What's even worse is that other players THIS SEASON have had multiple concussions as well. I've yet to hear calls for anyone other than Tua to retire over concerns for their health.

Its ultimately up to Ross if he wants to continue having the concussion cloud over his franchise, if Tua gets another concussion as a dolphin next year, we already know whats coming.

should the dolphins continue having Tua on the team.. it will be irresponsible if they do not pursue a legitimate quarterback to compete. Whether thats Jimmy, Derek Carr, or a second/third round draft pick, we can not go into next season with skylar thompson as our backup.

 

We have a DE that retired from football because of concussions, now he is a very solid player for us.

 

I think what's scary is if Tua has an outlier, and stays mostly healthy a season and then they extend him based on a single season not his career of injuries and concussion history. Just going to hold the organization hostage between mediocrity and injury history ala Tannehill. My biggest nightmare. Another Tanny.

 

I'm pretty convinced Tua is another Tanny. Good enough to fool us into giving him a big extension, not good enough to ever get us over the hump and win a superbowl.

 

Tua and some of his biggest fans dont know it yet, but neither this team or any team in the NFL will ever lock him in as a franchise quarterback. Just look how pathetic he was against Green Bay

 

Teams often get fooled with outlier seasons, and do some dumb stuff in contracts.

It'll be interesting to see what they do with his 5th year option. I think it would be a massive mistake to guarantee that much money with his future in this league so unsure.

There is zero way with the team as tight as they are against the cap that they can afford to sign a QB that good this offseason. Best case, we wait out early free agency and sign someone like Mike White or Taylor Heinicke. Guys who have started in the league previously but won't be looked at as anyone's #1.

 

I think you do that regardless- every team needs two potential starters. Just look at San Fran; they're not a playoff team without a 3rd string rookie playing dominant football. They'll lose Jimmy G this offseason, but still...gotta have two competent quarterbacks (and sometimes 3) on the roster.

 

That's difficult to do even with cap space.

Good QBs get starting jobs unless they are drafted.

 

Solid? He's beginning to look like the reincarnation of Jason Taylor out there. He's going to be special imho.

 

I certainly wouldn't go that far. He looked better over the second half of the season, and hopefully he can take the next step under Fangio. But up to that point he looked more like a body builder running around than a football player.

The tackling on this team is so very bad. Phillips consistently over runs his target. This is a technique Fangio hopefully cleans up.

 

Agreed. I'm hopeful he will because Phillips finally seemed to get it at the end of the year. To me, properly tackling and angles clearly weren't a priority under Boyer and Flores. They only cared about the big plays, and so everything else was horribly sloppy.

I would go farther. Phillips looks like a much better player in his first two years than Jason Taylor. Taylor SUCKED against the run in his early career.

 

And should really have 16.5 with that absolutely horsecrap of a roughing the passer call this season.

 

Wanny gets a lot of justified flack, but when he took over as HC, Taylor really blossomed and exploded as a player.

For the first three Seasons JT was mostly a speed rusher. He couldn't play the run. He improved over time with hard work and dedication to the craft. Phillips is a much better overall player than JT was during his first two years.

 

People forget that JT struggled early in his career with sacks and run containment as well before it all started to click. He only had 16.5 sacks in his first 3 years and I remember people calling in a JAG. Phillips is getting a ton of pressure and his run defence is improving. I dunno, maybe it’s because he has the same physique and motor as JT but he reminds me an awful lot of him.

 

That is fair. JT struggled against the run for sure and only had a few sacks his 3rd year.

 

I was not a fan of Jason Taylor in his first three years. I didn't think he was very good.

 

I remember most fans thinking the same. It’s probably why I still think of that defence being Zach’s defence since he was so good from the moment he stepped on the field. I still think of ZT as the best player on that team yet JT was a first ballot HOF and ZT still isn’t in.

 

I was a big fan of him as a prospect. When we drafted him, it wasn't quite the jump for joy in the air reaction that I had when we took Zach, but it was very positive. So I was probably more forgiving than others in that respect.

Those were the last few years where I wasn't able to go to the bar on any Sunday off to watch the Fins too, so I only got to see five or six games a season before 2000.
