This is the first I'm hearing about this.
On the one hand it's encouraging about Cowher because I was sincerely worried he might not have learned his lesson. He is the guy that after all tried to get away with guys like Kordell Stewart, Neil O'Donnell and Tommy Maddox forever in Pittsburgh. He didn't actually get over the hump until he had Roethlisberger, but still.
On the other hand it REALLY ups the stakes on this new Suck for Luck thing...because it's not just Suck for Luck. It's Suck for Cowluck. To think, if we do something like beat the Chiefs in Kansas City...we could lose a shot at Bill Cowher (whether we truly wanted that shot or not), and Andrew Luck.

This is really interesting on a bunch of levels. It definitely assuages my fear that Cowher won't look for the best QB play possible. But how do we know he's as high on Luck as the rest of us, or that he'll consider starting Luck as a rookie to be the best QB situation he can step in to? I know he started Big Ben as a rookie but still.
I really want to know more about how he'd approach personnel, especially with this persistent Omar Khan rumor floating around. -
 When you pull back to get some perspective on our situation, the one thing that becomes apparent is that it sucks to be us, more than any other team, I think.
If we keep Sparano and keep losing, we risk alienating the players and fanbase to heretofore unheard-of levels, even for a team which has had Dave Wannstedt, Nick Saban, Cam Cameron and Tony Sparano at the helm the last 11 years.
If we fire Sparano and it rallies the team to some unlikely wins, we would only hurt ourselves since Henne is NOT a deep-playoff/Super-Bowl Quarterback and we'd be a bad team picking in the late 20s next draft.
If we fire Sparano and win a few games but not enough to make the playoffs, we screw ourselves by being a bad team picking around 15th next draft.
And if we lose and lose and lose, even that might not be enough in a world with someone as unscrupulous as Pete Carroll in it.
God damn it.muscle979, Pagan, SICK and 1 other person like this. -
He didn't start Big Ben. Charlie Batch was the starter but suffered an injury in the preseason. Big Ben was promoted to the number two spot, behind Tommy Maddox. Then in the first game of the season, Tommy Maddox suffered an injury in the 3rd quarter. Big Ben took over, and never looked back.
What if we don't land Cowher, but we draft say, Matt Barkley. Will he be good enough? -
It already feels like 2007 again and we're only 0-3 right now. Feels worse actually, because there is little hope and no direction right now. I just don't feel like we'll lose enough games to get Luck. They'll probably win 4 or 5 games...which wont get the #1 pick.
-
And Barkley is perfectly fine. May even be a better QB than Luck in the end. -
I've chosen to loo at this as....Wohoo, an interesting offseason is coming.

Yeah, anyone with the first pick in the draft next year will be able to get any available head coach it wants. Luck is a perceived Golden Ticket.
-
I think we end up with Barkley, Jones or Luck, he'll come. This team has talent, especially at the skills positions. It'll be more than enough for a QB to come in day one and start. -
If it is true what this article insinuates, that Cowher only wants to go to a team with a good QB situation, I wouldn't want the guy if that is his thought process..If your not willing to take the position and tasks that come along with it, and do what you have to do to win the championship, then your showing holes in your committment level to the process..
The question I have is, what openings might be available that cowher has interest in, or any openings for that matter, and do they really have to be geographically correct?, and if so, doesn't that narrow it done to us? lets see, east coast teams.
Jets..nope
He's mentioned the giants... probably not gonna be an opening.
Carolina...nope..
Atlanta..nope.
Washington..probably not
Those are the only teams on the east coast..
Well, Jacksonville might be in the hunt, and they have gabbert, and their closer to his home?
I just think its a red flag on his committment level if he really did say that no?..
He would be my first choice if this regime change happens so I hope he didn't say that.Coral Reefer, Bumrush and padre31 like this. -
Hmm...sounds to me like the coach understand you have to have good players to be successful. I'm shocked..shocked I tells ya.

Well, if there's any truth to this report, I'm not interested in a coach that needs to be handed an ideal situation to take on the challenge of coaching again.

Honestly, I'm not sure what the attraction to Cowher is. While he is a better coach than what we have had since Jimmy, Cowher is simply more of the same......i.e....play it close to the vest, run the ball, limit mistakes in the passing game, play defense, and win in the kicking game. Bill Cowher doesn't strike me as a guy who understands the direction the NFL is going in when it comes to offense, and as a result, defensing those offenses. Where is the adapability?
Plus, unlike Jon Gruden, I don't see Bill Cowher having yearly meetings with Chip Kelly, Urban Meyer, and Will Muschamp among others in an attempt to pick up new, good ideas from the college game. In fact, I highly doubt you would see much spread at all with Bill Cowher as the head coach.Soundwave, Pandarilla, Coral Reefer and 4 others like this. -
Frankly, I think a new regime will have its hands full immediately with trying to fill in all the starting spots Jeff Ireland's negligence has left open.Anonymous likes this. -

First of all, "Suck for Luck" is a really awful idea. "Can't miss" draft prospects frequently do, and I realize that the draft bobbleheads are expressing that they're really, really serious Luck is can't miss, but it frankly doesn't mean a whole lot in the context of history. The "best prospect since Peyton Manning" tag affixed to him should be note enough considering Ryan Leaf was 1B to that.
I don't know what job Cowher is expecting to get if it's true unless Kubiak is fired.Coral Reefer, Bumrush and HenneNator like this. -

I'd worry if Cowhers heart is truely in it or not. Its not a half *** possible job. I KNOW Gruden would be in it.
-
Is Cowher also only interested in joining a team with a HOF defensive coordinator?

I would rather have Gruden. He really believes in Henne.

Which is why he doesnt have a job right now, he's not a good talent evaluator and ran the Tampa Bay franchise into the ground with his personnel decisions...great coach though. -

It was well known in the Tampa area Gruden had personnel decisions. -
Personally, I would love to see Gruden brought in and for him to bring Ruston Webster in as the GM.vt_dolfan likes this. -

It just shows that Cowher gets it, and we should focus on what this implies.
Cowher knows that in order to have success, you need to have a stud QB. Cowher couldnt get over the top until he got Big Ben. The QB is more important than the GM or the coach. Just look at the Colts. With Peyton, they are a playoff team with a genius coach and GM. Without Peyton, they are a team picking in the top 5 of the draft.
I really dont care who the coach and the GM is as long as the realize first and foremost that they need to find a QB for this team. That is the number 1 priority. -
There is a reason why Gruden is out there trying to sell himself as an NFL HC.

Problem for Cowher is going to be teams with great QBs are going to make the playoffs or play well enough to not get their coach fired. If this is really what he wants, he must not want to coach very badly.

I brought this up on my radio show last week, what do you guys think about Tony Dungy ?

As good of a QB Prospect in past 15-20 years as anyone else, easily. Including Peyton Manning.......... some people had doubts he would continue to succeed after losing key staff members and some key players on the team, and yet Luck goes out and still does it. -
Bruce Allen actually had final say over the roster. But Gruden was heavily involved and won out plenty. It was a weird dynamic.
