Just some food for thought here. Trying to get my mind off all the ugliness.
New coaches,new FO personnel,new scouting staff,significant player turnover,etc.
Who do you like for the next GM? Coaches? Free Agents? Draft Picks in 2014?
I know their are probably better candidates for GM but I like Eric Mangini. He is being lauded in San Fran where he is an offensive consultant. He holds a
special place in my heart for turning in Belichick for Spygate.
I am a defense first guy but I also love what teams do with the hurry up offense.
My choice for head coach would be either Mark Dantonio or Gus Malzahn.
Dantonio is Michigan State's HC. MSU's defense is just plain dominant,
Gus Malahn(Auburn HC) literally wrote the book on the hurry up offense.http://www.amazon.com/The-Hurry-Up-No-Huddle-Offensive-Philosophy/dp/1585186546
Best Case: Dantonio is made HC and he brings Narduzzi with him to be DC. Malzahn is given an obscene amount of money to be OC.(This is a pipe dream)
Players:
Dolphin free agents: I would sign Soliai and Clemons. The Incognito thing is tragic. We may have received a nice comp pick for him if he had not just made himself anathema.
Dolphin players cut or traded:
Trade Matt Moore. His salary is too high, but there might be a team out there willing to give up a pick. I think this would clear about 4 mil in cap space.
Trade Daniel Thomas and Olivier Vernon. Nothing against Vernon. He is good, in fact, if he somehow finds a way to get double digit sacks this year, his value could skyrocket. Jordan needs to start, and the Dolphins need to rebuild their offense. Vikings are letting Jared Allen walk and I doubt if Toby Gerhart returns. He would probably go anywhere where he doesn't have to play behind Peterson. They will be very thin at both positions. If Vernon does get double digit sacks this year we may be able to get their high 2nd for both players, assuming they don't draft Clowney.
Release: Dmitri Patterson, Nate Garner,Vaughn Martin,Bryant McKinnie........Grimes and Patterson are both going to be 31 by next camp and they both have durability issues. I just can;t see paying these guys 6 mil a peice next year, too risky. Verner is still a pup and worth the fat contract.
2014 Free Agency: I'd Target Jared Veldheer OT.......Jon Asamoah OG........Alterraun Verner CB.......Jacoby Ford WR.....Lawrence Sidbury DE....Blaine Gabbert QB(I expect him
to be released.) I think he would make a good clipboard holder.
Draft:
1st............Cameron Erving OT........Best in class IMO
2nd............Lache Seastrunk RB.......Probably need a trade up.
2nd...........trade down add a 4th&5th.....Josue Matias OG
3rd...........trade down add a 4th......Jimmy Garopollo QB....Jimmy calls his own plays. Perfect QB for the hurryup.
4th............Pierre Desir DB
4th............Max Bullough LB
4th............Gabe Ikard C/OG
5th............Caraun Reid DT
5th............Trey Millard...FB
6th............Zach Kerr DT
7th............Marcus Williams DB
7th............Kevin Graf OT
FA..............David Fluellen RB
I was hoping the Dolphins could find a developmental WR; a guy with speed that could possibly replace Wallace in 2015, but I got nothing. Suggestions??
All of these guys are known for either impeccable character, leadership,or extreme brilliance. Three of them are first team academic all-americans and Reid
is from Princeton.
Roster:
QB........Tannehill,Garopollo,Gabbert
RB........Seastrunk,Miller,Thigpen,David Fluellen
FB.........Trey Millard
TE.........Clay,Simms,Egnew
WR........Hartline,Gibson,Wallace,Matthews,Ford
OT........Veldheer,Erving,Graf
C/OG.....Pouncey,Matias,Asamoah,Dallas Thomas,Gabe Ikard
DT.......Soliai,Odrick,Reid,Kerr
DE........Wake,Jordan,Shelby,Sidbury
LB.........Misi,Ellerbe,Bullough,Wheeler,Trusnik,Jenkins
S.........Jones,Clemons,Marcus Williams,Wilson
CB........Verner,Patterson,Taylor,Will Davis,RJ Stanford

Nice job. I was thinking along the same lines. But, I was thinking of going after Baylor's offense, get that OC and draft young O players to implement that. Boost up the Oline with vets. Malzahn would be great.
Or, alternatively, if we go back to pro style, go after Coughlin for GM. -
We can clear over 25 mil by releasing/trading Patterson, Moore, Misi, Wheeler & Hartline. All those guys are pretty much expendable. You free up all that money combined with the cap space we'll already have, that's more than enough to not only re-sign Soliai, Starks, even Grimes, but also to go after Sam Shields and some OL help.
-
I think he will be a #3 somewhere next year. Who knows, with the pressure off for a couple years, he may eventually become a good #2.
He is a brilliant guy who is also a good athlete when healthy.
He will probably come cheap. I like him for a #3, but only a #3. -
i stopped reading at malzhan. i used to live in arkansas when he was the top high school head coach in the country. i have wanted him to coach either the michigan wolverines or the miami dolphins for a very long time. the guy is a genius!!! he has won literally everywhere he has gone....u of arkansas, tulsa, won national title as cam newton's college o-coordinator, and now has auburn a top 7 team as head coach. the dude makes quarterbacks. he is the next sean payton...maybe better.

I'm kind of wary of college coaches.
-
But we're getting ahead of ourselves with coaches, much like how Ross did in 2011. Fire Ireland first. Fire Aponte second. Fire Philbin third. Hire a new GM fourth. Let the GM hire a new head coach and a new capologist who isn't a Napoleon.Frumundah Finnatic, Tone_E, gunn34 and 2 others like this. -
No to Mangini. Not sure he has a good eye for talent, and there are bad stories about his style with the Browns. To many other good candidates.
Shaw is a hot name but he seems content at Stanford. -
Greg Roman(San Fran's OC) is who I wanted originally for HC before Philbin came in. Has alot of experience in the NFL. Would be interesting to see what he can as a HC.
-
Actually now, after the loss to the Buccaneers, I may really want to just totally blow this team up from top to bottom.
I would see what Tannehill and Pouncey were worth on the open market next March.
If I could get a 1st for Tannehill and a late 1st and an additional pick or player for Pouncey, I would probably pull the trigger and let the new GM and coach acquire their own people to run their new system.
Pouncey is an all-pro but if you are going for a squeaky clean new image, he might not be the guy to lead your new OL.
I think either Cleveland or Arizona may be interested in Tannehill, but I'm not at all sure what kind of trade value he would TRULY have next year.
The 49ers might be interested in the NFL's best center, and they again have an abundance of draft picks. If they offered their 1st and 2nd, or even their 1st and a 3rd and 4th, I would trade Pouncey.
If the Dolphins continue to lose this whole thing could come tumbling down. Erase the Ireland legacy.TooGoodForDez likes this. -

Ryan Tannehill is the first QB we've had in 15 god damn years who actually resembles a franchise QB and you want to trade him? Give me a break.
Griese's Glasses, Fin D, dolfan22 and 1 other person like this. -
I would try to acquire Barrett Jones from the Rams sometime during the offseason, maybe a draft day trade of some kind involving a trade down and a player. I was surprised they drafted him last year, they have several guys with long term deals ahead of him. He is 3rd string. It might not take a whole lot to pry him away.
I am also of the opinion that Gabe Ikard is going to be an absolute steal in this year's draft. Most having him going in the 5th or 6th round right now. I expect he will go in the 4th.
I think he is a very good OL on an otherwise poor line. Now, I would have two academic all americans with shiny white character competing for the center position. If Jones and Ikard look to raw a vet could be signed to one year deal, perhaps Goodwin himself. Both Jones and Ikard also play OG.
With the late 1st round pick we could be looking at Jace Amaro,or a DL,or Lache Seastrunk. Dolphins could have new coaches running a base 3-4; perhaps Rashede Hageman would be an excellent 5-technique prospect.
Or if soliai walks, NT could be an area of great need.
If the Dolphins are going to truly rebuild, difficult decisions will have to made. Sacrifices will have to made to lay the foundation for a new culture.
I love Pouncey. He is a beast and I personally don't care if he hangs out with hoods, but these kinds of things are going to be considered by the new administration. You can count on it. -
Really no one has wondered how we're getting 12 draft picks in this scenario? As of now, the Dolphins have one pick in every round with a conditional pick for Bryant McKennie. I'm going to go ahead and assume the conditional pick is based on playing time. Since he's going to play out the rest of the season, I'm going to bet it's a 6th (probably a 7th with less playing time). So that leaves the Dolphins with 6 picks. How exactly do we double that?
I think it's going to be pretty hard to trade up to get a 2nd and then trade back in the 2nd without giving up a future pick (which is a profoundly terrible idea). -
-
No, I re-checked it, all picks are accounted for in the post. The trade-up thing for Seastrunk was a maybe. He may very well slide to the early 2nd. -

Open the checkbook for David Shaw. What he does from a talent evaluation and character evaluation standpoint at a school like Stanford is seriously impressive. He cannot bring in players like they can at Bama or FSU or OSU or Oregon because of the academic standards, yet he has that team ready to play each and every week. Everyone knows what Stanford does and will do in a game on offense. Yet no one can stop it, minus that head scratching loss to Utah.
Nasty, smash mouth, power offense and a nasty, physical, explosive defense. He can get those kind of players to Stanford than he sure as hell could get those kind of players in the NFL. -
-
-

-
-
You misinterpret the concept of final say with the inability to be on the same page. -
Shaw would not go out and actually sign players, but he would have a say in who the players are that the team ends up with. -
-
Totally unnecessary, unwarranted, foolish, risky. High draft picks do not equal winning seasons, exhibit A: Jake Long. -

It's easier to come up with Head Coach candidates than it is General Manager candidates. The guys I probably favor the most include Art Briles (wishful thinking, doubt he's interested), Gus Malzahn, Kevin Sumlin, David Shaw and Jay Gruden. All are offensive guys and I think that fits in with what Steve Ross really wants in Miami. All have head coaching experience which I believe is important, and I think Miami will end up believing to be important.
Usually, your General Manager is going to picked from a list of assistants and personnel directors, and it's very difficult to separate the success and failures they had there from the success and failures of the General Manager above them.
You just end up picking out guys that are high profile, for one reason or another. People have been talking about Eric DeCosta for years and he keeps insisting on staying in Baltimore which I think makes people talk about him even more. Omar Khan is high profile only because supposedly Bill Cowher thinks he should be his GM if he does come back to football.
I think Nick Caserio is a strong candidate because of his background at New England. He was the WRs Coach during their record-breaking year with Moss, Welker and Stallworth all playing like heroes. He started off as a personnel assistant with NE in 2001, became an offensive coaching assistant in 2002, moved back to the personnel side as an area scout in 2003, became Director of Pro Personnel 2004 to 2006 (think: Corey Dillon, Keith Traylor, Rodney Harrison, Rosevelt Colvin, Junior Seau), became the WR Coach in 2007 during the record breaking 18-1 year, moved back to the personnel side as Director of Player Personnel in 2008. Scott Pioli left one year later and the Patriots did not replace him. Caserio just took a larger hand in what was going on.
Standout draft picks from 2009 to 2013 include Sebastian Vollmer (late 2nd), Myron Pryor (6th), Julian Edelman (7th), Devin McCourty (late 1st), Rob Gronkowski (early 2nd), Brandon Spikes (late 2nd), Aaron Hernandez (4th), Brandon Deaderick (7th), Nate Solder (mid 1st), Shane Vereen (late 2nd), Stevan Ridley (3rd), Marcus Cannon (5th), Chandler Jones (late 1st) and Alfonzo Dennard (6th).
Some picks that I don't think you can quite refer to as successes or failures relative to price tag include Dont'a Hightower (late 1st) and Patrick Chung (early 2nd).
On the other hand I think you can say that the following were busts: Tavon Wilson (2nd), Taylor Price (3rd), Jake Bequette (3rd), Ras-I Dowling (early 2nd), Darius Butler (2nd), Ron Brace (2nd), Brandon Tate (3rd), Tyrone McKenzie (3rd), Rich Ohrnberger (4th), Jermaine Cunningham (late 2nd).
It's probably a bit early to evaluate the 2013 draft class. Howveer, they're getting strong involvement from rookies. Standouts include Chris Jones (6 sacks), Joe Vellano, Logan Ryan, Duron Harmon, Aaron Dobson and Kenbrell Thompkins. They've gotten a total of 2,374 snaps out of their rookies. Miami has gotten a total of 453 snaps out of rookies.
Having worked on both the coaching staff and the personnel side for the entire time that New England has been a good football team, I think he's probably had maximum exposure to what many deem The Patriot Way. A lot of coaches shake off that tree thinking they know it but in reality they don't because they've only had exposure to certain things. Caserio's had exposure to pretty much all of it, including the team's habit of sending present picks for better future picks (which I think is a highly advantageous strategy).
A guy from the Patriots wouldn't necessarily be good news for the media policies of course, but that's something you need to grill him on in interview to find out how he really feels about that stuff. -
I am half expecting the Dolphins to make 4-5 great moves in the off season but counter it by getting rid of 2-3 good players. Each time they take a step forward, they take two back.

Name a better center............
And even if think you can, name one Pouncey's age or younger........
And even if you think you can do that, name one Pouncey's caliber and age that has a contract anywhere near Pouncey's next year.........
Pouncey is no Reggie White, but he may very well join him in the HOF some day.
Frankly, I still think he may be even a better OG than center.
How can you doubt his value?
If he were actually going to be arrested, it would have happened by now.
No man, if the next GM wanted to move him to facilitate a new culture, he could do so easily, and with ample compensation. -
-
I would love to have Jace Amaro, but that pick seems a little luxurious for a team that will probably be in a significant transition phase.
As far as QB.....when I blow out the candles, it's all about Coach Gus Malzahn and QB Jimmy Garopollo. Tannehill just isn't a quick thinking guy. I'm not saying he isn't intelligent, just saying he doesn't react to the field situations quick enough. Not saying Tannehill isn't going to be a good QB, I just think if Garopollo can stay healthy in the NFL, he will be great.
