Teams look to get the best players and don't mind paying top dollar to get them. Marshall and Dansby were very good additions to the team. Shouldn't coaching be looked at the same way????? Seriously. Miami has a coaching staff that was built on cronyism. For those who don't know what that means, it means that they brought in their friends. Not necessarily "the best coaches available." Does anyone realize this? Or have a problem with it? Because I do. I have a BIG problem with it. They stuck with Bonamego for this long. Why? Because they didn't want to fire their friend. They allowed this area of the team to suffer for 3 years. Now the focus shifts to Dan Henning, who by the way if you didn't know is Bill Parcells GOOD friend.
To summarize, we don't have "the best available". We have "the best friends".
EDIT: Mike Nolan is the only exception. He falls under the category of best available. But I'm sure he and Parcells are friends.

I actually think you have a point here.
But I'll counter and say:
* where in the NFL is cronyism NOT employed?
* is that necessarily a bad thing?
Look at Bill Belichick. He always gets his own guys, and they tend to work pretty well for him - enough so that they get pilfered for promotions/HC jobs almost annually. :up:Merauder and unluckyluciano like this. -
The person who is now Miami's special teams coordinator worked at the University of New Haven with Sparano. THE UNIVERSITY OF NEW HAVEN!!!!!! Did anyone know they had a football team before Sparano arrived? I'm sure Rizzi is one of the BEST available. I don't know about everyone else but I'm MUCH more confident in Miami's special teams now!!!!

I'll send you a box of chocolates after he's fired, so you feel better. adam you can have a box too.

I know you're trying to offend me and I don't appreciate it. Next time stay off my thread if you don't plan to CONTRIBUTE to it at all. I brought up a valid point. How about getting off your high horse, and taking your condescending BS somewhere else? What do you think about that? Thanks.

Not to mention how the team continues to get players from Dallas somehow every year. It's a little odd. Could it be that Parcells and Sparano still have buddies in Dallas? They HOOKED US UP with guys like Ayodele, Bobby Carpenter (!!!!!!!!!!) who else? Yeah...this cronyism thing is really working out.

His point is that half the league is Kevin Bacon'd from Parcells. People develop their own systems, their own personnel. People who know each other work better together.
They fire people when units fail.
The defense failed last year, they fired the D coordinator
The ST failed this year (and has done below average the prior 2), they fired the coach going into the bye.
I don't understand what you're upset about... I want a coach who has assistants under him he is comfortable with. I don't want a coach who brings in talent, but can't lead them because they don't get along. -
-
EDIT: Yeah they did fire the D coordinator last year. Paul P was a good friend of Sparanos. Paul worked right down the road at Syracuse. Bonamego now this year. Cronyism works, as you can see. -

And man... you need to calm down, take a breather. Just because people don't agree with you doesn't mean they're attacking you. If my post came off that way then I'm sorry. I just really don't see your argument, because you don't have any facts to back up that they have passed up on people vastly superior to failing coaching positions.Boik14 likes this. -
I suppose there was no need for the Patriots to hire Belichek, he's just a Parcells "crony". Sean Payton too. Todd Haley. Tom Coughlin. Al Groh. Romeo Crennel. Eric Mangini. Parcells "cronies", all of them. The implication that Parcells doesn't hire good people is laughable. His assistants' successes are rivaled by only Bill Walsh, in NFL HISTORY. Your OP wreaks of ignorance and when facts are thrown in your face, you attack the messenger. So go ahead, keep talking outta your hind parts, I won't dare try to correct you anymore. But IMO you should less talking and more listening, no offense ., Clipse and BlameItOnTheHenne like this. -

Name coaches who were available, not the same way Bill Cowher is "available" every year, name some coaches who were available in 2008, that got an NFL job, and are doing better than the people we have right now.

To be fair telling someone you'll send them a box of chocolates because they disagree with you isn't exactly taking the high road is it? How exactly are people supposed to respond to that? Or are they not, and they should never dare respond? Would you prefer if we sent you you some chocolates if he wasn't fired? Do we really need this? Seriously?
To be honest, most things in life involve who you know. That's life. Everywhere. Hell, 25% of the people in charge of companies were helped in their climb by people they know. Who else can you convince to give you a chance sometimes? If you feel this strongly about it in football circles, then the political arena and generally most organizations should likely draw your ire as well. People getting chances because of who they know is a fact of life.
It's been legally accepted in government since the days of Andrew Jackson. -
I thought we already tried going with the best available coaches in Saban and Cameron and that didn't work out very good.
Any coach we get is naturally going to hire coaches he is familiar with. Even if we hired Cowher or Gruden chances are they fill their staff with people they know and have worked with and not with the popular choice. -

Lost in all this is GM's go after HC's who buy in to their philosophy and HC's go after AC's who buy in to their philosophy. Would you really expect that they would hire someone they don't know or have trust in? Bono's ST #'s took a nice jump in 09 from 08. Not giving him a pass but the #'s were good enough that they had to be thinking they were headed in the right direction.
Are you saying they should have hired a bunch of coaches with different philosophies? It's done wonders for Mike Martz's career. -
everyone has a job to do & must contribute in a competitive way or move on

The biggest problem with the "cronyism" is being loyal to a friend instead of making a clear upgrade.
Case in point, Bobby April, one of the best ST coaches in the biz suddenly becomes available. We have a fairly obvious need for improved special teams, but we don't even call the guy.
Now we end up firing Bono anyway, with no real suitable repalcementMerauder likes this. -
As others have said, cronyism is rampant throughout the league. Kansas City is the latest example with Scott Pioli hiring Weiss and Crennel. But, they fired Bonamego and let Paul P. go last year.
It doesn't seem as though they're keeping guys longer than they should. While special teams was a concern, it was never this bad until this season. I thought the last two years were ok. Not great, but not as bad as this. And when it became painfully obvious, they made a switch. Kudos to them. -
Right or wrong ROSS is going to change this. He has to let them mess up enough and by earlier this year saying he expected a SUPERBOWL from Miami he set the staff up for failure so he could move them out after the season saying they failed to meet the expectations set for this team.
We will suffer because of it as well. Unless somehow he manages to get Bill Cowher to coach I see him brining in his * Friends * who he trusts and lets them screw the team over for a few years in hopes of lightning striking.. I can hear it now.. We are not far away fans we will get there.. (Prices need to go up just a little though) -
The argument for Dan Henning not being the best available...Is what? Who else was on the market at the time? Of those people, who fit those specific philosophical patterns?
When Tony Sparano took over as OC in Dallas, he ran a balanced, ball-control offense with heavy emphasis on the two-TE set and a two-headed runningback attack. Dan Henning both historically, and in practice in Miami fulfills all those specifics to a degree better than most if not all of offensive coordinators in the league.adamprez2003 and Stringer Bell like this. -

Were fans we dont look 4 years down the line, nor do we care we want to win NOW and when people say you cant do that I simply say look around the entire sports sector teams that WANT to win make it happen.
The Yankees bring in the big guns, the Phillies are now doing it, the Jets SUCKED hard for years than in one season they became a top 3 defense and legit contender (though I still hate them).. The Heat in one offseason are STACKED and posed to become a team for the history books.
We had options from the start of the offseason last year to address all our needs. We decided to continue to use what we had KNOWING our issues. I blame that 100% on the front office.
They knew they were going to have a hard time this year and jobs could be on the line. They addressed a few positions on the team but neglected MANY of those needs trying to place journeymen into those positions instead of studs.
You reap what you sow and this barn is smelling alot like shiet.. If they get fired so be it.. We deserve better. -
