Can't say I'm surprised.
Chad Pennington will be starting under center when the Dolphins open the regular season. -
Off to bed now -
Beck or Mcown IMO.
-
He's a replacement for McCown, IMO. A known quantity who's not going to set the world on fire. Plan B in case neither Beck nor Henne are ready this season.

And claiming inability to speak your mind because of some imaginary brigade of brownshirts for Beck is silly.

I'm not so sure. If they bring in Pennington, I'm pretty sure he'll be under center on opening day. They obviously want Beck to win this thing, and they aren't going to cut McCown (taking a rather large cap hit) and sign Pennington (to a rather large contract) to be his backup. If they sign him at all, it's going to be as the starter, simply because he's better than McCown. That could mean that Beck's the odd man out. I'd hate to see that but if the new regime decides that he isn't the guy, it makes the most sense. He's a lot cheaper than McCown and he might actually have some trade value left. I also look for Beck to be the starter on opening day but if they sign Chad, I'm pretty sure his days in Miami are numbered. -
If we bring Pennington in, I would expect Beck still has a good chance to start opening day.
Why wouldn't he? His done the work and knows the offense, if Beck struggle badly though, we will see Pennington who may be more like expensive and better insurance then McCown. -
We could just end up keeping 4 QB's.
It doesn't happen often but it has in the past,,,,,, the Pats did it the same year they won the SB,,,,,,,,,it may have been the year before, but my point is it could happen.
Odds are it would be Beck cuzz he's the only one they didn't bring to Miami, but it's to soon to cut him. IMHOLab3003 likes this. -
i agree, mccown is the odd man out. cant give up on lil john beck yet
-
this Regime is not giving up on Beck after 5 nfl games, be serious we're dealing with Bill Parcells, not an idiot...

In my opinion, if we sign Pennington, I cant see it being anyone other than McCown being the odd man out. Henne isnt going anywhere, I can't see why we would release Beck at this point. He's had some bad days in TC, but he's had some ok ones too. I think the key to Beck's future with this team lies in the 4 upcoming preseason games and his performances there.
Pennington is going to be an upgrade to McCown I think, the only problem i see with that is Pennington is probably going to want to go somewhere that he's going to start. -
Early on I thought; Yes they will get Pennington cause hes a Parcells guy. But after thinking this thru why would they go thru all the trouble? 1. If Bill is truly building a team he doesn't need a broken down QB to impede progress which Chad would do if he is brought in to start. I think we all agree that for this team to grow, as a team, they need to grow together. Bringing in Pennington doesn't do that even if he is better than who we have now. His limit is set as is Josh's but we have no real clue about John or Henne and we won't find out by playing Chad Pennington. Bill says he's on a 3 year plan; well it takes three years for the QB to "REALLY" get it and for the team to gel with him. So my second guess is that Bill passes on Chad the second time around.:wink2:

If we bring in CP, it means McCown goes away. CP will be brought in to start and Henne will be developed to back him up. The pressure on Beck is to prove that he can be a legitimate backup in this league. And I have confidence in him. I think he has the ability and the mindset to be a long term backup QB in this league.
-
The Dolphins have to justify to the older players like Holliday & Ferguson they're doing roster moves to get the team into the playoffs. That's why they hired Parcells, to bring Miami back to the playoffs. They need a dependable QB & right now none of the QB's are dependable in game situations (note: AS OF RIGHT NOW!). Pennington at least they know has won some games at the NFL level isn't known for inconsistency like McCown is.
-
If Pennington signs with us, it will be because he thinks he has a chance to start. If he doesn't, I don't think he'll sign here.

I don't know...all they really lose is the signing bonus on McClown if they cut him (could be as much as $2.8M across two years)...While they lose less if Beck is cut, (something less than $1m..figures according to Clumpy's page) they also lose his ceiling. McCown has reached his ceiling. It would be and interesting decision nonetheless. And we do have the cap space to let him go...
I think this regime knows exactly what they are going to get from McCown and still don't know what Beck can do...Besides while all the reports indicate there isn't a winner in the QB race here, the same reports seem to indicate that perhaps McCown isn't the winner so far... That would be more telling to me than rather there is a clear cut winner...
I don't know...but lets face it if they sign Chad, he'll be inserted as the starter from day one.... -
For those saying that we would not cut McCown because of the cap hit, can we not eat most (or all of it this year) and be fine. I believe we were at the cap floor a couple of weeks ago, so it will not hurt us this year. Bring Pennington in, sign him for a one year contract. Tell him he will compete with Beck and Henne for the job, if he does not win it and does not play this year then he is no worse off because he won't get a better chance to start in the league.
As to who does get cut, I am concerned that it could be Beck as per the Sun Sentinal blog yesterday that said we may go with two QB's Saturday (the writer said he would expect it to be McCown and Henne). -

This is exactly why I think McCown will be the QB cut since he's proven he's nothing but backup material in the league... -
I agree. That's why I think that if they sign Pennington it could well be the end for Beck in Miami. Why would they eat McCown's cap hit and sign Pennington to an even larger contract when they believe in Beck and only need Chad as a backup? Doesn't make much sense to me. Doesn't make a whole lot of sense for Pennington either because there's some places that might look at him as a possible starter.
I don't see them giving up on Beck just yet so I don't see them signing Chad Pennington. But if they do I think it's a pretty clear indicator that they aren't sold on Beck as a starter for this season.
As for keeping 4 QBs like some have argued, I don't see it happening. They put a lot of emphasis on getting every QB his fair share of reps and that wouldn't be possible with 4 QBs around. I really don't see them cutting the reps of Beck or Henne and it doesn't make any sense to have both McCown and Pennington around when one of them isn't getting any reps. If Pennington comes, someone's going to go. -
No way we get rid of Henne IMO and i dont think we'd get rid of McCown either so unfortunatley i think Beck may be gone. I really do not want Pennington though either way.
-
It makes sense.
Chad is upset the Jets released him as he wanted to spend his entire career in a Jet uniform (he has said so) because he just loves the Jets fans and wanted to be one of the few players now a day to spend his entire career in one uniform. Unfortunately it didn't work out that way and I hear he isn't too happy. Would make all the sense in the world for him to reunite with Bill Parcells, the man who helped draft him, and to join a team who plays the Jets twice a year. This is like Favre wanting to go to the Vikings (obviously the players are a wee bit different :wink2: ) but Chad has the chance to do so since the Jets had to release him.
Best of luck to Chad in Miami, minus two games a year. He will improve your team.opfinistic likes this. -
You don't dump a highly drafted QB prospect entering his second year to keep 2 vet QB's on a rebuilding team looking for a future starter at the QB spot.
Come on people. -
Agreed, one man can provide veteran leadership for two developing youngsters. We have no idea at this if Beck or Henne are the real deal or not. I hope they both light it up and two years from now teams are knocking on our door wanting to trade for one.

If they bring in CP IMO they will be making a big mistake. You guys think Jay had a weak arm?? CP appears to be made of glass or tissue paper 1 full season out of 8. IDK I really just don't see him as an upgrade over anyone of our QBs. Maybe Josh but at least with him you know he can take a hit, and will give you some very good games. Beck has been getting better and better, and IMO appears to be getting over his early jitters. And you know Henne is not going a place, and even though I hated the pick I am starting to warm up to him some (not below zero anymore:wink2:). I just don't see how CP does anything for this team other then muddy the waters even further. But I am not the boss and I would guess this is why I am typing on a computer about it and not in Fla. making the call.

Notwitstanding the difference between having to trade for Farve or signing Pennington.
If Jeff and Bill didn't go after Farve why would they want a much less talented veteran.
The same reasons why it would make no sence to sign Farve applies to pennington 10 fold. Besides it's not like he is that much of an upgrade over McCown. This is a red herring. We will not sign Pennington. -
I dont think we cut Beck, even if he is the odd-man out. There are plenty of teams that would give up a draft pick for Beck. I would guess the 49ers and/or Rams would be very interested.
-
Beck is the QB doing the best in training camp?
I thought he was the 3rd best of 3 based on everything I've read so far.
I think if Pennington comes he replaces Beck probably. Beck is the only guy that Parcells and company never signed. The brought in McCown so they must see something in him. They drafted Henne and Pennington so we know how they feel about those two guys.
If Beck has any trade value then you know that is something that they must be very aware of. I think they want a developmental QB, a starter and a back-up type guy. Henne is the future, Pennington would probably be the starter and McCown would be the back-up. Any snaps that Beck gets in practice are just snaps that Henne or the starter are missing at this point. -
-
pennington has a familiarity with parcells & henning, but its still a different playbook.
My prediction stands that Beck will start the regular season. If Pennington comes into play, it won't be week 1
Oh, and to everyone that thinks Beck is out, i call incorrect! I highly doubt parcells & co will approach this year with Henne, McCown, and Pennington as our starting QBs. they'd most likely keep it one vet, and two developmental guys. -
I hear Martz was throwing a hissy fit because they went after Stanton, who Martz did not want. Funny thing is, him and Cameron are from the same coaching tree I believe, and their QB order was the same. Beck, then Edwards, then Stanton.
-
similar systems can still have different playbooks. there is still timing with receivers. player rapport. learning your o-line and running backs.... Never said chad's transition here would be harder than favre, don't know where you got that idea. just saying his transition here will probably require more than 2 weeks to "grasp" completely.
that said, i don't necessarily want pennington to start. i want him here as a vet mentor to the young guys.
