From PFT:
Matt Burke likely is down to his final two games as Miami’s defensive coordinator. With the Dolphins ranking 30th in yards, 27th in points and within 64 points and 491 yards of allowing the most points and yards in team history, Burke probably will play fall guy.
“I think it’s been different week to week, so I don’t want to say, ‘I’m doing my job and they’re screwing up.’ It’s all of this in this together,” Burke said, via Adam Beasley of the Miami Herald.
Burke, though, defended his schemes, saying nothing “we do is unsound.” “I challenge anyone to prove otherwise in that sense,” said Burke, who is in his second season in his current job.
While the Dolphins could set the records for most yards and most points allowed this season, they almost assuredly will break the mark for passing yards allowed. They are only 402 passing yards from setting that mark.
The previous records were set in different years, putting this defense in reach of becoming the worst in team history.
Burke was in no mood to discuss what went wrong or what he or the team could have done better.
“You guys are already wrapping up the season here,” Burke said. “Guys, I’m trying to win a ball game. I’m trying to figure out how we can stop the Jacksonville Jaguars this week. If you want to have a retrospective at the end of the season, maybe you and I can do that.”

It seems really likely that Burke is gone. The numbers for the defense this season have been some of the worst in team history.

This part here alone should get him fired. I'd even be okay if he claimed injuries have forced him to play coverage and schemes to compensate, but to claim his defensive plans are sound? Nope.
If it is the players making mistakes (the Lions game says 'Hello') then it goes back to coaching and discipline -which Burke seems to have failed to provide (which also goes back on Gase allowing that situation).resnor likes this. -
It's always the players' fault with both Gase and Burke. They're either too dumb or not talented enough to learn and run the awesome plays/schemes/gameplans that they come up with every week.
And then Gase and Burke either aren't smart enough to change things up and go with what the players actually are good at, or either they aren't smart enough to realize that there's a problem in the first place. Or else they just don't care, and would rather fail their way than succeed by other means, which is always possible.resnor, FinsPensFan and Bumrush like this. -

Off the top of my head, I remember McCain and X where injured and came back. There may be others...
Not defending Burke, but looking at this list, does he deserve the same benefit of the doubt Gase is getting regarding the injuries?Last edited: Dec 21, 2018 -
I would put a decent amount of blame on players as well but in this case, it has to fall on the coach.Surfs Up 99 likes this. -
So...if Burke does get the boot, does that mean the wide 9 is gone too?

Good and take Gase with you. Can we hope for Harbaugh and Taub in the offseason? Please??

It's a good question. Personally I have no opinion. I'm fine if he's fired or retained. Theres nothing really special about him as DC. I think he will be let go because of two reasons. The mob wants blood so I can see Burke being made the sacrifice. Also Gase didn't want Burke. He wanted an experienced defensive coordinator. It was Ross wanting to save money that the choice had to be an internal hire. I think Gase will see his opportunity now to get his experienced defensive coordinatorSurfs Up 99 likes this. -

He should have not been allowed on the plane after the Texans game ...
That said, if there is a larger overhaul than just Burke (Gase and/or front office and TBaum) who the hell knows.resnor likes this. -

No love for Burke he hasnt proven he could do anyhting better than Vance and he sucked. Gase needs to hire a true defensive minded guru regardless of what I perserve as "Scaredness" to hire someone with more experience than GASE due to his fear of losing control. He likes yes men and proven coordinator would stand up to him.
If gase want's to keep his job he better get a good one! -

I'm 100% fine with Gase coming back with a new DC....Burke has been awful.
There were a couple times against NE where we just had no-one around Gronk near the sticks whether they converted or not.
There is a lot of talent in the secondary when healthy but we can't even find a way to create pressure to help them.resnor likes this. -
He’s had dog crap talent to work with in the front 7. Aged out former stars in Wake and Quinn, busted pick in Harris, backups at tackle and three lbs that are all complementary pieces, not difference makers. And an offense that can’t pick up third downs. If he was an elite coach, he could have gotten more from less. He’s not.

I'm ambivalent about Burke. He's not my type of defensive coordinator in that he's not aggressive enough with pressures and blitzes. I want an attack defense. But when you look at whats out there, there are a lot of bad, bad DCs. Some alot worse then Burke. So unless I know who you are replacing Burke with I'm ok with him staying. Just get him some DTs, a CB and another DE. If you do replace him make sure the guy is better and dont just replace him to replace himKeyFin likes this. -

Tannehill out for several games. Parker's injury, well...not really sure how to count him.
How about this list? Are these injuries enough to give Gase a pass? Are we underachieving or overachieving right now?KeyFin likes this. -

I think Gase was well aware that in order for his offensive scheme to be successful he needed a dominating defense like they had in Denver. Vance Joseph and Matt Burke wasn’t going to provide that.
If Burke is indeed gone at the end of this season, I pray we throw everything we have at getting Wade Phillips. As a HC he wasn’t very successful but as a DC there’s no doubt of his defensive successadamprez2003 likes this. -

We haven't suffered insurmountable injuries on that side of the ball. Burke has been flat out awful more games than he's even been average.
It's painful to see literally 0 pass rush week to week. It's a lot easier to create defensive pressure through scheme than anything else and yet we see none fairly consistently.
It's painful to see players uncovered near the sticks or a penalty on the defense every 3rd and long. It's like we aren't even accounting for all the offensive players.
Anyway when you aren't rushing the passer or stopping the run you're basically getting by on the talent of your secondary. Burke is lucky we have at least 3 damn good to great players back there. -

Just because some on here WANT Gase to be on the hot seat, do we have any evidence that he actually IS on the hot seat?
