Nobody loves to reward failure like Stephen Ross...first Sparano, then Ireland, and now Joe. Hopefully Philbin's ultimate fate mirrors those first two after their extensions.
what a joke.

I think Philbin has learned from his two years of head coaching experience. He needs to improve on defensive and ST coaching, because his offensive play designs are good but are often poorly executed.

When will this nightmare end?

Hopefully about 350 days from now

When you have the chance to lock up a sub .500 coach, by God you gotta do it

Well, IF Coyle is going to fired, it might make it a bit easier to get someone else in here. No coach would come here with Philbin a lame duck...
But the bottom line is that Ross, once again, seems to be making decisions about keeping folks that the evidence clearly indicates they should not be here...ASOT likes this. -

I don't think I've ever been less excited about the Miami Dolphins than I am right now.

There is a small part of me that would love to see some free agent Joe Philbin bidding war after he makes the playoffs or something.
It would be hilarious. He's flying all over the country, being wined and dined.JimToss, ASOT, DPlus47 and 1 other person like this. -

This doesn't mean anything. If we don't improve next season he'll be let go with or without the extension.

I'm not a big Philbin fan, but its not so bad.
If they win 6/7 games or less he'll be gone anyway. Its sort of a safe thing though, in case they do surpass our expectations and actually improve and make the playoffs. And if not, he'll take a hit but he's a billionaire anyway so it doesn't matter much to him. Doesn't change much.Rocky Raccoon likes this. -
I think Ross is probably getting some good advice from the people around him that Joe Philbin is doing about as well as can be expected with the talent this team has on it right now.

The contract extension of death. I think Ross is setting Philbin up to get fired next year. Almost every time a coach gets an extension after a disappointing year, they tend to get fired after. I guess we'll see.

Aargh Ross is a moron!!!
All the smart owners take advice from their whining fans!!! -
Ross replaced himself with Mike Tannenbaum who is (A) far superior in terms of his knowledge of running a football team and (B) more well-connected in coaching circles.
That's probably a good thing for the Dolphins.
Ross has now publicly supported Philbin and supposedly given the Dolphins organization what appears to be some continuity at the HC position for the foreseeable future.
If we assume that Philbin will end up determining his real future based upon the team's record next season anyway and that this move could only improve our chances of landing a quality DC, then it would appear to be another positive.
If you didn't like Ross and you didn't like Coyle, then this is probably good news to you.
If (like me) you thought the offense had made strides and was in danger of looking worthy of the Play-offs with the addition of 2 Guards and a WR, you are also probably alright with this.cuchulainn likes this. -

If you don't think coaching matters, or that Belichick or either Harbaugh couldn't have gotten better results than Philbin, you're not being honest with yourself.Ophinerated, ASOT and shula_guy like this.
