Huge break for the Dolphins (and others).
Peace be upon you, Taylor Swift

This makes it easier to keep our core together. But it makes it much more difficult to add pieces via free agency.

I will be interested to see if maybe this gets teams to be more open to trading though. Maybe some pricey non-free agents get dealt.

I need some clarity on how we are getting $80 million in cap space. I know what 5RS says, but it's not so clear right now.
Hey, if the Saints can do it every year then so can we...I don't see it.
https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/tools/roster/miami-dolphins/ -
Restructuring Chubb, Tyreek, and Ramsey could save ~$50m. Extending Tua could save ~$18m. Cutting Ogbah, X, and Baker could save ~$23m. That alone, without the cap increase, puts the Dolphins around $40m in the black. The cap increase is $30m. That’s around $70m in the black. There are many other options to get even more cap space.
This has been explained here multiple times and it’s all over the internet with a simple Google search. -
This is not including that the roster went down to 42 as opposed to 53...let's say 48 because the 6 draft picks ($7.2 million - $27 million) should be factored into that.
My math must be off. Can you show me what you are talking about? I don't want to do a Google search. I'd like to you take the Spotrac app and walk me through it like I was 5.Last edited: Feb 25, 2024dolphin25 likes this. -
I’ll do you a little solid and explain a few things for you. That nearly $80m is before any resigning of current players (Like Wilkins and AVG, for example) or signing rookies. However, $80m will be enough to do that if the Dolphins want to pay guys like Wilkins and AVG.
And, either your math is off or you don’t know how to restructure an NFL contract. It also seems you’re not factoring in the fact that the cap went up $30m.
Not to mention there’s an extra $75m that can go towards performance based pay. -
-
How long is the contract for?
How much total is it for?
How much of it is guaranteed?
How much of it is a signing bonus?
How much is paid each year?
Are there any incentives?
And these are just variables that immediately come to mind. I’m quite certain there are many others.
We’ve released Ogbah and Howard will be a post June 1st cut. In total between the 2 of them, that’s a $30 million savings instantly.
Expect Baker to get cut. $13 million
Expect Mike White to get cut. $3 1/2 million
Expect Chubb and Ramsey’s contracts to be restructured.
Expect Tua to be signed to a long term deal.
There’s many ways to manipulate the cap to free up money to keep and sign players we want. The sky is far from falling.danmarino likes this. -
Something something cap isn't real. Can manipulate everything. Yadda yadda.

Trolls will try to post only negative “sources” in order to rile people up. For every “source” that says Wilkins is a goner there is one saying he’s going to be a Dolphins next year. So why only post the negatives?
“Even though the Dolphins are still an estimated $28.5 million over the 2024 salary cap, Grier said the team has the necessary resources to either sign Wilkins to a long-term deal (at perhaps $20+ million per year) or use the franchise tag on him ($22.1 million in 2024 base salary).
Wilkins has repeatedly said that he wants to remain a Dolphin, and it was telling that he participated in last week’s cycling challenge for cancer research even though his contract was set to expire.
“We had had conversations, and we were close on a deal last offseason, and it didn’t come together,” Grier said.”

You just did the equivalent of posting a week old article about how the Titanic is a strong ship the day after it sunk.
Here's is Beasley's current article:
"ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler and Dan Graziano reported the following Sunday:
“Several league sources expect #Dolphins’ Christian Wilkins to avoid franchise tag. Miami source says keeping options open, but teams bracing for star DT to hit free agency. ”
They also suggested that the Houston Texans and Cleveland Browns would be among the teams in the mix for Wilkins’ services if he avoids the tag and is allowed to hit the market.
The Dolphins have until Tuesday to decide whether they want to tag Wilkins. After that, they have his exclusive negotiating rights for another five days before the legal tampering window opens.
If not tagged or re-signed, Wilkins would be free to sign with whomever he wants at 4 p.m. on March 13, when the league year turns over. Spotrac estimates his market value for a long-term deal is $20.2 million annually."

This isn't fantasy football. Your take on the cap is cute, but bad cap situations result in loss of talent and difficult decisions in the real world. Looks like Wilkins might be a casualty because there's absolutely zero good football reason not to at least franchise or transition tag him. -
Wilkins is going to garner a big payday. There’s no doubt about that. He’s a beast on the DL and has proven he’s one of the best in the league.
I like so many others hope the Dolphins retain him. We CAN do it. It is financially and reasonably possible. Although the Dolphins are in the 2nd worst cap situation, we’re also in the best situation when it comes to contract restructuring. Some of this is going to come down to Wilkins’ teammates as well as Christian himself.
If we do lose Wilkins however, I certainly hope Grier is able to make a worthwhile trade out of it. I can truly see Wilkins being worth a 1st and at least a 3rd round pick if we decide to tag and trade him. -

If he leaves we won’t have “only” Sieler for very long. -
To franchise tag him, you need to cut 31m+ to get under the cap and then need to cut another 22m to fit his franchise tag number, AND that all needs to be done by March 13th. So their cap situation has handcuffed their decision making.
Of course they can retain him. I imagine they'll get a shot at him once he goes into the market. However, I don't see the Dolphins swimming in those waters with so many other holes. It's a real possibility he walks and we don't get proper compensation because of where our salary cap is. -
That article also says " Miami is keeping all options open" in regards to Wilkins. So yes, they can still sign him and have the ability to. But, if he wants to try to reset the market elsewhere than Miami should let him.
They will get a compensation draft pick for him next year if he goes. -

Every move is going to come with a risk. I love Wilkins, but setting a new bar for a DT contract may just be more than the Dolphins are willing to pay. -
When the Dolphins end up between $50m-$80m under the cap will you eat your crow or just disappear for a few weeks/months per your MO? -
The cap plays very little in this situation with Wilkins. -
-
Also, the guy on reddit who is big on the cap put up a new post and highlights how the Dolphins could easily afford Wilkins if they want to. If they let him walk it's because they don't want to pay that kind of money for him, not because they can't pay it.
Personally I wouldn't be surprised if they moved on from him and went after someone like DJ Reader or even DaQuan Jones instead as Baltimore defences usually have a big NT like person on the line and neither Sieler or Wilkins are that.danmarino likes this. -
