a controversial fix:
1) would begin w/ the offensive line, if able to play come game time, I would start: Long - Incognito - Grove - Thomas - Carey
2) if the IceMan could not lead us to @ least two victories by game four, I'd bench him in favor of Pennington in game five
3) would replace Smith w/ Will Allen & Clemons w/ Nolan Caroll or Reshad Jones immediately
4) continue to coach up Special Teams as much as possible
5) would invite the Big Tuna to observe football operations really up close & personal, then have an inspirational/motivational talk with the team about urgency, consistency & aggression. After the team talk, I'd like to see a side bar with the coaching cadre & Bill Parcells that would essentially put all their jobs on the line based on the outcome of this season. it is what it is... no more excuses
it w/ an ugly game & we have serious concerns
p.s. Run Ricky Run!

2 fixes I see...
#1 Yank S. Smith as soon as W Allen is healthy.
#2 Start Culver at FS in front of Clemons.pocoloco, RickyBobby, TheAnswer385 and 1 other person like this. -
perhaps smith will move to safety in the near future.

I absolutely agree w/ the need for adjustments in the secondary, however, it wouldn't be my first concern, it would be the second fix.
got to get the offensive line right by the opener. what was our strongest unit has become a work in progress & this is not a good thing. they set the pace & attitude of the game, as go the big guys up front, so goes the season. they've played like the Flipper-Five, nothing Orca about this bunch so far...
if its not broken don't fix it: Long - Incognito - Grove - Thomas - Carey -

time for Bill to have a serious talk w/ the boys & make the appropriate changes
just do it & do it now
Game-One is an opportunity to start the season on the right foot

Biggest sophomore slump ever @ Smith.
-
don't believe Smith is fixable in 2010
but we have the fixes for both his corner & the FS on the current roster
our front seven (once rolling) should take some pressure off the secondary -
I will admit that S.S. hasn't looked good this preseason, but I will also play devil's advocate and say that the long pass he got beat on to Hurd last night was a perfectly placed throw and he was with Hurd the whole route. The pass was placed picture perfect into the outstretched arms of Hurd, and not many CBs in this league can defend a pass like that.

With Sapp being brought in it gives us some depth at the nickle back (people are underestimating this pick-up), which will allow for Allen and Smith to rotate heavily at the CB2 spot. Sapp will alleviate the need for Allen to play a lot of Nickle Back and allow him to step into the CB2 spot more often.
V.D. has looked very solid at times in the preseason, and he is our CB1 for years to come. If S.S. or W.A. can step up (hopefully S.S. because he is young) and play a solid CB2, we will have a nice set of CBs with very good depth at the position including the nickleback.Eop05 likes this. -
My question is where was the safety on that Sam Hurd touchdown?
-
Sean Smith can not start. Period. After Davis all CBs are equal. Give me Jason Allen until Will Allen can/if he can return. I haven't seen every snap this preseason but the TD to R. White was a mix of decent coverage with no safety help and a perfect throw. Also it seems like either the safety is never in place or we just prefer to single cover the other teams #1.
Was it just me or did Smith look like a 3 year old trying to catch a foam ball where they just kind of put their hands up, close their eyes, and really have no chance of catching it on that TD pass last night... It's cute when it's a small child, but not your #2 corner in the NFL.
I'm not worried about anything right now except Smith and Clemons. -
Wow, if we lose the Bills game, I may have to stay away from this forum for a couple weeks.

I thought the season started out 0-0? Am I missing something, have we lost games that count yet? The negativity here is really getting silly when its this high over the preseason.

It's just concern. I really don't think he's getting any better. I think he's getting worse and with every day he loses more and more confidence it seems.
"Raw" guys usually progress. I just don't see it with him.
Therefore, as soon as Will Allen comes back, I'd like to see him in there. Make Smith a nickel CB. Maybe he'll fare better there.
Believe me, I hope I'm wrong about this. But I had genuine concern about him last year, and he's proven me right so far this preseason. -
Listen CB's get burned in this league it happens to all of them especially second year guys.
I expect the pressure to pick up once we game plan for the Bills and Smith will do fine.
The constant whining about SS is getting old real fast.
I'm real sick of it. Let the kid develop. Will Allen is everybody's crutch. -
With the gauntlet we have to go through, if we lose to the Bills, we could potentially start the season 0-4 with more tough games ahead.
With the way we looked at the end of last season and the way this training camp and preseason have gone, the concern is justified, ESPECIALLY with our first 8 game schedule -

That's it the season is off cause you bunch of crybabies can't take the heat!

Some of you guys need to calm down. This is a discussion forum. We discuss things. If you don't like the topic, don't post.
Right now the only thing to discuss is preseason. We had a bad one IMO. So that's what most of the discussion is going to be about. It doesn't mean we're predicting the end of the world.gunn34 likes this. -

changes a bleak spectrum to cheer
not much in Buffalo to fear
just kick back, have another beer
game four will be the crucible -
It reminds me of the fans that used to have blind faith in Jay Fiedler, John Beck and Tedd Ginn. That's the sickening part. The constant defense of players who have provided 0 positive results.
And yeah, Will Allen gets burnt too, but on far less of an occasion. He's proven to be a very good CB in this league for a long time.gunn34 likes this. -
Really though, outside of the TD to Hurd I thought Smith had an OK preseason overall. Not fantastic, but far from terrible. Made some good solid tackles, had a pick, and had decent coverage for the most part.
We have no idea how Will Allen will be if he comes back from his knee issue, so suggesting that he replace Smith is a bit premature.NolePhin and Killerphins like this. -
Second of all, I was concerned about Smith from the middle to end of last season. I would've made a move in the offseason to bring in a serviceable player in case Smith continues to show he may not be capable of starting.
EDIT: Since we didn't bring in a player, you then asked me who I thought should replace him. I said Will Allen when he's healthy. Apparently you didn't like that seemingly acceptable answer and continued to go haywire in responding to me.
Sorry if you disagree with me man. I hope Smith picks it up, I really do. I hope I'm wrong. Trust me! Wouldn't be the first time
