Or, alternatively, if we go back to pro style, go after Coughlin for GM.

 

We can clear over 25 mil by releasing/trading Patterson, Moore, Misi, Wheeler & Hartline. All those guys are pretty much expendable. You free up all that money combined with the cap space we'll already have, that's more than enough to not only re-sign Soliai, Starks, even Grimes, but also to go after Sam Shields and some OL help.

i stopped reading at malzhan. i used to live in arkansas when he was the top high school head coach in the country. i have wanted him to coach either the michigan wolverines or the miami dolphins for a very long time. the guy is a genius!!! he has won literally everywhere he has gone....u of arkansas, tulsa, won national title as cam newton's college o-coordinator, and now has auburn a top 7 team as head coach. the dude makes quarterbacks. he is the next sean payton...maybe better.

There are college coaches and then there are coaches who happen to work for a college at the moment. Nick Saban is a college coach; Jim Harbaugh is a coach who happened to work for a college. I think Art Briles may be the former and David Shaw may be the latter.

But we're getting ahead of ourselves with coaches, much like how Ross did in 2011. Fire Ireland first. Fire Aponte second. Fire Philbin third. Hire a new GM fourth. Let the GM hire a new head coach and a new capologist who isn't a Napoleon.

 

No to Mangini. Not sure he has a good eye for talent, and there are bad stories about his style with the Browns. To many other good candidates.

Shaw is a hot name but he seems content at Stanford.

 

Greg Roman(San Fran's OC) is who I wanted originally for HC before Philbin came in. Has alot of experience in the NFL. Would be interesting to see what he can as a HC.

Really no one has wondered how we're getting 12 draft picks in this scenario? As of now, the Dolphins have one pick in every round with a conditional pick for Bryant McKennie. I'm going to go ahead and assume the conditional pick is based on playing time. Since he's going to play out the rest of the season, I'm going to bet it's a 6th (probably a 7th with less playing time). So that leaves the Dolphins with 6 picks. How exactly do we double that?

I think it's going to be pretty hard to trade up to get a 2nd and then trade back in the 2nd without giving up a future pick (which is a profoundly terrible idea).

GARDENHEAD is correct. Daniel Thomas has no trade value. I'm not even sure he would get interest from other teams if he were released immediately, and there are teams that need RB help badly.

 

Open the checkbook for David Shaw. What he does from a talent evaluation and character evaluation standpoint at a school like Stanford is seriously impressive. He cannot bring in players like they can at Bama or FSU or OSU or Oregon because of the academic standards, yet he has that team ready to play each and every week. Everyone knows what Stanford does and will do in a game on offense. Yet no one can stop it, minus that head scratching loss to Utah.

Nasty, smash mouth, power offense and a nasty, physical, explosive defense. He can get those kind of players to Stanford than he sure as hell could get those kind of players in the NFL.

 

David Shaw would not be a general manager in the NFL. It wouldn't be his job to get certain kinds of players, or any kind of player.

 

I am pretty sure the HC has influence with the GM. The GM does not just toss players at the HC and say good luck.

 

You're still incorrectly attributing powers to the head coach that he does not have. If a GM has final say, then the head coach takes whatever the GM gives him.

 

You think Belicheck or Peyton just "get" players from their GM? Ya the GM is involved with writing checks and ultimately his name is on the contracts, but I have a have a hard time believing that if we start over, that the GM and HC would not be 100% on the same page.

I think you misinterpret the point I was trying make. If we are starting over, with a coach who runs a certain style of football on both sides of the ball, then it is the GM's responsibility to get the players to make that happen. It is of my opinion that the coach and his staff would likely identify the players they want to make their system work, and it is up to the GM to get those players or similar.

Shaw would not go out and actually sign players, but he would have a say in who the players are that the team ends up with.

It's easier to come up with Head Coach candidates than it is General Manager candidates. The guys I probably favor the most include Art Briles (wishful thinking, doubt he's interested), Gus Malzahn, Kevin Sumlin, David Shaw and Jay Gruden. All are offensive guys and I think that fits in with what Steve Ross really wants in Miami. All have head coaching experience which I believe is important, and I think Miami will end up believing to be important.

Usually, your General Manager is going to picked from a list of assistants and personnel directors, and it's very difficult to separate the success and failures they had there from the success and failures of the General Manager above them.

You just end up picking out guys that are high profile, for one reason or another. People have been talking about Eric DeCosta for years and he keeps insisting on staying in Baltimore which I think makes people talk about him even more. Omar Khan is high profile only because supposedly Bill Cowher thinks he should be his GM if he does come back to football.

I think Nick Caserio is a strong candidate because of his background at New England. He was the WRs Coach during their record-breaking year with Moss, Welker and Stallworth all playing like heroes. He started off as a personnel assistant with NE in 2001, became an offensive coaching assistant in 2002, moved back to the personnel side as an area scout in 2003, became Director of Pro Personnel 2004 to 2006 (think: Corey Dillon, Keith Traylor, Rodney Harrison, Rosevelt Colvin, Junior Seau), became the WR Coach in 2007 during the record breaking 18-1 year, moved back to the personnel side as Director of Player Personnel in 2008. Scott Pioli left one year later and the Patriots did not replace him. Caserio just took a larger hand in what was going on.

Standout draft picks from 2009 to 2013 include Sebastian Vollmer (late 2nd), Myron Pryor (6th), Julian Edelman (7th), Devin McCourty (late 1st), Rob Gronkowski (early 2nd), Brandon Spikes (late 2nd), Aaron Hernandez (4th), Brandon Deaderick (7th), Nate Solder (mid 1st), Shane Vereen (late 2nd), Stevan Ridley (3rd), Marcus Cannon (5th), Chandler Jones (late 1st) and Alfonzo Dennard (6th).

Some picks that I don't think you can quite refer to as successes or failures relative to price tag include Dont'a Hightower (late 1st) and Patrick Chung (early 2nd).

On the other hand I think you can say that the following were busts: Tavon Wilson (2nd), Taylor Price (3rd), Jake Bequette (3rd), Ras-I Dowling (early 2nd), Darius Butler (2nd), Ron Brace (2nd), Brandon Tate (3rd), Tyrone McKenzie (3rd), Rich Ohrnberger (4th), Jermaine Cunningham (late 2nd).

It's probably a bit early to evaluate the 2013 draft class. Howveer, they're getting strong involvement from rookies. Standouts include Chris Jones (6 sacks), Joe Vellano, Logan Ryan, Duron Harmon, Aaron Dobson and Kenbrell Thompkins. They've gotten a total of 2,374 snaps out of their rookies. Miami has gotten a total of 453 snaps out of rookies.

Having worked on both the coaching staff and the personnel side for the entire time that New England has been a good football team, I think he's probably had maximum exposure to what many deem The Patriot Way. A lot of coaches shake off that tree thinking they know it but in reality they don't because they've only had exposure to certain things. Caserio's had exposure to pretty much all of it, including the team's habit of sending present picks for better future picks (which I think is a highly advantageous strategy).

A guy from the Patriots wouldn't necessarily be good news for the media policies of course, but that's something you need to grill him on in interview to find out how he really feels about that stuff.

 

I am half expecting the Dolphins to make 4-5 great moves in the off season but counter it by getting rid of 2-3 good players. Each time they take a step forward, they take two back.

 

I think if you can follow the act that is Harbaugh, and continue the identity with no drop off, and play as tough as they do, then I'll take conservative all day, I never wanted to be some spread offense..defense..defense..defense..I love how that team plays ball.

 

I think you got it spot on on almost the entire offseason, it would be an absolute win if this is what the offseason looked like next year. While I wouldn't mind if Brian Hartline and Pouncey and Wallace are on the team next year, I don't think there is anyone who is "untouchable" on a 7-9 team, so players that fans are "attached" to can be moved - Brian Hartline, Pouncey, Vernon, Patterson and Yes Tannehill ! Some people would say how can you not make Tannehill untouchable....Well I just think the next GM may have a system he wants to put in place and has a coach and QB who can succeed in that particular system and I would be willing to give the new GM benefit of the doubt. Tannehill hasn't in 2 years shown he is a "Franchise" QB. Could it be a sophomore slump, sure, but no one wants to see their "Franchise" QB regress in the 2nd year, his 13td compared to 18 Turnovers is indefensible, he has improved on 3rd down efficiency at 59% which is encouraging but his 40% comp percentage on balls thrown 11+ yards makes me really question his mid range to deep ball accuracy but I can't help but think MIKE WALLACE bears a bit of the responsibility for that ugly number. 4th Quarter only 2 TD compared to 5 int. He only has 1 TD of 20+ yards. I don't think anyone is saying all is lost if he is retained by next GM but I don't think it's the end of the world if he is moved either. I also think a "franchise" Tight End would be nice to find in the top 4 rounds, wouldn't mind if one is drafted. I don't share the same enthusiasm for Charles Clay when a Vernon Davis, Gronkowski, Julian Thomas, Jason Witten "type" might be passed up on in the draft. It's been a long time since we had a Pro Bowl tight end, I don't see Clay as a pro bowl caliber player. But Philbinfan's plan would be completely welcomed.
