop and become too expensive to sign (like we're seeing now), we still have that core player to constantly build around. Kirkpatrick wouldn't be bad, but I personally don't think he's as good of a prospect at FS as Brockers is at DT.

IMO there's only 2 dominant franchise-caliber defensive players in the top 10 of this draft. Claiborne & Brockers.

That's a bad idea.
They're different players. We're not going to be running a 3-4 with Langford at 34 end where he's best suited b/c of his size and length, so how exactly do you see him as a better 4-3 DT than Odrick?.... especially if you're all for re-signing Soliai.
Odrick had 6 sacks last year and is only going to get better. He's further ahead after 2 years than Langford was.
IMO Odrick's size & ability translates better as a 1 gap player than Langford b/c he has the quickness needed to be disruptive and the strength to hold his own vs the run, where as IMO Langford is a better 2 gap guy.

Langford on the other hand has only 7.5 sacks in 4 years and at 6'06 295 lbs doesn't seem like the guy you want lining up inside where he's no longer capable of using his length to his full advantage and might get washed out in run plays more often.



So, if you'd rather trade Odrick (which is a terrible idea considering the NFL developmental curve and the fact he was a 1st rounder for a reason), where is our inside pressure going to come from? I hope you're not thinking "Langford".

 

I am no pundit & we definitely have people on board who understand the draft
having said that, just for the sport
with Manning or without him, my picks in rounds 1-4 as of today would be:

1) Ryan Tannehill, QB, Texas A&M
2) C. Fleener, TE, Stanford
3) Malik Jackson, DE/DT, Tennessee
4) Peter Konz, C, Wisconsin

this draft, if it were possible/feasible, would give us a guarantee @ QB, a potential TE opposite Fasano, a pass rush & 4/3 option on defense & the possibility of playing Pouncey @ pulling guard

Tannehill is the kind of player Little is, but I'm not sure if I can predict him as a bonafide success the way I was adamant about Little, Gronkowski, or Barwin. Those 3, I would've bet my retirement on that's how certain I felt. However, I do feel good enough about Tanny that I'd risk taking him at 8.

I will say though, Tanny is probably in my top 3 of favorite prospects b/c of everything he embodies (not just physically), and that's one of the reasons I fell in love with those other guys. I get a similar feeling about Tanny as I do the aforementioned, but TBH I get it even more so with RG3. Griffin's probably this year's "Little" for me TBH. I wouldn't be shocked to see him have a better career than Luck, and I might even like him more. It's sad, but if he were white, I bet he gets more national consideration for the #1 pick, especially since he's been 6'02+ and 220 all along. If I were able to run the kind of offense I desire and had most of the pieces in place for it, I'd take Griffin over Luck. However, if I'm starting from bare bones, I'd probably be more inclined to take Luck and then fit the offense to him.

Brockers I'd actually have to see in interviews etc to get a true feel on whether or not he's my "Greg Little" b/c that's honestly where I get some of my strongest gut feelings---- from the stuff that happens when the play has stopped. He could go from Little to Gholston in a heartbeat if I don't like him when the play has stopped.

So RG3 as of now is my closest Greg Little. Believe it or not Bruce Irvin has been on my "Greg Little watch list" all year. A few years from now he's gonna make a team very happy they took a chance on him. Usually my Greg Little feeling is about a player who isn't a consensus can't miss prospect, so I always leave out guys like Coby Fleener, Dwayne Allen, or Richardson. I get the "Little" feeling about DeCastro in a big way, but he's almost too obvious.

 

with Manning or without him, I'd still pick Ryan Tannehill, QB, Texas A&M @ 8
then proceed to draft 2,3,4 as suggested, if possible

Odrick will benefit as much as anyone with the switch to 4-3a imo.

 

Well, I look at this as having the 6 overall as Luck and RG are coming off of the board #1 and #2, so who are the top 5 players after those two?

 

Also have to take into account the youth of Brockers in the evaluation and the statement from Todd that he is a top 10 prospect, dude was born in the nineties lol..he's one of the youngest players in the draft at 6'6 over three hundred lbs, there's room to grow on a very large, active strong body..
