Ross really has no clue, imo. Let's suppose he's serious. This is inconsistent management. He gave Joe Philbin a 4th season (though he was fired 4 games into it; had Miami gone 2-2, there's a chance he'd have held on a bit longer - but he had lost the team and simply was never even close to being a decent HC).
Ross is so inconsistent he just doesn't realize you can't just make a statement like that; it leads often to bad organizational decisions. And, building a team and structuring a team to win long-term is different from trying to get "wins" and/or "make the playoffs" over the next few years.
Ross thinks this way: "Just get the right coach in place and we'll win." He's thinking, "If I can get the right guy to manage this division, the division of the business will turn around and we'll be a successful business in the next year or two." But, that doesn't really work exactly in the NFL. You need an organization that evaluates talent and that develops a long-term identity (the way the Steelers; Packers; Patriots; have done).
Ross keeps expecting to win in a year or two with each regime change and doesn't get the idea that he needs to build a strong FO all the way down and let it run. I hope this present group of President-GM-Scouting Staff-HC will become that. Just don't think he is a very good long term owner. -
Why? Just why? Yes, it's probably true, but there is absolutely no reason to even discuss firing the coach he just hired. No one has a crystal ball, RT could be lighting it up in the preseason and blow out his ACL on the first play of the season, and we could go 3-13 with some scrub QB. Does that count as a year? I don't know, but I can assure you one thing, the media will love to talk about it. After his second year, the media will immediately put him on the hot seat. Remember the year Jeff Ireland broke the bank because he knew that it was his last chance. We are still feeling the cap hits from his spending spree. The front office (likely tied to Gase) will be reckless with cap money if they fear that there may not be a tomorrow.
The thing is, it is fine to have these expectations. It is even fine to voice them internally (if you keep an eye on the checkbook), but nothing good will come from voicing them to the media. Imagine if Gase shows growth and produces a 9-7 team that misses the playoffs, but there is a witch hunt amongst the fans based on a soundbite from the owner, it would be one of the most "Dolphin things" to have happened since Ross bought the team. -
Ross is such a buffoon. While in reality this may be true hes already put his coach on the hotseat. Setup the media to start questioning everything. Hey coach you owners says you got three years.. etc this does nothign good for the organization. I say the fans tell ol ROSS you got three years to build a winner or you need to sell the team!!

Yup. This is on par with saying he wants a "young Don Shula" but hires a 50 yr old 1st time HC.

Heck, Coughlin won two superbowls in New York and he pushed out. -
FinD, it's a stupid thing to say. Just because he was stupid and said the wrong things in the past, doesn't make it smart when he says something to the opposite of it now.

Just to clarify, not saying that FinD's post was a stupid thing to say, was saying that Ross was stood for saying itMcduffie81 and dgfred like this. -

I think its reality...not sure why anyone would have an issue with it. Hes just stating...playoffs are your benchmark, three years is your timeline. I mean if we miss the playoffs for three more years, does anyone still want Gase as our HC?
I dont think Gase will have any issue with what Ross said at all...Im sure he expects to make the playoffs. -

My view for the past three years is that Ross is the real problem with this team . He is simply clueless as an NFL owner. Nothing he has done since the end of this season has changed my mind about him.
I hope Gase turns out to be a quality HC, but I have zero faith in Tannebaum as the head of football operations. So it will not surprise me in the least if the Dolphins are looking for a new HC after the 2018 season.Finster and Shane Falco like this. -
Just because you have the money doesn't mean you know how best to use it.

Love it.
This franchise needs some honesty, transparency and accountability.
To me, this sends a strong message to everyone involved, 'Here is the standard that's expected. You have X amount of time. Go do it.'dolphin25 likes this. -
I think the comment Ross made was more to appease the fans than it was to send a message to Gase or anyone in the organization.
Basically what he stated was, "I'll accept two more seasons of losing football, but you better win in year three or your gone". I just wonder how the season ticket holders are going to feel about watching two more years of mediocre to bad football, while hoping they finally get it together in three years.dgfred likes this. -
are we being primed because the team is literally going to be dismantled over the next 2 years? Mainly because of the cap issues.resnor likes this. -
He's starting to make better decisions, but he's still just a dumb fan. -
Wait...what?

This is insane.
If Gase doesn't get us to the playoffs in 3 years the fans will screaming and crying and picketing for his head anyway. Hell, if we don't make it in 2 years it will already begin.
Where the hell have you people been the last decade?
