A few weeks after saying he didn't want to coach.
How does this affect their choice at #1?

Doug Collins? The guy whose teams seem to get better immediately after he's let go? Really?!?
This is an absolutely terrible move. The Bulls reacted poorly to Scott Skiles' authoritarian, in-your-face coaching style. The answer is not to bring in a guy who's even more of an authoritarian, in-your-face coach. Who's next after Collins gets canned, Bob Knight?
As for what this does to their pick at #1, I'm not sure it does anything. The front office will still make the call. I don't think Collins will have a ton of input there.alen1 likes this. -
Bad move. I prefer Collins in the broadcast booth and Avery Johnson in Chicago. Bulls really blew it. Didn't they fire Collins themselves a while ago? And that was with Jordan on the roster.
-
Wow, weird move. I am not going to jump to conclusions yet though...
IMO, Avery Johnson is a HORRIBLE coach and really glad they did not get him. Collins... Not so sure on. -

As a Wizards fan I have to laugh at this. The guy is horrible with a young team, he's like Skiles only worse. As a Wizards fan I applaud this move. Thanks Chicago.

I am not a fan of Collins by any means, but let me reiterate... Avery is NOT a good coach. Even during timeouts you could see the assistant coaches were always the ones drawing up the plays.

There's already a thread on the Bulls board:
"Who gets fired first: Paxson or Collins?" :lol:alen1 likes this. -

John Hollinger has his usual brilliant piece on why this is a bad fit.
It's a great read, but to boil it down for those who don't want to plow through it, he basically ays that Collins isn't a bad coach, and he's good at fixing a poor defense. The only problem is, the Bulls are already a good defensive team. So the biggest reason you'd want to hire Doug Collins is pretty much a moot point. Collins' major shortcomings as coach are his problems handling young players, of which the Bulls have many, and that his temperment is almost identical to Scott Skiles, the guy the Bulls tuned out after 3+ seasons of harping. Add in the fact that Collins' teams play at an absolutely turtle-like pace (despite the presence of athletic talent like MJ and Pippen, and later, a pre-injury Grant Hill), where the Bulls have a roster that's best suited for an up-tempo game, and you've got a really bad match, even if you think Collins is a good coach.alen1 likes this. -
Paxson planning to talk with other Bulls coaching candidates

That's just a great line. -
Doug Collins is a fantastic commentator. I rather him stay with Marv Albert.
-
Coincidence that both D'Antoni and Collins backed out after meeting with Jerry Reinsdorf?
I think not.alen1 likes this. -

As a Heat fan, I don't like any of the available names you're putting out there. They're all former point guards.

ESPN is reporting that Vinny Of The Black is the frontrunner for the Bulls job. He's been working in the Suns' front office the last few years. No link, I just saw it on Sportscenter.
