We all know about the dropped INTs thing. We also know that even if more INTs were dropped, Henne did not pass the eyeball test this year.

 

Looking forward to seeing Henne without those two idiots who coached him last season. Not hard to see that he was put in every bad situation possible.

Is this what it's come down to? I mean, I think Henne deserves another shot, but I can't believe this many fans are clinging to this notion that Henne is just unlucky and that's the only reason for his poor play. These stats don't do anything to tell the whole story. Henne didn't make big plays down field. He checked down too often. He made very poor throws which does a lot to explain why so few of them were dropped. He had a bad year folks. No statistics can be warped to explain it away. Let's hope he can flourish under a new offensive coordinator, but let's not make excuses for this season.

Was he as good as I had hoped he would be...no. But he was far better IMO then alot of people on this site think he is....

I want Henne to succeed as much as everybody else. I hope he wins the starting job in 2011 and that he throws for 40 TDs. However, after watching him play for 2 years, I don't think that is gonna happen.

 

Henne definatley had issues with Zone coverage, but if you go back and take a look at some of the discussion that took place in Club...you'll also find that very few zone busting plays were even called by Henning last season....AND we were actually Ill prepared to defeat the Zone....based much more so on the lack of a running game, then Henne. If teams actually HAD to respect the play action pass....Henne's numbers would have been much different.

 

Well, more or less, but and it is a huge but, he did show when the offense was in non base formations he could play at a high level, and keep in mind in 09 we ran 2 Te's and had the talent to do so, in 10 they tried but the #2 Te did not catch a pass until Wk #16, so there are reasons why he regressed, add in the running game disappeared and Henne havign a bad yr is not a surprise.

Even still though..would like to see him earn the job, would also like to see Sparano open things up for him with more base 3 Wr looks and some better explosiveness out of the backfield on receptions.

 

Chad Henne is better than he showed last season, to be sure. But you can't use stats to make that point; stats for a QB are the most subjective measuring tool in football. A QB's stats depend on everyone around him; Henne had a poor OL, no running game and one good Receiver last season. Not to mention a HC and OC who acted as though they hated him and wanted him to fail.

You want to see how good Chad Henne can be, go back and watch his reel from '09, when he hadn't been ruined by Sparahen. USE YOUR EYES.

 

Right...use your eyes see what he does when we went to 3 WR sets.....what we did when we went hurry up.....watch him against the Jets in 2009....when he just for one game...had that **** eating grin of a gunslinger who could have his way with a defense. There were times THIS season...when he was able to throw the ball all over the field and move us like nobody's business. His confidence took a HUGE nose dive in the middle of the season....and there were multiple reasons why. Quite a few were his own issues...but quite a few were on Henning and Sparano as well.

Ill almost guarantee you though....

If our running game was where we thought it would be last season.....we wouldnt be talking about drafting a QB.

 

Asking any QB to succeed on this team this past year is asking one hell of a lot. Would Manning or Rodgers have done better? Most likely. However, Manning is arguably the GOAT and Rodgers may one day be the next Manning. Give Henne some help, better coaching, more experience and I believe we see a pretty good QB.

 

Not sure who you're referring to, or if you bothered to read the article. But its not an excuse making article at all. It's a fact based explanation for why there is a misconception about how well Henne did or did not play this year. Its an attempt to inject some objectivity into a discussion that has increasingly become subjective. No one is claiming that Henne played well. However, and I dont know how many times and different ways this has to be explained before it starts to sink in, Henne was given chickenshidt and told to make chicken salad out of it. He failed. Doesn't mean he's a bust, it means he's not good enough to overcome the deficiencies we had at all the other positions the way Philip Rivers, Peyton Manning and Tom Brady did this year. I'm with you, give the guy some tools to work with and lets see what he can do.

 

Would you even notice if Henne improved? Hint: He improved in 2010.

 

Please direct me to those discussions, because I recall debunking a lot of those arguments. Specifically after the CIN game, when people complained we didn't run x, y, or z concepts.

 

Yeah, in hindsight I absolutely think that Sparano and Henning preferred Chad Pennington and were constantly looking for a reason to bench him. I also think that Ireland and the bosses are Henne supporters who may have overruled Sparano's wishes. I hope that little squabble has been put to bed, b/c if it isn't we may be looking for a new HC, and a new QB this time next year.

 

We sucked vs Cover 2 all year long. We lacked the speed to get down the seam or over top of the safeties. We rarely sent enough receivers into the pattern to attack all three levels of the defense. Our Qb stunk at extending plays and allowing additional time for receivers to get open. We didnt threaten the flats to anchor the CBs and prevent our WRs from being doubled. Even vs zone, Marshall was being doubled or (CB-OLB-S) bracketed all year. We could've used Ronnie as a weapon out of the backfield to take advantage of this but we never did. By the end of the year, while still in Cover 2, teams were using their OLBs and/or CBs to double Bess and Marshall while daring Henne to throw to Mastrud, Wallace, Moore etc. It was a joke that we didnt have anyone to roast them out of those coverage looks. I'm not a big Hartline fan, but when he went down, our passing game was basically shot. And even before he went down, we needed a double move or a flea flicker to get behind anyone. Play action got us deep a few times, but with no running game, play action is a tough way to make a living. We just overall stunk. I'm actually encouraged by what Henne, Bess, Fasano & Marshall were able to do given that they were basically playing by themselves. If we add some better complimentary players, and a running game I think we can have a good offense.

 

Then again, Henne might NOT be better than we think.

 

Henne may very well be better than some people think but until now, he's been nothing but average. Yes, the team needs to upgrade some positions but If I'm Ireland, there is no way, I'm putting all my eggs in a Chad Henne basket. I'd do my best to get him some, at the very least, equal competition....

Yeah, don't get me wrong; I said it before that draft and I haven't changed my mind: Henne will never be better than, say, a Jake Plummer type QB. He won't put asses in seats, but with a good D and a decent supporting cast - and a HC and an OC who aren't actively out to destroy the young man - he would be just fine.

And the sad thing about all this is: we may never know how good he could have been. Sparano and Henning and Lee may just have ruined the kid by absolutely ****ing him over in his crucial first three years of development.

So, yeah - we need a plan B going into next season.

I personally want some competition that has a GREAT chance to beat Henne out. It's a win win...

Completely agree that he may be ruined but the only reason I always say don't get rid of him is because he seems unphased by many things. The Int's, the big hits and so on. That's the one thing Henne has that all the great Qb's have. Short term memory.

yes, I do all the time. I also do a good job of it without trying to insult the poster or making a passive aggressive statement on how much more I know about them.

 

Watching him play was the only proof I need. Could he improve somewhat in a better situation, probably, but IMO he as at best an average NFL QB and that won't win much.

Out of the 14 teams that had a winning record this past season....1 Had under an 82 QB rating. It is very very very important in this league to pass well from 11-20 yards.

Im sure there will be a million excuses for his lack of success in the 11-20 range. which begs the question as to why I even posted this. Eh, maybe someone will get something out of it...

You put Henne in a situation where he can open it up and play his game like in hurry up or multiple WR sets you would be amazed at the improvement you will see. Unfortunately your untrained eye is not keen enough to realize that Henning had no clue how to use his young QB and when he did he put the brakes on it to play for field goals.
Let's just hope he isn't ruined beyond repair as they absolutely destroyed his confidence. Sparano now knows he was the enabler to that mockery of a sham of a travesty that was the offense last season. The culprits are gone. Time to right this big mess and no better place to start than to give Henne the keys. If he is a failure which I doubt will happen with some real support then move on. If he succeeds then we are good as gold.
