He's on the ground a lot so he's not dominant. He doesn't fit our biggest need so he certainly wasn't perfect. It was a bad trade and a bad pick.

He's going to play DE but now I believe Randy Starks is now a NT. I think we decided to deal with that position in the family.

I'm happy with it. I think our run-D will be better and Mike Nolan will have a plan for him in our Nickel and Dime formations.

Im completetly fine going BPA in that spot, and love that we traded down and recouped half of the Marshall compensation. I'm gonna trust the FO on this one, these guys know what theyre doing.

Just going to throw this out there as it's been discussed partially the last couple of years ... Maybe they look to have Merling lose some weight and play more of a SOLB (ala the surprisingly departed Roth). After Merling was drafted, he was asked to gain some weight to play DE. Maybe they ask him to get back to where he was or slightly lower and move him.

We made our D line better with this pick and regardless of what the fans think our biggest needs are, the front office spends hours upon hours upon hours analyzing these players and figuring out what's best for our team. Have some faith, at least they didn't trade up and take Jacoby Ford or some random *** pick like that. I think this was a great move and I'm not the only one.

I realize that these are just fan opinions here but some good points are made and I thought I'd share.calphin, eric, WharfRat and 1 other person like this. -
Odrick was a great pick still being on the board at 28. He was big ten defensive player of the year that itself says something.

I think we wanted Dan Williams and thought he would be there. after that they tried to find a guy who was like him and blew the pick
i feel like they just turned in the card
Odrick won't be special he will just be another one of those mediocre guys -

Parcells / Ireland know what they're doing, and I'm very satisfied. We recouped a 2nd round pick by trading down, and also landed a very promising defender at #28 in the process. We need defense, and Odrick has the size, strength, and motor to become a very solid player for us...

Ok, here's the other side of that:
Yes, he's on the ground a little too much for my liking, but he can be taught to avoid that with hand and feet placement.
Second, he doesn't fit our biggest need, but this regime doesn't draft in the first on need. Why take a lesser OLB (Hughes or Kindle for example) and not take a better DE, who is versatile enough to play inside a lot like Randy Starks, arguable our best DL ?? This regime drafted very true to it's mantra. Core positions first, but BPA.
Third, it was a good trade because even as our 3rd ILB, Dobbins is better than Ayodele ever was, and he plays excellent STs, another mantra of this regime...(i.e. if a player can't start, he needs to play STs, Ayodele couldn't).
I have to disagree, although I would have loved to have seen Hughes (even tho he was a better option at WOLB, which we have less of a need) or Kindle, who at #28 would have been right where his value was figured at, and of course we don't know if the rumors of the micro-fracture surgery are true either, which would put him down in the mid 2nd range. But Ireland did what he has done in the past. I think the Dobbins pickup is a much better part of this trade than most seem to think. The kid can play...
EDIT: Oh yeah, I forgot the most important thing, they recouped that missing 2nd round pick in a very deep draft. If you think of it, lets suppose they draft Kindle (OLB), Morgan Burnett (FS) or Jason Worilds (OLB) then what do you think of what they've done in this offseason...arguably the best D player in FA and the best O player in FA, and filling at least one of the major needs in the draft...
No, this was a very good deal for us if you consider all the moves they've made.CashInFist, calphin, eric and 4 others like this. -
Also IMO Odrick is being brought in as a NT first and as a DE second.Skeet84, unluckyluciano, TotoreMexico and 3 others like this. -

The entire draft is based on "what if" speculation. So if we stayed at 12, who would the pick have been?
Derrick Morgan - What if he didn't make the conversion?
Brandon Graham - What if he isn't a LB?
Jerry Hughes - What if...
Earl Thomas - What if...

BPA doesn't mean you ignore needs. Period. Sometimes NBPA is a much better pick.
I'm not saying Odrick wasn't leaps and bounds better than everyone else still on Miami's board. But I'm just wondering why all the hacks yesterday, nobody asked Ireland about needs. It's like none of them even follow the team. -
