With Cleveland's move back to a 3-4 defense, Sheard looks to be the odd man out as he's better suited at 4-3 DE. He's had 15.5 sacks through his first 2 years with 8.5 last year while also forcing an impressive 5 fumbles. He fits the right side rush role opposite Wake, grew up in South Fla, and has a cap hit of only 1.7M over the next 2 years, so from a financial standpoint he would help counter a couple of the hefty contracts we pushed forward.
Sheard would be well worth our second 2nd round pick.
However, if I were GM I'd work out a deal involving Misi and a 5th or later to save us the 2nd; that way Cleveland fills their glaring hole at OLB without the position looming over their draft, and Olivier Vernon could appropriately fill Misi's shoes, which would now be possible with another true DE on the roster opening up such a move. IMO this makes all the more sense with Misi set to be a FA in 2014 and likely not being a priority re-signing. This could also expand our draft possibilities by allowing us to pick up either a top talent at inside linebacker or an upgrade at hybrid linebacker should they slide to us in the first two rounds. It wouldn't be necessary but it would be an option, or at the least we could grab a guy like Chase Thomas in the mid-late rounds to backup Vernon.
This also provides greater flexibility with how we approach defensive tackle in the draft b/c Sheard would allow Odrick to spend more time inside and make a permanent mover there if needed, which is also financially friendly b/c his 2014 cap hit of 765k is significantly less than what it would cost us to pay Starks or Soliai next year, so that's a second way to balance out the contracts we pushed forward. Maybe we draft a defensive tackle in the 2nd or 3rd round and give him this year to acclimate so that next year we're financially not forced to re-siging Starks nor Soliai.
Either way, Sheard would be a nice get for us and makes a lot of sense. Would rather have him for 2 years on the cheap than spend for Abraham.

If we did that I would draft Jarvis Jones, and our defense would be sick. Would allow us to bring pressure from alot of different spots

I have no problem with Starks Solai with Odrick moving between de and dt. Would be perfect. No need to destroy high quality depth.ToddPhin likes this. -

Could see something potentially happening on draft day. Maybe a two player deal on our side - Soliai and Misi for Sheard and a pick, then draft Star? Maybe also look offensively, could Bess be a guy that potentially gets moved? Cleveland has young guys with hands issues, maybe they would value a vet with steady hands for a developing QB, be it Weeden or someone else.
Lots of different options. How does his size fit into the standard Coyle profile of bigger DEs? -

For all intents and purposes it's easier to think of us as running a mixed defense with a 4-3 on the left side with Wake lined up outside the right tackle as a traditional end and a 3-4 on the right with Odrick in more of a 34 end role and Misi as the hybrid linebacker paired with him. As we know, in a 3-4, the end isn't the pass rusher; the OLB is, so people need to change their mindset of what Odrick's role is and how we execute the right side. If we want an improved pass rush from the right side then it either needs to come from the hybrid linebacker or an addition like Sheard who can boost our nickel pass rush while rotating in with Wake to help keep him fresh.
Unless Kevin Coyle changes his defensive philosophy, one that's quite successful in the league right now, then fans need to get this notion out of their head that Miami needs to replace Odrick with a traditional 4-3 rush end b/c it's getting a little annoying with all due respect to everyone.Fin-Omenal likes this. -
I havent heard anything about Miami being interested in trading FOR a guy from Cleveland, rather vice versa.

Didn't think anyone would need to ***** over common knowledge that Cleveland is switching to a 3-4 and that Sheard is a 4-3 end who doesn't fit.MrClean likes this. -

Jarvis Jones will be a Brown.

Sheard doesn't have enough right side snaps I would be comfortable acquiring him to play the right side. He's got 35 snaps on that side in the last two years. Wake being a left side only guy means you have less flexibility in it.
I'd prefer John Abraham all things consideredsurferosa likes this. -
Very good and thought out idea,PS.
Good job. Hope they can come through with a deal like that.ToddPhin likes this. -
The people mentioning depth also seem to forget the addition of Vaughn

I don't understand why so many are quick to chastise Odrick, he has flexibility along the DL and is an outstanding run stuffer. Also has athleticism too drop back in a zone blitz etc.
He only costs 1.9M and who knows how much better of a DE he will be at 20lbs lighter.
None of us are thrilled our 1st round pick isn't playing like JPP, but that shouldn't cloud his value as a member of our defense.Canad-phin, Anonymous, Sceeto and 4 others like this. -
Sheard has performed in the NFL and is still very young. He would likely be better than some of the options in 2. Not opposed to such an idea.

Sheard was a beast in college, I remember he was a one man wrecking crew against the Canes his senior year when he won big east dpoy. honestly if he was coming out this year I think he'd be a late 1st rounder, that 2011 draft was pretty stacked. this would be a great pickup, I'd have no problem giving up a 2nd for him.

Davone Bess would be a nice trade piece for the Browns.

I'd send Davone Bess for Jabaal Sheard no questions asked.

Has anything good ever come out of a trade with the Cleveland Browns?

I like Jabaal Sheard but John Abraham is better than Sheard as we sit here today, and Sheard seems to be one of those guys who has resisted moving over from left to right side, much like Cam Wake. I would therefore pass.
But the rumor has it Sheard isn't the only one available. Supposedly Ahtyba Rubin is available in trade. That would have my interest. Good player. Both Miami's defensive tackles have contracts that expire after 2013, and there's no significant 3rd tackle behind them depending on what you feel about Kheeston Randall.
Rubin is still only 26 years old, will turn 27 in July.Anonymous likes this. -
